Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
Fun with malware.

I just recently got infected with the Windows 7 Antispyware 2012 virus, and man, they make these things nastier and nastier every time.

i'm pretty sure i contracted the the problem by accidentally clicking an ad banner, and then when avast popped up, i chose the wrong action rather than "open in sandbox" or "cancel opening".

After infection i could not:
-access msconfig
-open anything pined to the taskbar without it poping up and starting a new instance of itself (msv.exe win32)
-open any gadgets or sevendeskbar(dockable toolbar program for win7) without it popping up.
-could not open firefox without it being automatically pinned to the taskbar, for a nefarious reason no doubt.

Thankfully, i could still access the internet and find/download the fixes. I'm just finishing an anti-malwarebytes scan now to make sure it's gone.

I would highly recommend to anyone to copy your windows/system32/msconfig.exe, zip it, and put it someplace you'll remember in-case this or some other thing happens to prevent you from accessing it. (you can copy and paste it to the desktop and run it as administrator if your own msconfig gets corrupted)

Lastly, i'm adding some things to my security, as recommended by Penquingboy, all for firefox:

-disable java plugin
-install addon: flashblock plus
-install addon: adblock plus

Cheers, and Careful browsing to all, and to all a good night!
CT

You need to configure it first to suit you the way you want. I use opera for 4 years now, i used to use firefox.

It takes some time to get used to it, but in the end you its the best. I personally like it cause its fast, stable and has everything that i would ever need in a web browser (Functionality, a damn good simple blocking tool, speed, resource friendly).

does opera have many of the available addons that ff has?
Commented 12 years ago2011-11-25 23:30:53 UTC Comment #55866
Opera is a web broswer not a tank like ff is :D

Opera is more like that mini coupe car, fast, small and has only the thing it needs.
Fire fox is cool and all, but all its addons that make it more powerful also slow it down.

Opera does have extensions, that are may i add DAMN FAST to install and browser runs fast with a fair number of them.

I only use Youtube download extension (it places a download button near favorite button and when you click it you can chose at which quality do you want to download the video), the you tube Replay button extension, and the image preview extension.

[edit]

Found it!

I've recently installed the Adblock Plus and Noscript plugins for Firefox. So far I think they're exactly what I needed.

Noscript blocks every JavaScript, <object> and external code/cookies by default, which at any time, should you decide you need or want to use, you can right-click and enable it, permanently or temporarily you get the choice.

Also I've been using Avast! antivirus for the last 4/5 years and so far I think it works just fine.

Thinking more on this, these kinds of things really piss me off. i mean, i can figure out how to fix it, but my poor mother, she would probaly have to buy a new computer.. argh iwould really like the people who code these things to go away.

discostu: that noscript sounds cool; i think i'll use it instead of disabling java plugin, thanks.

@mcrich: how are the addons for chrome? (i imagine cuz it's google they should be pretty good) security?

You have the exact same, default, built in blocker in opera, that is ultra simple. You just click on what you dont want and it blocks everything that is similar to it.

No need for some badly coded plug ins.

As for chrome, its true just as the picture said, fast, nothing else.
The configuration options are a hell to use, it doesnt have most of the things youd find in FireFox or Opera.

Also one more thing, 80% of things that you see in browsers first were invented by Opera.

Man, you Opera guys never shut the fuck up about your goddamn browser. The problem with Opera is that everything it implements is half-assed, and just adds bloat. Email client, content blocker, a goddamn bittorrent client, and even a full fucking web server! At least with Firefox you can choose which bloat you want to add.

The popular Firefox add-ons like Adblock Plus, Flashblock and NoScript are very well made, too - they cover far more than Opera's half-assed implementations. Opera has only a tiny share of the browser market, so their plugins are far less mature.

Chrome is okay, but again, the Firefox plugins are much better simply because it's been around for longer. If only Firefox didn't keep breaking add-ons because of their stupid version number thing :P

Firefox has Firebug - I'm a web designer - 'nuff said.

Bloat? Opera is the fastest webbrowser i have ever tried on any computer in comparasion, and i did compare a lot.

Opera having a tiny share of market makes it even more secure, because all those damn 12 year old little hackers wont bother with trying to hack it.

Its a fact that every browser adopts things that opera has originally made.

You cant say its bloated or slow, because it isn't. It uses way less resource than fire fox and it runs way faster with fire fox when you compare it to 1 year usage.

You can not tell me otherwise cause i know that it isn't like that. Im guessing you didnt explore much when it comes to Opera.

I used Opera for a couple of years until I started working for QWS. Then I switched to Firefox because of it's web designer features. I recently switched to Chrome at home but now I'm back with FF again.

What can I say, it just seems to work best for me and as PB said, it works the way you want it to regarding add-ons. Even that image explains it.

"Fairly well-rounded but nearly unusable because of all its stupid add-ons."

Just remove or disable any add-ons you don't actually need and it runs a treat.

Well yeah, that stands for every browser, but i was basing what i said on first time/unexperienced users.

Plus on my own experience with all named browsers. I am not a web designer, nor am i a forum administrator. I use my browser for everyday things, and find Opera the most suitable of all.

Firefox is in my experience faster than Chrome when you have many (30+) tabs open. Chrome has a faster JavaScript engine, but unless you're playing a complex JavaScript-based game or doing advanced math calcuations or cryptology in your browser you shouldn't notice that.

I prefer Opera/Chrome for basic browsing. And FF indeed takes the cake when it comes to developing.

Opera occasionally does stupid shit, but they tend to fix it fairly quickly.
The latest update is fucking perfect and totally restored my faith. I was very close to switching to Chrome as my primary browser.

Want to see what Firefox will be like in a year's time? Use Opera.

Also Opera had live page development tools long before Firefox, Urby. Inspect specific elements to see how things were done, view/edit Source on the fly, validate code and open your page in any other installed browser all through one context-menu? Lovely.

I use Firefox all the time because it's what's installed on the college computers, and it's just so clunky by comparison, not to mention a total resource hog.

Opera's also without question the best Android browser I've used, and I tried loads.
Commented 12 years ago2011-11-28 03:22:26 UTC Comment #55856
i liked opera's android browser as well but a couple small things were deal breakers for me, not that i can remember what they were atm. (i'll give it a couple months and try again probably)

Currently, i'm using dolphin free version on android and i've no complaints whatsoever.

I "was" an avid chrome user because it was so fast.

but then it started updating (without being started up or anything) while I was playing an online game, slowing me to 2 fps.

It is no longer on my computer.
Commented 12 years ago2011-11-29 19:30:05 UTC Comment #55857
Hahahah yeah! chrome also likes to make itself your default browser automatically too, when you install something like say google earth. Really dumb.

there are other dumb things about chrome but i just can't remember them atm.

Opera is great and I would definitely use it as my main browser, but... I just simply am completely incapable of getting used to it, I know you can customize it and all, but I just seriously cannot use it efficiently.
