I got a nasty virus and now I'm having to reinstall Windows. Thank god I'm using like a million partitions, and I'm smart enough to install all my games and important files off of C:\ so I didn't have to do much backing up.

My only concern is that I won't be able to register Windows again.

Edit: great, now I accidentally overwrote my entire movie storage drive with Windows because it reported the drive letters wrong in the setup. And the previous Windows was still intact. That'll ruin your day.

how'd you get it?

if you download/install a virus to d: it can't migrate to c: or any other partitions?

I don't know how I got it except I turned AVG off for about a day and in that timeframe it picked it up. This thing redirected me to a spam page every time I tried to go to any website, and it blocked AVG from accessing its update servers. Spybot mysteriously stopped working altogether.

I don't think it did any damage to any of my files, viruses usually don't spread like that for me.

Pretty easy to solve with system-restore. Just bring your PC back like 1 week to be sure. Then your AVG will work again. The virus is still there, and now your AVG can pickup the virus and remove it.

This doesnt work with ALL viruses

I disable System Restore just to be safe.

And potatis I agree, ubunutu is an awesome way to waste your time away toying with an operating system with next to no support that will take months to learn to use properly. I'm sorry, but I have much better things to do with my time than grow a neckbeard. If that means having to reinstall my OS every two or three years, so be it.

I learned to use it properly in about a week. It's easier than Windows XP/Vista and OS X to use once you get used to it, even my not-very-technological mother uses it.
Windows is messed up, but you have to use it thanks to most games being built with DirectX (why haven't EU done anything about it yet?).

I have a virus too. It seems to only make .tmp files in C/:, but when my anti-virus found and deleted part of it's replication chain, it gave me constant error messages, 'cause it kept trying to reboot itself. I can sometimes get the errors to stop and keep using the computer, though.
