I dont know about some of the changes to my favorite game of all time, but I always hated that level anyways.

The anime-style voice acting would piss me right the f**k off.

Everything else looks great though.

Yeah voice acting is ridiculous.

The rest... looks very good. Can't wait to see this released.

They've confirmed that all the content in that video is pretty much final, including the voice acting for the soldiers.

Quote:
Everything is intentional; the soldiers are meant to sound like over-the-top movie bad guys. We're not interested in trying to get you to empathise with the enemies.
Source is here: Link

Initially I was quite shocked that they would do something that dumb, but after thinking about it a bit, the idea is growing on me somewhat. If you listen to the voices of the soldiers in HL1, they're actually pretty damn similar, just that the radio static makes it far less obvious. The radio static makes absolutely no sense when the soldiers are right next to each other, either.

I think they're going to get lots of backlash over that particular decision, because, you know, people on the internet are basically a bunch of entitled pricks. Knowing that, it would probably be better if they just made them sound like boring old soldiers, rather than trying to put a B-movie spin on them. That said, they throw Freeman into a trash compactor instead of shooting him. Tell me that isn't something straight out of a B-movie :P

ANYWAY....it looks great and I want to play it right now!

Love the scene in hl1 when they talk about me and I'm right behind them.

Though in the video the player takes too many hits. Hopefully the hardest difficulty will have even health points so enemies don't take forever to kill like hl1.

I only hope they'll release it soon. How long has this been in development? since 2005?

One of my favorite bits right there.

It will come.

Soon.

Still not going to watch this one because of the spoilers. I don't want to see everything they've done until I have the mod in my hands. Also because one of the developers requested that anyone who hasn't seen the video not watch it, and the team is trying to get the videos taken down.

Of course, now that it's so widespread, they can't take down all the mirrors.

It's... so pretty. I'm terribly excited.

I think the voice acting fits right in. It's exactly how Half-Life was and that's fine with me.

Maybe I'm numb or something, but I don't know how leaks could happen. Did some worker preemptively share a video with their cousin or something and they said "Sure I'll keep it to myself" and then share it on the net to everyone?

I know there was at least one serious developer leak where a random guy just walked into the dev office, walked into their server room, and walked out with some Hard Drives. Bungie now has finger print locks on their server room for that reason, heh.

Other times it might be a slip from closed beta testers, or from company-outsourced work with people not under explicit NDA's.

I'm ok with everything in the video.

This is one of the worst chapters of HL but its definitly looking good and I have faith in the devs and the changes they are making.

We probably won't see this coming out for another 3 years, I'm sure. :/

One of the lead devs said it's coming out "soonish" in a recent interview. I'd guess that's another year or so down the line.

Not sure if I like the soldiers' voice acting. Maybe it'll grow on me, but at the moment I would've preferred regular voices. To me it just doesn't sit right with the rest of the mod being ultra-attentive to adding realism/logic to the original environments.

The mod was probably good for release now, but they sent out a video right now to see what was wrong. Clearly the voices so they can work another 3 years on that then make another audience test.

It's a tad dark for my tastes, but then again that chapter is set at night.
And with regards to the voice acting, I don't think it's too far beyond the realms of possibility that someone might release their own version of the lines. But then again, that could take too much effort for someone to do in their free time.
Either way, while I don't particularly like the voice acting, that was the dev-team's decision, and it doesn't really detract from the rest of the game.

I beleive a developer said that the video was darker than the game is because of the video being at a lower resolution as well as compressed. Can't remember where I saw that, though. Somewhere on the forums.

Oh my, that looks great! I'm really digging the hud effects when you take damage.
The anime-style voice acting would piss me right the f**k off.
I was totally thinking, "What does anime-style voice acting even sound like?" It was soooooooooooooo clear when the soldiers started talking.

Unfortunately, they're also fixing something that doesn't really need fixing, so all the standard grunts have to wear gas masks.
Which is a shame, because the face creation system allowed for a lot of different faces and accessories for the grunts' heads.
I realize the radio voices are a nostalgia point, but I don't see why every grunt needs to have them, especially when 2/3 of the regular grunts didn't wear gas masks in the first place.

I'm hating on it because it sucks. Same guy, both voices, too melodramatic.

I both kind of agree and disagree. The static makes the grunts sound more dangerous and evil, but it will be a shame to lose the extra face details. There's nothing wrong with the actors voice, he just shouldn't be reading his lines like he's auditioning for a porn film.

Lol, I agree with Strider. But the voices weren't off-putting enough for me to in any way diminish my excitement for the mod. The gameplay looks good, and orthodox.

THAT EXACTLY.

I think it completely ruins the mood.

...maybe if they changed the soundtrack to something like this...
