I'm kinda dissapointed after so much people said they'll take part and we end up having just two entries. Even though we've extended the deadline, Dred Furst didn't submit his map, for reasons unknown.

You guys lost the enthusiasm or got tired or something? Was the competition theme not good? Whatever it is, I guess we all need a break. I was hoping someone from IRC would do the juding, since I have to take care of several important projects and wont be home during the upcomming week or so, but people tend to be lazy. So, calling for backup from the forum regulars to check out the maps, I mean, it's just two of them, sure you can spare 15 minutes to write a short review.

In the mean time, make up your minds what you want the next minicompo to be (in case you even want another).

OK, people, as I've been informed, some members have had problems with their entires and they requested that the deadline be extended by one day. So you have some extra time to polish your maps untill midnight GMT on Saturday 12th of May. If you forgot to add something, now is the time.

trigger_multiple in the area where the player has to be standing (usually, right infront of the door, about 32 units from it) target the doors, that have the same name.

You might find this relevant. Read the bit about the wooden door.

Well, I think I'll have to make another post, in order to clarify things, because the terms I used caused much "disturbance" (on IRC, atleast).

I called the red curtain "door", because that's what it is, a func_door. From now on, we'll refer to it as a "window", because that makes it much easier to understand the idea of inaccessibility of the second area.

I don't see how people couldn't understand that from first glance, this will deduct from your score!

Also, glad to see all those entries ^_^

OK, time to have a second one. In the absence of kol, I'll be posting this one, but he's still around, aye?

Engine HL1

Download this base map

You have to extend the map after the large observation window cover called "the_curtain" by adding whatever you want to have behind it. Change whatever you want in the existing section, as long as you keep the general layout.

Other rules:
The new area should not be accessble, i.e., this will be an observation point or whatever you make it. So basicly you have to build scenery in this compo.
Rules of the previous competition apply as well.

You have untill Friday 11th so GET YOUR ARSES MAPPING.

This was very interesting - the only thing bringing it down is the lack of any sound and little bits of rough texturing. It would have been a much better corridor had it been slightly more "polished" and included something dynamic - like scrolling water, or falling rocks, or dust or something. In fact - it was really hard to bump this map from a 3-rd place. -kol

This entry had a lot of potential, but there were a few things that really brought the quality of it down. There was no ambiance to be heard, even though there were torches lining the walls, and there were also little bars of brightness along the bottom of the light beams. These might seem like small things, but it really detracted from the overall quality of the map, which was otherwise well made. There wasn?t much detail to be seen, but the textures were good, and the architecture fit the theme well. I also really liked the triangle-based rocks along one side of the hall. -srry

Summary:
  • brushwork - 4 - I liked the detail in the supports and rock bed
  • textures - 2.5 - themed, but greatly misaligned
  • atmosphere - 2.5 - no ambiance, not even for the burning torches. Also, torches in a corridor with natural lightning LOL?
  • overall - 9 - it had great potential, but the lack of time, or effort, made this one lose lot's of points
Notable items: Good use of textures & geometry, the fire torch lights.
Notably lacking: Sound effects, some alignment issues.

As a few have remarked - a lame attempt at a joke, but you have to admire the explosive climax of this map... and the intricate "detail" courtesy of an 8x8 cube made of 1x1 unit blocks in a checkerboard pattern. -kol

Can't be arsed to write up a long review for this pathetic pile of crap. To sum it up, it's an upside down hallway you walk through, and then there's an explosion that kills you when you touch a door. Absolutely hilarious. -srry
Notably shitty

I loved this one. Although not very complex structurally - the sound is spot on. I liked the flickery floor light + sound touch. This would have been a clearer winner if the hallway was slightly more structurally complex - maybe instead of being completely flat - it could have gone up & down a bit. The screenshot doesn't do the map justice. - kol

This is an undeniably creepy entry. Nice ambient noises and lighting, although the brushwork felt uninspired and blocky to me. In any case, the textures were very well made, and went great with the theme. -srry

Summary:
  • brushwork - 4 - lots of detail, that doesn't actually get in your way, or looks too obvious
  • textures - 4 - close to flawless, very well themed
  • atmosphere - 5 - that one really wind the cake! I actually got shivers on my back since I was paying it in a dark room, with headphones
  • overall - 14 - the name "Silent Hill" easily comes to the mind if you're a fan of the series, although there a bunch of games and movies with such a great atmosphere, without getting too obvious
Notable items: Flickery lights, cool sound effects
Notably lacking: More complex Brushwork.

This is a really superb map. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing, with spinning gears, shaking, and an excellent custom grinding sound to go along with it. Nothing boring about this one. The architecture was generally well made, although I only say generally, because like many of the other entries, it suffered from repetition. The brushwork was copied in places, though even so, it was well constructed. Astounding work. -srry

Daubster's gearbox hallway was only let down by bad lighting - structurally, it's great, with lots of moving gears, great atmospheric sounds and effects. The lighting here really brings this map down. I couldn't even see the moving gears most of the time - would have been nice to light them up red from underneath (yes, i know industrial red lights are cliché - but they still look nice) -kol

Summary:
  • brushwork - 4 - very detailed, I liked all those tiny bits and gears everywhere (infact, too many of them)
  • textures - 4 - they fit the theme, but it was almost too dark to judge them :o
  • atmosphere - 3 - although some might argue with me for giving a too low score, I'd say the ambients where too overwhelming, although fine placed
  • overall - 10.5 - the map just felt like you're inside a huge engine or something that's crashing. Also, that polycount scared me, even for the great detail involved
Notable items: Lots of moving gears, use of special effects like env_shake.
Notably lacking: Lights! Needs better lights!

Pretty good atmosphere coupled with nifty brushwork. I can't really fault anything in this map. Very solid work. The only thing i can think of is the brushwork needs to be a bit "smoother" in places. -kol

This hall was detailed very well, and was one of my favorites. The textures were kind of mismatched, but it made it feel a bit like Blue Shift, to me. The retextured robot model was also put to good use, and I half expected it to come to life and start attacking me. -srry

Summary:
  • brushwork - 3.5 - detailed, but the floor thing and the support being too close shaved off half a point
  • textures - 3.5 - themed
  • atmosphere - 3.5 - ambiance and lighting is fine
  • overall - 9.5 - wow, look at this, so average in all categories. I somehow disliked the whole theme - perhaps too tired of Black Mesa and all sorts of labs.
Notable items: Well detailed, robogrunt prop.
Notably lacking: Better textures, brushwork lacking some "smoothness".

I was obviously referring to the fact the image screwes up the site layout.

Also, about judging the maps... Most of the IRC regulars are entering the compo, so that pretty much leaves me and kol to judge... unless he enters too LOL.

I'm up to it, since it seems most of the members who usually do the map comparing are too busy.

in New Space Shuttle launch schedule Post #185660
Didn't they got tired of this already???

I just heard the news, NASA scheduled a new launch on the 1st of June. I believe a simple calculation would reveal that the "renovation" of the space shuttle has so far costed about as much as a brand new project for a space vessel. Trying to milk something as effective for a space orbiter as a firecracker is VERY stupid indeed.

Discuss.
