Fun with malware.
I just recently got infected with the
Windows 7 Antispyware 2012 virus, and man, they make these things nastier and nastier every time.
i'm pretty sure i contracted the the problem by accidentally clicking an ad banner, and then when avast popped up, i chose the wrong action rather than "open in sandbox" or "cancel opening".
After infection i could not:
-access msconfig
-open anything pined to the taskbar without it poping up and starting a new instance of itself (msv.exe win32)
-open any gadgets or sevendeskbar(dockable toolbar program for win7) without it popping up.
-could not open firefox without it being automatically pinned to the taskbar, for a nefarious reason no doubt.
Thankfully, i could still access the internet and find/download the fixes. I'm just finishing an anti-malwarebytes scan now to make sure it's gone.
I would highly recommend to anyone to copy your windows/system32/msconfig.exe, zip it, and put it someplace you'll remember in-case this or some other thing happens to prevent you from accessing it. (you can copy and paste it to the desktop and run it as administrator if your own msconfig gets corrupted)
Lastly, i'm adding some things to my security, as recommended by Penquingboy, all for firefox:
-disable java plugin
-install addon: flashblock plus
-install addon: adblock plus
Cheers, and Careful browsing to all, and to all a good night!

Use opera and kaspersky pure
Not a single virus/mailware/alienware has entered my pc in the past year.
It takes some time to get used to it, but in the end you its the best. I personally like it cause its fast, stable and has everything that i would ever need in a web browser (Functionality, a damn good simple blocking tool, speed, resource friendly).
Opera is more like that mini coupe car, fast, small and has only the thing it needs.
Fire fox is cool and all, but all its addons that make it more powerful also slow it down.
Opera does have extensions, that are may i add DAMN FAST to install and browser runs fast with a fair number of them.
I only use Youtube download extension (it places a download button near favorite button and when you click it you can chose at which quality do you want to download the video), the you tube Replay button extension, and the image preview extension.

Found it!

Noscript blocks every JavaScript, <object> and external code/cookies by default, which at any time, should you decide you need or want to use, you can right-click and enable it, permanently or temporarily you get the choice.
Also I've been using Avast! antivirus for the last 4/5 years and so far I think it works just fine.
discostu: that noscript sounds cool; i think i'll use it instead of disabling java plugin, thanks.
@mcrich: how are the addons for chrome? (i imagine cuz it's google they should be pretty good) security?
No need for some badly coded plug ins.
As for chrome, its true just as the picture said, fast, nothing else.
The configuration options are a hell to use, it doesnt have most of the things youd find in FireFox or Opera.
Also one more thing, 80% of things that you see in browsers first were invented by Opera.
The popular Firefox add-ons like Adblock Plus, Flashblock and NoScript are very well made, too - they cover far more than Opera's half-assed implementations. Opera has only a tiny share of the browser market, so their plugins are far less mature.
Chrome is okay, but again, the Firefox plugins are much better simply because it's been around for longer. If only Firefox didn't keep breaking add-ons because of their stupid version number thing
Opera having a tiny share of market makes it even more secure, because all those damn 12 year old little hackers wont bother with trying to hack it.
Its a fact that every browser adopts things that opera has originally made.
You cant say its bloated or slow, because it isn't. It uses way less resource than fire fox and it runs way faster with fire fox when you compare it to 1 year usage.
You can not tell me otherwise cause i know that it isn't like that. Im guessing you didnt explore much when it comes to Opera.
What can I say, it just seems to work best for me and as PB said, it works the way you want it to regarding add-ons. Even that image explains it.
"Fairly well-rounded but nearly unusable because of all its stupid add-ons."
Just remove or disable any add-ons you don't actually need and it runs a treat.
Plus on my own experience with all named browsers. I am not a web designer, nor am i a forum administrator. I use my browser for everyday things, and find Opera the most suitable of all.
The latest update is fucking perfect and totally restored my faith. I was very close to switching to Chrome as my primary browser.
Want to see what Firefox will be like in a year's time? Use Opera.
Also Opera had live page development tools long before Firefox, Urby. Inspect specific elements to see how things were done, view/edit Source on the fly, validate code and open your page in any other installed browser all through one context-menu? Lovely.
I use Firefox all the time because it's what's installed on the college computers, and it's just so clunky by comparison, not to mention a total resource hog.
Opera's also without question the best Android browser I've used, and I tried loads.
Currently, i'm using dolphin free version on android and i've no complaints whatsoever.
but then it started updating (without being started up or anything) while I was playing an online game, slowing me to 2 fps.
It is no longer on my computer.
there are other dumb things about chrome but i just can't remember them atm.
