I want some games, dammit!
Posted 11 years ago2013-09-23 22:41:58 UTC Post #315896
So all the games available on Steam isn't enough for you? Sure, you need to stream most of them from a Windows PC, but it's not like you'd put something like SteamOS on your primary PC anyway.

I bought a Raspberry Pi a while ago that I haven't had time to do anything with yet, it'd be pretty cool if SteamOS worked on that. Otherwise my HTPC runs Ubuntu already, so if there's a decent XMBC solution on SteamOS I'd be very interested in switching over.

Ooooh! Now I can force all of my friends to play Deus Ex, and Bioshock: Infinite, and Half-Life 2, and Euro Truck Simulator, and Papers, Please, and...

Family sharing is really kicking it up a notch. Another advantage consoles had, evened out!

Am i understanding this correctly, Valve are widening their gamer audience to a console, like was rumored? (great news for workshoppers if it takes off!)

Now that i have a couch that isn't infested with dog hair (AKA my own place) i've been spending more time in front of the TV.

It'd be great if I could console up with steam games I ALREADY OWN!

We need more cardboard maps.

I think it would improve at-home multiplayer like Left 4 Dead. I like the idea a lot.

Probably gonna be some Linux port crap.
But than again, why have a shit load of operating systems when you can have just one for games? So thats a big plus.

Plus, there is like 10 000 games out there you can play, from 2D to 3D.

I'm not sure if it is good to have an OS that dominates all others on video gaming. Is Valve planning to walk hand in hand with Linux against Microsoft?

Very interesting nonetheless. One more hour left for the next release of information.

That is basically what this gen and the next gen of consoles are - purpose-focused PCs - and millions of people invest in them despite owning PCs. Also the ability to stream from a more powerful gaming rig is brilliant.

There are games that are always going to be better at a desk with a mouse and keyboard - FPS, RTS, TBS, Simulations, etc. but I much prefer playing platformers, sports games and beat-em-ups on the couch. It's a far more social environment. I don't buy into consoles, though, because the games are overpriced and the systems are extremely closed. An open system with Steam's prices? Fucking yes.

Not so dramatically, but Gabe has been very outspoken about his dislike for Windows 8 and its closed nature (the exact same reasons I hate consoles and Apple) so it makes sense that he's moving Valve onto the only remaining open platform. The SteamOS will not be competing as a desktop alternative. Not yet, at least.

Windows 8 is only "closed" on the Surface.(I realize now what "closed" refers to) The desktop version is ok, it's just the endless discussions about the Metro UI. That's why I'm waiting for 8.1, native boot-to-desktop without additional programs.

[EDIT] Steam Machines.

IMO this will pulverize the current console market.

[EDIT2] I don't know what this is, if it's real or fake, I got it from r/halflife:

There isn't a lot more to say. Actually there is.. but I guess I was just busy dreaming about the possibilities... It looks very exciting and interesting!

And that new controller looks marvelous, I just hope that it is comfortable as well. The biggest issue about designing a game which utilized the keyboard and mouse the most, was that it was very problematic to port it to a another platform. Well, not problematic in a technical sense but it is very uncomfortable to play FPS or RTS games on a console as most of you would agree. Basicly, the new controller means a larger target audience for the developers. But like I said, everything is looking fantastic but is it also comfortable and functional? That I can not say without testing, I hope a member from TWHL gets to try those innovations.

Ooooh I get it now...

And I'm sober...

No regrets...

Anyway, why don't they allow people to hook up a mouse/keyboard to the console? It'd make chat a easier, better UI navigation, and yet still allow the controller for those who like it too.

Honestly, Super Matt Jordan plays better on a controller. It was originally designed for one but was quickly scrapped and controls were reformed a month after dev started. I'd love to see SMJ on this console just for shits and giggles.

Rimrook, why make the assumption that a keyboard and mouse isn't allowed on the console? They specifically say in the FAQ that they will continue to support K&M input. Also, you can use this Steam controller on your PC, or you could use an Xbox controller on your Steam console. Everything is interchangeable, no locked-down restrictions.
