wow what a warm welcome back :D . Ill try and type more slowly and accurately for you all okay :) . Im kinda wishing i hadn't written this post because you all say your gonna enter the compo now. Having not mapped for so long all i need is more entries to compete against lol

yah it was Captain P i was thinking of.

So what ideas has everyone got for this compo so far or is that all secret until the competition is closed?

I hate to point this out but TWHL already did a compo called scripted a while back. Floater, you need to think carefully about a brief for the compo and try to give people some freedom. You also need to consider that maybe some people know more about mapping than urself.

Having said that, i like the site and its good that someone is running compos on a regular basis. Most people dont realise how long it takes to play through and judge a load of compo entries.

MoP dont be a jerk. You were a noob once and if people hadnt supported you then perhaps you would never have got into mapping. A supportive and encouraging atmosphere will help make great mappers and hence some great maps for us to play. ;)

in don't even know what to call this Post #40936
I used to map for the first unreal engine. It was no way as intuative as Hammer, u had to type in all the measurements of ur brushes etc. However, doing it all as carving out of an infinate solid is handy because you get no leaks. HL2 is gonna be the one to look forward to. Its supposed to be accessible to amateurs but also uses a very powerful engine.

in Mapping = time consuming? Post #36240
Sketching and planning definately helps. Going into hammer with no idea of what ur map is going to look like is bound to lead to a lot of time thinking and a lot of time having to redo sections because you didnt plan it out before hand.

I do 2D layouts then 3D sketches of the complicated bits and entity and trigger flow charts and stuff aswell.

in Machine Compo Post #35625
I'd say a plane or a car could be classed as a machine. I also get the feeling that taking the compo in a non-literal way is likely to impress Atom (does he judge it?) I had the idea of a spaceship/plane. I also went noclipping around the HL tram intro nd there are some nice machines there (the welding machine etc) Ive been thinking big teleporter machine thing lately but thats been done so many times before.

hmmm i think people would be a bit hesitant to give money to a site thats not very well established.

Also, once you start offering money you'll attract professional mappers. Then all us low-life mappers wouldnt have a chance.

I totally disagree with u ppl: Didnt scripted AI give birth to some of the finest moments in HL. I dont think AI has come far enough to expect a video game to create its own situations and events without some help from pre-defined orders etc. Stop persecuting Valve and let them get on with creating the best ,all be it linear, FPS ever

in The Matrix Online - Best game ever Post #12610
I think MMORPGs are the way forward as opposed to multiplayer games like counter-strike. Freedom and massive worlds offer a lot more than repetative death-matches. Matrix online could be the game that inspires a whole new genre of brilliant MMORPGS. (but i kinda doubt it lol)
