Well it looks like someone is giving an old Source mod a serious facelift. This isn't a thread to discuss the mod if you've never played it. I'm just letting everyone know that it will eventually look like this:

But it is a cool mod if you've never played it.

Who needs crysis, [enter any new game graphic engine] and other shitty new graphic engines? Valve is da best!

It's almost too realistic. It scares the hell out of me.

What, like Fakefactory? I doubt it. This is more like Black Mesa, except it's still on the same engine.

Wow this is cool. Dear Esther had a great premise, and some of the best voice acting I've heard in a Source mod. It was basically the mapping and the long walks that let it down, but from what he's saying in that blog, he's got it all sorted out.

If you watch the video where he is editing the displacement mesh, you can see the insane number of polys that go into those landscapes.

I played dear Esther a long time ago and I can't remember much, but I know it was a damn good mod. I don't know how it can be scarry, it made me feel bad ... like crying. But not scarry.

Anyway, DUDE THAT'S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE. The first screenshot : wtf ?! in source ? that grass ? omg !
Sorry for the constructive OMGs.

It's a good thing displacements are pretty cheap in Source. I wonder what he's doing to optimise for the large draw distances, though.

People always underestimate with Source. ;>

Valve stick to a pretty tight texture/memory budget for the sake of a larger audience, but for the people who don't stick to that budget, there's no reason Source can't look as good as the more modern engines (Crytek being a pretty bloaty exception).

Well, I once had a map with 2048x2048 textures, it was a big map, and the fps was surely affected. But it's not the texture resolution the idea here.
Just look what I'm talking about :

This can be the subject of a tutorial : how to make an extremely realistic terrain like the one in the mod Dear Esther.

If this is considered "realistic" then i wonder what you guys will say when you see metal gear solid on the playstation one.

Good lord my eye's are burning from the blockiness, all of a sudden using 2048x2048 textures makes up for making terrible terrain?

EDIT: OH MY GAWD THERE ARE 2 WHOLE THINGS ON SCREEN THATS AMAZING!

EDIT: Holy shit, they made it so there's even less stuff on-screen, THATS EPIC111oneoen

NH= Yodalman

1st: Your grid is overly simplified and there are obviously more triangles used than in your image.

2nd: That 2nd screenshot is so painfully obviously a WIP shot.

3rd: You're a hopeless excuse for a troll, you can't map for shit, and nobody in this community (or any other) gives a flying tumour-infested testicle about your opinion.

Am I flaming? Yeah, so what. This guy, as a community member, is a genuine pain in the ass, whose only purpose is to annoy and enrage other members. His posts are so meaningless and unhelpful that it is almost offensive, and I hope for his sake that he does not act like such an impossibly arrogant scum fuck in real life, lest he never feel the warmth of a woman he didn't need to pay for.

I'd also like to point out that Yodalman's picture uses...squares? I'm sure that source uses triangles as ALL ground based polygons use now, even we use them in Half-Life one...

However, how long until Yodalman comes back as someone else?

On another note, I haven't played this mod although i did see it when it first got released. You guys all say is mostly worth it so I'll have a look when the improved version is released...bring on the 400mb download!! :glad:

Smart idea, I think. The original was really clever, but you had to look past a lot of problems with it's mapping and pacing.

Remake looks like it'll be an awesome way to experience it for a first time.

If those environments were desaturated any more we'd be looking at blank grey screens.

According to his blog those daytime screens are outdated now, this is his new lighting. I think it could really use some more contrast and saturation.

That video of the ocean and skybox in motion is very impressive though.

I haven't played the original to know if it suits the theme of the mod, but those screenshots sure are bland and monotonous.
