Hello. I'm looking for a good video recorder, and FRAPS sucks. Have anybody tried ASUS Gamer OSD?
Posted 16 years ago2008-08-23 11:48:13 UTC Post #254381
FRAPS doesn't suck, the only downside is the large file-sizes which is hardly an issue after compression. What don't you like about it?

Try CamStudio.

CamStudio.. I'll have to look at that.

FRAPS drops my framerates from 120 down to like.. 5-10, 20 at best.

fraps is recording all my full screen, not just the game I want to record. So it's recording all my desktop + the game, 1680 x 1050 videos, 12 seconds = 200 MB
Posted 16 years ago2008-08-23 13:54:05 UTC Post #254389
...so record the video at half-size and compress it afterwards.

That's messed up. FRAPS shouldn't do that @_@

I'm also looking for a good program to record what ever is on the screen. I tried Fraps but uninstalled it 30 minutes later, I didn't like it one bit.

Well in my opinion it's the best you can get. The other stuff is typical generic crap that doesn't even stand out. So if you don't like Fraps which even a baby can use then well you're stuffed.

What's not to like? Did it not serve you your milkshake you poor thing?

despite habboi acting like a prat, fraps is indeed as good as it gets for cheap.

I agree with potatis_invalid, CamStudio is great at what it does and it is perhaps the best desktop video recorder in the freeware category. Now, I don't know how many of you already know this, but there is this other program called "Quick Media Converter", which is basically an universal audio and video converter that's also freeware. Quick Media Converter can convert from a bunch of different audio & video formats to and from, including some of the very latest formats. But one of the best features it has, is that it comes with CamStudio built in! So if you are planning to get CamStudio, it won't hurt to get the whole packaged deal by going with Quick Media Converter instead, after all, you still will be getting CamStudio. You can find Quick Media Converter here: http://www.cocoonsoftware.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13&Itemid=106

Habboi, not liking Fraps doesn't make us "stuffed". It's a matter of opinion.

Fraps is Free. Just not the full version. But I got that for free too.

It is pretty good but I would recommend it for dual-cores only.

Saying that I run a single core 3.0Ghz and it doesn't affect my FPS at all.

Uh sorry you see in Britain when we say 'stuffed' we mean you're screwed, there's noting left, no options, game over etc.

It's just from experience, there aren't many to choose from and by far Fraps is always updated and so simple. It works on Vista and picks up sound yay :D I owe Fraps.

But why am I defending it, who knows, I don't care :D Pick whatever dude but sometimes trust what others suggest.

Fraps is good for others, I'm sure. Otherwise it wouldn't have such a huge fanbase.

But it didn't really do the job for me, it didn't record all the games, it didn't record the desktop and the final result wasn't useable either. Some of the videos worked, some didn't, some had sound, some didn't. If it behaved this way because it wasn't really compatable with Vista yet, I'm not sure but still, I'll try something else the next time.

hold down the screenshot key while you're playing and string them together in virtualdub later.

Umm.... fraps is the best ....
The solution to those HUGE ( fucking HUGE ) recorded files is to set a low resolution .

Both Fraps and CamStudio has downsides and benefits.
Doesn't matter what you use as long as it works the way you want.

I agree that the file-sizes Fraps outputs are insane, I recorded a 1 minute stint of NFS and was about 1GB, but slap it in a Video Editor for 2 minutes and it'll come out whatever size you want it.

Other than that, I loooove it - its so simple to use, they know what people who use it want, and having used Fraps and CamStudio, I think Fraps does a much better job and has less impact on performance.

Oh by the way best tips on using FRAPS is to use half-size, set FPS to I think it was 30 and have FRAPS run on a drive that's not part of the PC aka an external drive and have it output video in the external HDD.

It supposedly runs better.
