The area in Southwest China that was hard-hit by the earthquake a year ago is slowly escaping the shadow of the tragedy. However, the recovery doesn't necessarily mean a return to "normalcy".

"Earthquake tourism" is leading the way for the region's economic recovery. A combat simulation inspired by the Counter-Strike computer game has taken over the devastated region as a new form of entertainment for city folks blowing off steam from stresses at work.

Read about this strange story on how simulated death is disturbingly occurring at a location where a large number of the dead still lay buried in the rubbles.

Now it really looks like that the swine flu isn't going to be any different from the regular flu.

It's not as virulent as the strain that triggered the pandemic of 1918.

With this new information, there really isn't any reason for alarm then.

When we first met, we had sex several times a day, but it's like we used up our quota.

Of course, marriage is so much more than sex.

So how do the humans escaped that pandemic back in 1918 ?
The virus mutated on its own, and spared the human race.

Approximately 1% of the world's population at the time died from the pandemic flu.

But I would agree that it's not time to panic. Actually, it's never a good time to panic.

We're not at the stage of a lockdown. Just be wary about hanging around really sick people and wash your hands frequently is enough at this time.

This is the statement from the CDC.

There are other strains of the H1N1 viruses that cause milder illness, but many scientists suspect that it was the very same strain that was responsible for the pandemic of 1918 that mutated into a swine flu that is mutating back to affect humans today.

This isn't the same strain of flu that killed 40 million people.
That's incorrect.

The swine flu is the same flu strain that caused the pandemic of 1918. It's the influenza A, subtype H1N1.

We do have oseltamivir currently. It is an anti-viral medication that can attenuate the symptoms of the flu. Whether it can save people from dying is unproven.

Medical science has become far more advanced than at the beginning of the century, but we still don't have effective treatment against the flu.

Here's a news clip about the flu pandemic of 1918.

I thought it's ironic that nursery rhymes tend to focus on death and suffering. The "Ring Around the Rosie" was about the Bubonic Plague, and here's a song that's dedicated to the pandemic flu:

I had a little bird,
Its name was Enza.
I opened the window,
And in-flu-enza.

Holy shit! 1.86 cm.

My little pinkie finger is taller than you.

I tell patients to look for three things--high fever (higher than 39 C or 102 F), severe cough or difficulty breathing, and extreme lethargy.

If you have those symptoms and have had direct contact with another person who has been confirmed by a certified laboratory to have the swine flu, you should get tested yourself.

But otherwise, you shouldn't worry.

The swine flu isn't just a new strain of the flu. Since no living person has any immunity against this strain, it is a lot more deadly for otherwise healthy young people.

The typical new strain of the flu that comes around every winter usually doesn't pose a threat to healthy people, but only to really old folks and babies.

That's the main distinction.

Most of the victims in Mexico were healthy young adults.

I am not saying it's time to panic, but the vast majority of people who died during the flu pandemic in 1918 were healthy young adults.

I found out that the wireless connection causes the latency to fluctuate wildly.

One second, the ping was 16, and the next, it was 491.

That was the issue with the jerkiness.

Once the latency stabilizes, I was able to play--with myself.

I made the connection, but the problem is that it's extremely laggy and jerky. Sometimes when I try to move, I won't be able to move at all. Note that this is only a problem on the computer that is connecting to the server, and not on the computer that's hosting the server.

I searched the Steam forum and also Googled, but I couldn't find a way to solve this problem.

Can you help me please?

Caboose is correct.

When the new strain of flu virus mutates so it's communicable between people, shit hits the fan.

That's what's going on now.

Of course, a pandemic might not materialize despite this new strain, but it has the potential of doing so.

The last flu pandemic occurred in 1918, and 40 million people died from that.

Things are not bad now, but I could get a lot worse.

I pray for all of us that the pandemic can be avoided.

The BSOD is the most non-specific symptom of a PC problem. It doesn't really tell you much.

Did the problem start from the very beginning, or only after you made some software/driver changes?

I agree with the memtest. It's a good place to start.

And the mobo battery is a very good thought too. It would go with the date/time issue. Make sure the battery is securely installed (not loose).

What do you think of this article?

I think it's an over-simplification when an addiction is defined primarily by the number of hours devoted to an activity.

Addiction is a problem, and it should be defined as such only if an activity starts to cause problems in other areas of one's life.

When I interview kids (my patients) for the amount of time they play games, I also ask about their school, social life, and other activities.

I have some patients who spend 10-12 hours a day playing games, and that's excessive by most people's standard.

But that article claims that three hours a day is excessive?

It should be perfectly clear to everyone that everything we know about faith and religion is made up by human.

are you by any chance fan of Louis Armstrong, Satchmo?
I am too lazy to search through TWHL, but there was a whole thread on this topic. And yes, I picked my alias from Armstrong's official nickname. I picked "satchmo" (by the way, I intentionally did not capitalize satchmo to distinguish it from the real "Satchmo") because I wanted to retain some anonyminity in various forums at first. If you Google "satchmo", all you're going to get is a bunch of Louis Armstrong stuff.

By now, of course, I am fairly well-known to everyone, because of my professional record and my two books.

Did you know that TWHL was the very first online forums that I joined? It still is the best place to visit. The members really keep it alive and well.

That's why there are so many medical drama shows on television.

I live the drama at work everyday.

What I didn't mention so far is that at the same time this was going on, the next bed was a 16-year-old girl who just got diagnosed with diabetes.

She and her mother were both crying because it's such a devastating news.

I spent two hours counseling the diabetic girl and her family in the emergency room.

It makes me wonder why the mother brought the kid in, in the first place.
I asked the mother this very same question. Why come to the doctors when her son is in the very capable hand of God?

She said it's because her son's pain was so severe that he thought he was going to die, and her son asked her to bring him to the doctor's.

The son begged me to operate on him. He wants the surgery. Unfortunately, he's only ten, and this crazy society rather put the rights to consent to medical treatment in a crazy person than a rational ten-year-old.

At the end, this has nothing to do with religion or faith. The mother is just a nut case. And nut cases throughout history used religion as justification for their crazy behavior.

I was called to the emergency room last night to see a ten-year-old boy who has appendicitis.

The mother refuses to consent him to have surgery. She told me that they're going to go home and pray, and God is going to make her son better.

She said she believes in miracles, not science.

I told her that God had sent me and the best surgeon to help her son, and refusing surgery would be refusing the will of God.

She still refused.

So I had to call child protective services and remove the child from her custody.

What do you do with an insane person like this?

So far, the only problem I've had with this display is that the process of installing the base is truly brutal.

It felt like drilling a hole with a dull knife into the skull of a large mammal (no, I haven't done that before in real life, but I can imagine it).

So much force had to be used, and I heard cracking sounds from the back panel. I thought I was breaking it in half, so I stopped.

Fortunately, the monitor still works, and the image quality is flawless.

The viewing angle is better than my old monitor, and the intense contrast ratio shows pictures in such vivid colors.

Best of all, running games at such high resolution and size really makes the experience immersive. I usually don't have a problem with motion sickness when playing FPS games, but when I was playing Far Cry 2 last night at 2048x1152 resolution, I was feeling a little dizzy.

It?s important to remind customers that Microsoft are still planning to retire XP Pro Mainstream support on April 14, 2009 and will only provide OS security updates beyond that date unless the customer has an Extended Hotfix Support contract.
So if you haven't upgraded, it may be time to do so, or you'll end up with a deadbeat OS.
