There are both decimal and binary kilobytes/megabytes/etc.
1000B = one decimal KB
1000M = one decimal gig
It should also be noted (
read: I also want to show off that I know) that 1b means one bit, not a byte. 1B is a byte (upper-case). That may explain confusing Windows DUN settings for some people telling 56kers they're connected at 56,000k
