in Hammer 4 editing HL1 maps Post #73315
I assume that the new Hammer can be used to edit HL1 maps. So does it naturally follow that people can uninstall their older versions of Hammer once Source is released?

I despise redundancy.

P.S. Of course, I'm keeping my HL1 installation so I can still play HL1 maps when I feel like it. I still have the original Wolfenstein 3D installed on my laptop when I want some retro action.

in New Map Vault Section Post #73314
I believe it's time for Andy (or anyone with administrative privilege) to set up a separate section for HL2 maps. Otherwise, it would be quite confusing to figure out whether it's a Source map or the original HL.

I think it'll just be a matter of time before HL2 maps start to flood the vault, so it should be implemented very soon.

Of course, the author can always denote the type of map in the map description, but not everyone would be that responsible.

But if anyone's uneducated, this thread provides an excellent starting point to get your grammar straight.

I take special care to use proper grammar because English is not my native tongue. I consider myself well educated now, and I take pride in any given opportunity to use the language in its proper form.

Misspellings also get on my nerves, but perchance that's just my obsessive-compulsive disorder acting up.

Funny thing...I was just reading this thread this morning.

Whatever that's made so far should definitely be ported to HL2 Source. This high quality work should not be wasted. I was so impressed by the screenshots, and I am sure that they'll look even better in Source.

Jahzel has so much talent that I was unaware of before.

And there seems to be some "surf by dissing" in the map vault rating. I got a whole bunch of low ratings on my map (sometimes even more than the number of downloads) but absolutely no comments.

Have I unintentionally created an enemy in raw_rsolid? If you're going to diss me and my map, at least come out and show yourself. Be a man (or maybe you're just a girlie man).

in Compo 12 (Real World) Post #72838
Unfortunately, I believe everyone is preoccupied with the release of HL2. This competition was announced at a most inopportune time.

Perhaps our next comp would garner more interest? I would prob take a shot at it, after I master the details of Hammer 4.

It's hard to get motivated to map for HL when HL2 is just around the corner. Plus, there's the RUST comp.

Thanks, Monkey.

I've made several other clay models, but they're not suitable to be posted as avatars. They're more liked rated R ones.

The same rule applies to all the monster entities. If you place them too close to the brush beneath them, they're going to become immobile.

And don't place them too close to the brush around them either. They're going to have little yellow bugs flying around them if you do (yes, really).

Hey, who can beat mine? I specifically clay-modeled this head and took a picture of it using my camera. It's quite labor-intensive, and it's truly original.

No one mentioned "NOLF" series yet? It's an old game, but I'm still replaying it every now and then. It's got humor where no other FPS game has (and the jokes are actually pretty good). What about using a banana for a weapon?

What about the "Unreal" series? How can people forget that?

The attention to detail is just mesmerizing.

Just saw "The Incredibles". Would any one / group of people consider making a mod based on this movie? Obviously, we can't match the detail and beauty of the graphics to Pixar using the Source engine, but it should be a pretty exciting game.

It took me more than 90 minutes to upload my new map to the vault. I got a lot of patience, but it was wearing thin. It took me six or seven tries just to log on!

in Ministeve's HLDM tut. Post #72215
Great job, ministeve, with the tutorial.

However, I did have many questions even after carefully reading through its entirety. For example, it wasn't clear how many spawn points are typically located in the map (for a specific size map). And how many info_player_start vs. how many info_player_deathmatch. Does the mapper have any control over which spawn point the player becomes reincarnated? The element of style with weapon/ammo/spawn point placement should be briefly mentioned. And, of course, any one of the well-designed deathmatch maps can serve as an example for the beginners (myself included).

Fortunately for me, RabidMonkey came to the rescue for my questions. But it would be nice if these could be clearly stated as part of the tutorial.

Sometimes the seasoned pros writing the tutorial forget the knowledge they already possess and take them for granted. The beginners need every single detail spelled out, or they'll be posting questions on the forums.

in Two Towers SP map Post #72042
The original single-player Two Towers map has been converted into a deathmatch map. It's now located in the "Completed" section of the vault.

If interested, let me know what you think. Keep in mind that it's my first attempt at making a multiplayer map. In particular, I would like to know how player interaction plays out.

Thanks a bunch.

While waiting for the release of HL2, do you want to hone your grenade skills so you can better handle those Combine soldiers?

Test drive and experience the intense grenade action in "Two Towers" in the "Unfinished" section of the vault.

Oh, some feedback would be appreciated.

Has anyone been to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse? If you have been there in person, would you take a look at my map called "Santa Barbara County Courthouse" under the "Unfinished Stuff" section of the vault?

I want to make sure that the scale of the building feels right before I continue with the rest of the construction. Thanks.

You've reached the end when you exit the musuem, and then everything fades to black.

It's not too long. When I played it, it usually takes me less than five minutes to complete. But of course, I know all the secrets and locations of the grunts.

I would estimate that it should take less than fifteen minutes to go through for a new player.

The map is now located in the "Completed" section of the vault. Even though it's a puzzle map, it's still got plenty of raw action to change the pace. If you're not careful, you're probably not going to survive.

It's near completion now.

This is a single-player map. There is a significant amount of puzzle-solving involved. If it's not your style of play, don't bother with it.

Good luck if you're game.

Would anyone be interested in taking my unfinished map for a spin? I want to gather some new ideas and suggestions before the final release.

The map is called "Museum Lockdown". It's located in the "Unfinished" section in the map vault.

It's still got some rough edges, but I'm polishing it up.

Actually, it wasn't a missing texture. I never figured out why it wasn't working, but I just deleted my setup and restarted from scratch. It's working now.

Many thanks to the people who contributed their ideas, nevertheless.

Making an elevator is usually a simple task. I've done it many times before. But I am baffled by a problem with this particular lift I am building.

When I run the map, the lift disappears. When I trigger the lift, I can hear the sound effect of the lift, so I know it's being triggered. I checked the positions of the path_corners multiple times, but the elevator remains invisible. I even made a complex elevator shaft, in case some other brush is in the way of its path. But it's still not there.

After troubleshooting at it all morning, I gave up. I searched the forum, but no one else seems to have this problem.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on what might be the problem? I greatly appreciate any tips.

No need for a .dem file, because a text walkthrough would be much smaller to transfer and easier to display for everyone.

I would know if anyone cheated because. . .well, what are the cheaters going to write down as their walkthrough? That they drank Red Bull and flew down with full health?

Thanks for the tip, Captain_P!

I have tried different approaches myself, and there always seems to be more ways to make it through with more health and armor. That was the impetus to open the invitation for a competition.

I am curious to see how creative people get in their use of stealth.

This is an open competition.

I am challenging everyone to finish "Escape from Black Mesa" map with the highest health and armour. Whoever scores highest should post his or her walkthrough as a comment for that map.

And of course, that person owns the bragging right for the entire week.
