when setting up the half life sdk more specifically hammer it asks me to set up an configuration no problem there iv done that before everything else works fine but when i select any .fgd hammer has an "hammer has stopped responding looking for a solution" error immediately upon chosing and .fgd i dont even have to push apply and all i can do is close it any help to solve this would be greatly appreciated
Posted 7 years ago2017-04-16 00:38:42 UTC Post #334388
Have you tried it with different .fgds?

Know this doesn't help with your error, but I'd highly recommend using Sledge instead of Hammer.

I find it more flexible and more stable than Hammer- MOST OF THE TIME PB -, and it's a lot less of a pain-in-the-ass to set up. Also does things that Hammer doesn't, like offers a wider variety of brush primitives--including TEXT!--, and so much more.

yes any .fgd causes this
Posted 7 years ago2017-04-16 05:39:06 UTC Post #334393
thanks captain terror i will try it but i would still like to fix this problem because there are some things that only work with hammer more specificly third party programs
Posted 7 years ago2017-04-16 10:24:59 UTC Post #334401
Could you be more specific about these third party programs? Sledge has had plugin support planned from the earliest versions - it would be good for Pebs to know where the demand is.

And I'm actually building it into Sledge right now! More for my own sanity than anything else, because moving everything into plugins forces me to remove messy spaghetti code in the whole thing. But building plugins will be pretty easy in the next version of Sledge, and since all the bundled stuff will be plugins too, it should be fairly flexible.

Don't try to evangelise too hard though guys, it's one thing to mention that it exists but Sledge is (by far) not a solution to every problem. (yet?)

I will still recommend Sledge over Hammer to anyone.

It's not like Sledge Editor is the only alternative. There are:
  • QuArk
  • Radiant
  • J.A.C.K.
And so on...

What Tet said. we aren't blowing smoke up your ass, it's waaaay better than Hammer imo ;)

Besides some Texture Properties quirks and Visgroups are wonkey as hell, those are the only major issues I can think of left. dem and the occasional random crash, but hey Hammer crashes too :)

As previously discussed too--and we learnt this during the last teammapping, that you can render A LOT more objects in Sledge with smoother fps than in Hammer too, if I'm not mistaken.

Speaking of Sledge, I'd like to point out that the 2D viewports don't refresh on my end. If I move a brush, it moves in the 3D view, but the rest is frozen. Definitely doesn't affect the rest of you, doesn't it? :P
Ah well, the "advantages" of older hardware.

But the 3-point cutting is just brilliant.
but hey Hammer crashes too
J.A.C.K. crashes too. :^(
Though, on the course of 2 years it crashed 10 times, in the entity property window.

Hammer is a buggy nightmare. OK nightmare may be taking it a bit far, but the amount of issues itself has, the paranoid side of me almost feels Valve have built imperfection into it?

Even when Sledge beta full of bugs was better than Hammer imo, and it's come a long way since den. Sledge combined with the VHLT--and HLFix!--tools are a powerful combination; everything is easy-breezy beautiful, all the time User posted image

Don't disable UAC but assign proper access rights.

UAC is modern cancer for Windows and its gotten worse after Windows 7. Sure it helps from most malware that was written by idiots, but if you work with system folders (Program Files is one of them) its a pain in the ***.
I have to completely disable it to allow file copying to system drives (even C:\).

Also if want to avoid compilation errors that are file related, don't install hammer and vlht (or any derivative) in C:\ drive or at least not in Program Files.

Amen.

BTW: I did try Vista in the past, but have a lot of trouble with Hammer, Quark, Half-Life, Milkshape, Goldwave, Gimp, Photoshop, SpriteExplorer, Wally, PakExplorer, etc, etc, etc. Finally uninstalled it, returned to WinXP SP3 and all worked like a charm except MSVC6++, which needed some tweakinng. Now I´m with W7 32Bits (stupid me, I cannot use whole RAM!!), and since 2011 I never had any BSOD, BS, hangouts, nothing.

Sledge map save files aren't compatible with Hammer unless you save as a RMF.

I liked vista when it first launched. Though It did have some crazy compatibility issues, I remember mapping on it just fine.

Let me ask you something though, you have the half life SDK but do you want to make just maps or start changing code?

If you want to map, all you need is the game, map editor, and a pak explorer
