The new competition is here, finally :D

Discussion goes here.

Some things to remember-

Just because I like to run things by people a few times, ill mention a few commonly overlooked means of disqualification.

1. Make sure it works in a game that we have allowed such as:

Half-Life 1
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life 2: episode 2
Portal

We have not decided if we're allowing Spirit yet. Depending on your concern, we might or might not.

2. Include an informative readme along the lines of:

Entry: Deth Ball
Map Technical Name: Compo26_TheGrimReafer_DethBall
By: TheGrimReafer
Game: Portal
Any comments or mentions

Absolutely make sure your map's technical name has no spaces, no funky characters, and it has to have your username in it. Absence of such will cause disqualification.

3. If you have custom content, make sure it's in the appropriate file structure.

Dont give us a free for all style folder with all needed models, sounds, and BSP's in it for us to place where it goes. I'm sure you can imagine how annoying that becomes.

Custom content will not win your entry for you.

4. Send your entries in .zip or .rar.

We have hard-drives too, heh.

5. Get it in on time.

We're sticking to the deadline on this one. If need for exception arises, PM me or Daubster about it.

As far as prizes go, we have no money to give you this time. What we do have, however, is the ability to give you a fancy trophy for your member page, a mini-review, and the first-place winner gets to decide the next competition.

Source and Goldsource entries will be judged together.

We swear we'll make un-biased judging according to the limitations of the engines.

That pretty much sums it up.

That all being said, be sure to have some fun with this one. We're hoping for a good turnout this time :combine:

You have just over six weeks. Commence-

Judges will accept any types of cake as an elaborate & blatant form of bribing.

.. so to avoid any do-gooders ruining things for you, send cake via PM.

I don't think spirit should be allowed. Valve singleplayer games only, methinks.

You do understand a custom mod with any coding changes would give one a very big advantage over people with no coding skills. Otherwise, there's really no need for minimod format in a compo where only the puzzle element plays the main role.

I have hd 4850 . Lucky you . But it works great on my computer too . The Ati drivers are the problem . I can't run hammer and I have problems with OpenGL applications .

[EDIT] Sohl allowed ?

potatis I have Vista LOL and it's good, it only takes 10% more ram than xp and isn't slower than it.

And Striker, have you instaled the last drivers from amd site? Because I don't have any problem with it, and you shouldn't, so no, don't take another card and fix the problem, update Vista or something.

I'm using XP and I'm up-to-date . I'm not going to discuss about my problem here because it's totally off-topic . Most of the active members know my problem . And I talking about hammer 3.5

"and isn't slower than it." Ehm, yes it is. Probably not slow enough for you to notice, but it IS slower.
@The_(c)Striker: I thought that was an ATI+Vista problem only. Guess I was wrong.

I will join this competition, after I have finished my CS map.

OK, so no minimod format, but can it still be multiple maps, as long as i make the appropriate adaptations to the readme?

Believe me, I'm horrible when I'm given a single map to work with. That's why I suck at making MP maps.

As many as you like. Connect them with a level change for better game flow, though.

Sohl allowed ?
Also, multiple entries allowed???

And what about just challenges? Like an Indiana Jones and the Last crusade type challenges??
Posted 16 years ago2008-09-17 21:56:13 UTC Post #255570
Kk hlife_hotdog.

1. No SoHL

2. No "multiple entries", but you can include multiple puzzles inside of one entry which is basically the same thing as submitting multiple entries anyway. You may have more than one map as part of a single entry.

3. It could be that, yes.. But it's really any puzzle you want. By definition off of Dictionary.com, a puzzle is:

a toy, problem, or other contrivance designed to amuse by presenting difficulties to be solved by ingenuity or patient effort.

You just need to create a puzzle, an obstical, or a trap that us judges have to get around. The more original it is, the more points you get.

I think I'll use vanilla half-life. A puzzle may prove a little more difficult, but that is the impressive part of some puzzles well done in HL.

We've still got all sorts of things to use if we use them right.

Example:

doors, rotating doors, toggle walls, trains, rotating buttons, momentary buttons and doors

My map is gonna be called 'The Three Trials of King Armilo' and i'm gonna be more open with this one that previous comps cause i wanna provide ideas cause this is a hard subject to map for. Prepare for the screenies!!!

You have a point there. However, it's actually not much of a problem for the judges to replace/re-replace the titles/sentences/model files, so if you really need that, go right ahead and include it.

Though I actually wouldn't be too much against minimod format for those kind of things, as they might play quite a role in the puzzle.

if your entry is in mod format, the judges will copy over the steam DLLs into your dll directory before testing it (to avoid custom code). if it doesn't work, it's your own fault.

Heh, I wouldn't know where to start with coding and I can't very well ask the DPGames coder because he's a forum moderator. :P

Actually. I will just use Vanilla HL. I've had a new idea. I'm in.

Hey judges...Make sure you still have WON HL. Cuz i dunno if mines will work on steam.
Posted 16 years ago2008-09-18 07:18:46 UTC Post #255596
Minimum requirement is a .BSP file (or files) that works with Steam HL or the latest version of HL2:EP1, EP2, or Portal.
Anyway, HL 1.1.1.0 doesn't differ that much from Steam HL. If your map works flawlessly on WON it should work fine on Steam as well.

I'd like to see a giant rubik's cube which when solved threw out a super awesome price.

Of course the entity work involved would be ultimatly, mind-bendingly fucked up the arse.
monster_urby monster_urbyGoldsourcerer
Posted 16 years ago2008-09-18 21:00:10 UTC Post #255637
Absolutely. I created a fake cube from the movie 'Cube 2 : Hypercube' Each room had six doors on each side (with ladders to get to them), when you went through a door it would take you to another room but if you went back through the same door it took you to a completely different room. lol. that was simple really but hard enough in itself.

My entry 'The Three Trials of King Armilo' is actually gonna be 5 puzzles/challenges. One to get in the temple, three trials and then one to get out. I've just started but so far so good. I'm gonna use Vanilla HL too but i'm gonna use alot of custom content and there is already too many entities to work with lol
