Okay, I will post work on our new post content recommendation here, a kinda readme for people new to the forums.

Comments (constructive; no spam) welcome.

This will be based on this page (but less aggressive :) ).

Points so far other than those mentioned on the above page:
  • You can't post text-based diagrams on the forums (using lines and underscores to try and show people things).
  • Check the tutorials
  • Check the Entity Guide before asking entity questions (it's a great resource!)

  • Define your problem in a clear way, give the necessary information on what you did and where your problem appeared.
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-24 06:42:46 UTC Post #35957
  • Do not name topics something like "I AM A NOOB HELP ME PLZ", decribe the problem.

On mailing lists, newsgroups or Web forums, the subject header is your golden opportunity to attract qualified experts' attention in around 50 characters or fewer. Don't waste it on babble like ?Please help me? (let alone ?PLEASE HELP ME!!!!?; messages with subjects like that get discarded by reflex). Don't try to impress us with the depth of your anguish; use the space for a super-concise problem description instead.
Already featured on the 'base' page.

Okay, I've cobbled something together. It ended up rather an expanded version of Where to start? but with more of a focus on getting people to look things up in the resources we've prepared rather than spamming. It's not final. Have a look at the Adobe Acrobat version or the Word version and comment!

Back to sanity. I think that should welcome all new people when they join. It might work, hopefully...

I try to say hello to new dudes, but stopped a while ago. When I started here, Kol said hello.

I try to answer there noob questions, but some are too complicated for me, seeing that I am pretty new to mapping. I've been mapping for 200 days, exactly.
