Hi everyone. I have had this idea for a long time and I have finally got round to creating it. You play as Otis Laurey (Got his surname from the Half Life playstation 2 manual) The jolly security guard from Black Mesa.
You wake up one morning and go on your shift as normal. Except today is the day Gordon Freeman's experiment went wrong and now you're stuck in the middle of all the chaos. So, you fight your way through and escape from Black Mesa.

This mod is meant to play like Half Life: Blue Shift. You will also visit familiar places from Blue Shift and Opposing Force. Some events will be seen from Otis' perspective such as meeting Barney Calhoun at the checkpoint. By the way, the Otis who you play as, is the one with a bald head and moustache. Here's a quick list of what I have done so far...

-Made a mod folder in the Half Life directory
-Used the Pak file from Blue shift, so the player hands are security guard ones.
-I have placed the HEV suit at the very start, at the player start marker and disabled the HEV sounds. I have also changed the model for the HEV batteries to Body armour so it looks likes you pick up armour to get more armour points.
-edited the sentences.txt file so the security guards and scientists don't call you "Gordon" or "Freeman".
-Made two maps with a smooth transition.

What I need to do is change the HUD images to blue.

This mod is being fun to create and I want to share my idea with others. Here are some screenshots...

It's quite a nice idea.
Although it's certainly not original, if it's pulled off well then it could really work.

As far as those screenies go, the maps look very blocky and lacking detail. Work on it.

Thanks espen180! You're a god send. About the name, I didn't really want to make it scientific because well, long story short I couldn't think of a name that suited the mod but I'm open to any name suggestions. Thanks.

Well the events are going to be similiar to Blue Shift. I haven't really thought of specific events, yet, but when I do I shall post the plot here.

Espen: Sure the half-life and it's expansionpaks names has a scientific meaning, but they also make sence.

Half-life.. well, that one might not make any sense..
Opposing force: simply the opposing force, they used to be your enemies, they are now your allies.
Blue shift: Half-life was quite orange and red, however barney is dressed in a blue uniform and therefore it's a blue shift.

They make double sense.
So, a name like "Redshift" would not fit for this "otis mod" at all.
It has to make double sense.
If it's gonna have a sientific name, it has to do with otis also (or anything else in the mod).

Congrats on that third picture. When I was making the train intro in Blue Shift for Source I got to that bit and stopped because it was annoying to make with that curved wall.

1) Add a config.cfg file to your mod directory. You can copy it from the valve folder.
2) Find the hud_color line.
3a) If it's not there, add a line saying "hud_color 0 0 255 " (without the quotes)
3b) If you find it, change the values to "0 0 255" (without the quotes)

I once tryed to make a mod where you play as a security guard - it never worked. keep at it!

Now you made me want to go make some maps. :quizzical:

It's not the most original idea, so you'll have to create something pretty awesome to make it stand out of all those mods taking place in Black Mesa. (Life's End, is a pretty good example of pure creativity in mapping. It was immense, even without any new weapons, monsters, etc.)

Good luck pulling this off.

Tell me - do you play as bald Otis from OpFor or mustachioed Otis from Blue Shift? PLEASE tell me OpFor Otis. Maybe it's just because I played OpFor before Blue Shift, or maybe it's just that OpFor > Blue Shift (and even Half-Life itself, IMO) - but I find Otis hideous with a moustache.

Indeed, though, you need to implement lots of new content. Otherwise it's essentially Blue Shift, but twice as long due to the player's halved movement speed. :sarcastic:

Erm, bald Otis is moustachioed Otis. The other otis had a full head of hair and no moustach. They both appeared in OpFor. Only bald otis appearead in blue shift (twice during the tram ride and in the shooting range) and in model viewer you can see a black otis who wasn't used. :(

Wait a second I tried that.
It just deletes it and doesnt work.

I added the hud_color R G B and it has no effect whatsoever.
If I check the .cfg afterwards, the line has disappeared.

Changing the colour has been one thing I've always wanted to do with Half-Life, I hate the orange HUD now.

but but but, you cant be the otis with the facial hair becasue he doesnt have sleeves. and you cant use the barney hands becuase they DO have sleeves

Hmm the pics look good!

but... i have a question:

1.Are you otis?
probably thats yes but im not sure

2.If im otis... do i get a candy bar istead of a crowbar? :D :D

3. Have u changed all the sounds to the otis ones and made the player mutch slower than before because otis is fat?

4. isnt otis jelous of all the 'sexy' barnies xD because hes fat? :cool:

Just using the Blue Shift sounds aren't quite right either. There are a few times where they say something along the lines of "Hey Calhoun!" (I think that stuff is only pre-disaster though, so if your mod starts AFTER the disaster, then it SHOULD be alright).

by the way, Blue Shift was (also) called Blue Shift because (if you read the PC manual) barney is on a shift towards a promo in working in the higher sectors of sector C, so thats why you get them 'special' task/s. you see, there was a red shift, yellow shift, orange shift etc, so it will be pretty dumb to call it 'Red Shift' becasue in the manual, red shift is acually training in personal dormitorys..

It should be obvious that the manual timetable, and the other coloured shifts were designed to suit the term 'Blue-Shift', especially considering Half-Life's science themes.

Also, if I remember correctly, a Red-Shift is a scientific term too, the opposite of a Blue-Shift.

I reckon it's a great idea. Black Mesa kinda hit a dead end after Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Half-Life, Half-Life Escape (Scientist), Half-Life Decay (Gina and Ms Cross). There aren't many roles left you can make. I came up with an idea that you play an engineer in the Black Mesa Power Core. You and a partner are responsible for supplying power to most of Black Mesa. However, during the experiment, the Core overloads and you have to prevent it from detonating in a nuclear blast! I didn't bother to work on the idea though, too many other projects. Espen is right though, use a different name.

Tosse, what's your problem? You don't have to like it, your comment was unnesseray. I couldn't give a crap what you think about this, but I know that I am working hard on this mod, by myself. You shouldn't be on this forum if you say a thing like "HL all over again". This is a forum for H-A-L-F L-I-F-E map editing so obviously there will be many Half Life mods. Just get a life and quit flaming people, I may be a "newb" on this forum but I am not a "noob".

Hey why not start off the mod post disaster style.

Otis in dorm, things go nuts, they tell you to go down below beacuse they're calling for back up and no one on the surface has any idea what it is. You go in fully loaded. Cave in leaves you trapped - you work your way, vents etc, to get to security station to find dead bodies of aliens and guards. You can then using the existing files from Blue Shift to get to the Armoury and Armour UP - shoties etc.
