Would it be possible
for twhl to buy a server (HLDM HL2DM etc etc) and have paypal donations to keep it running.
So the members here can see their maps in action instead of just having good *** (5 star) maps rot in the vault

because i know for a fact that if even one of my maps were in rotation i would donate via paypal to keep the server up.

Look to FPSB or some other large community for that kind of publicity. I do regular google searches on my maps and most of them are in a good amount of servers' map cycles.

Yeah, but you would have to be well known for that, and I'd say you're at least partially well known at places like FPSB. I like this idea, but I'm not sure it would work.I mean, if TWHL just kicked the can one day, somebody could be left with a hell of a lot of money and there'd be nothing to do with it.

Besides, who would pay for this? You? Rimrook? He's the only other one I've ever heard mention donating to TWHL. I kinda doubt you could keep a server afloat with nothing but small donations... aren't these things normally like 50 dollars a month?

Best case scenario, somebody with a decent internet connection comes in and sets up a computer dedicated to this... and I don't see why that would be too hard for anyone.

You don't necessarily have to be well known. A lot of people go out and mass-download maps for their servers.
What happened to Muzzleflash's? Its obviously down now, but why?
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-16 04:23:04 UTC Post #232239
He figured it was a waste of money. Nobody ever joined.

If anything, a more pertinent issue is the server that TWHL is actually hosted on. As was mentioned, getting donations would be somewhat difficult.

There's a problem with the autoupdate Steam function, which, for reasons unkown, goes wrong and causes the server to crash.

I just need to restart it manually, and then everything works fine. Its just that autoupdate thing thats not working properly.

srry, stfu.

err...'bout 10 minutes.

Manual update goes fine. Its not a Steam related problem, the problem is in the PHP code or autoupdate script that handles the autoupdate.

Steam is working fine!

Ok well
I'm gonna dedicate a server for a week
im going to be going on vacation to New Hampshire starting saturday (but i'll be at 6flags all friday)

so as long as my computer doesnt update (vista updates like once a month)

we should be all set.

SO once i dedicate it... which IP would you connect to

my computer's IP or the server's IP?

I could host one if needed but would be no more than 6-8 player. Source or Goldsrc.
I could also host any maps if requested. When I have previously had a running server I got a regular flow of members and got good feedback on my maps. Even got some good ideas from the regulars.

Why is Tetsu0 using his internal IP address for us to connect to? :)

Muzz and I have been trying to fix the HL2DM server.

Our hosting company will now be monitoring our server, to see what happens when the server crashes.

I hope they will find a solution asap.

Grim is right. The only IP that could be less useful would be 127.0.0.1

Just make sure it doesn't start with 192.XXX.XXX.XXX

If everything (including your router) is set up correctly, then people should be able to connect to the IP this site gives you.

This is a good place to help you configure your router.

EDIT: Heh, just remembered both sites give you the IP, so take your pic. =P

Thanks Muzz I'll get right on that.
And @ Alexb911, my holiday (vacation as some call it also) was fantastic. It's great to get away from work and the internet and just chillax up in New Hampshire.
Lighting bottle rockets off boats, water skiing, doing double frontflips off a 15foot high dock into 6foot deep water :)

Great fun.

opened a port.
