I'm well aware that you guys have been laughing at me behind my back due to my woefully underpowered system, so I've decided to finally do something about it.
You may remember my previous upgrade - the Nvidia GTX 780 Ti which did extremely
exciting things to my 3D Mark score. As you can see, the overall score was let down considerably by the lacklustre first-generation i7 CPU.
I have remedied the situation with a new motherboard and CPU combo, bringing my score up to a blistering 9898 on Fire Strike - an achievement-unlocking score that is apparently higher than 93% of all worldwide Fire Strike results. Nailed it.
So what has powered this ridiculous score?
The main upgrade is of course the CPU - I went for a
Haswell Intel Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz. It's apparently an overclocker's dream, but the base clock of 4GHz has already blown me away.
Supporting it, I went for the
Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA Z87 motherboard. It's a real beauty and the upgrade from my previous two USB3 slots to seventeen million (I counted) is invaluable to me as someone who works with video.
I had some teething problems after reinstalling Windows, but thankfully everything has been ironed out and this beast of a machine is ready to splatter games all over the walls.
Footnote:
I had planned this purchase for months and saved up significantly and specifically for it, waiting for a drop in the price of these components after meticulously researching them. Don't impulse buy components, you'll miss out on great deals!
More about your inadequacies than your system's.
ba dum tish
At least my first ever laptop is back up and running, the one that has trouble running Half-Life.
Bruce: Megadrive*
TJB: Know them feels. Earning enough to spend money on PC components is something new to me this year.
Pebs: I agree!
Rufee: I thought that initially, but the fact that it's a full metal design and actually helps with cooling & signal shielding - not to mention it looking like a goddamn fighter jet - has won me over.
Stu: It's a very good question. I now have an (okay) i7, a great (albeit outdated) mobo and a very expensive water cooling unit that won't fit the new CPU. That's actually not a bad bundle of kit. A prize for a mapping compo maybe? Would anyone be interested in still perfectly-working kit, despite it being a few years old?
Stojke: Spot on, sir!
Muzzeh: I just about meet the minimum requirements for The Core now.
If computers attracted women as cars do man...
"Haha my girlfriend loves my PC and my car is a piece of shit, so you just gotta find the right girl ^-^"
Hold on to that one...
The computer stuff is nice too.
Shit.
I'm unbelievably jelly right now arch. You planning on overclocking the CPU or just leaving it at a comfy 4 GHz?
Hardware is not my forte.
ahahahahahahha
hahaha
ha
tiny penis.
Screw you, Archie.
