Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman
4 things i resisted using in hammer editor, and now i use them all the time:

Ctrl+e
Centers your 2d views on a selcted object(usually from the 3d view). Irreplaceable on a big/complex map.

QuickHide selected/unselected
Radio buttons next to the visgrouping ones, that temporarily hide selected or unselected objects. Again, great big/complex maps, specifically for quickly sorting out visual clutter in the 3d/orthograpic views, so you can more easily see what you are working on.

Paste Special
Pastes on the direct coordinates of the copied object. Great for reproducing multiple, off-grid stuff you could never otherwise align properly, because it's in-between gridpoints.

Cordon Tool and Cordon Compile
Isoloates an entire area from the editable/viewable area of the map(sort of like QuickHide, but for a whole area, not objects. Great for reducing your compile time for a specific area, and reducing editor lag for a busy map.

On bigger maps I got used to the Cordon Tool. I actually use it more often than vis groups.

me too. i used to visgroup everything, but now much less using cordon. don't get me wrong, i still visgroup lots of stuff, and take advantage of the "auto" visgroups as well.

ctrl E is a staple of my mapping. i never use paste special, when i get into my next mapping spurt i'll have to try utilizing it. the other two i use regularly. Although cordon compiling i had never used until Tetsuo informed me of it. I was compiling whole maps to check out one tiny little change for years...

I've never used ctrl-e, but it sounds useful, so I'll probably try to memorize it and use it frequently. Also never used quickhide, but I only ever paste special and I tend to overuse the cordon tool on my maps because I compulsively playtest and don't want the fact that I haven't finished a room to prevent me from doing lighting passes on it.

I asked dimbark to make a song about the cordon tool after the commercial success of his displacements tribute =)

Paste Special is a great tool for complex, curved geometry. I used it with the clip tool to make this monster tunnel eons ago. It's fun to experiment with.

Omgosh strider, that is so hot!

Nice tools captain, I only really use the hide tool. Never used any of the others, nice to know.

Edit: "plays with paste special" whoa wtf. Why don't we know about these tools.

I use the hide tool to assign the selected brush/ objects to a visgroup and name them. Sort of like layers in most modern modeling programs. Then I can hide and reveal them in the visgroup's window while I work.

u would need goldsource 9000; gold source could never render something that pretty, regardless the r_speeds =]

OR COULD IT?!

Of course it could! Gold Source be hard core.
Too bad after some point, no matter how good the PC is, it will still LAG.
