Do Australians have commercials for "American Cuisine" featuring fat guys driving land barges and talking in awful mock-redneck accents?

In any case, if the outback existed where I lived, I'd at least make some effort to see parts of it during my lifetime, eh NineTnine?

Does anyone remember a time when story and gameplay were the dominant aspect of gaming?
I don't get why people say this, because just about any decent game these days is going to have a kickass storyline and good gameplay. I think the reason nobody focuses on these aspects anymore is because it's assumed they'll be there. I always read reviews before buying any game, and I haven't been disappointed by story or gameplay in a long time.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think the first person shooter genre is going to improve again for a long long time. Everybody's just going to do the best they can with proven gameplay techniques, because honestly, what more is there? Everybody has non-linear worlds, vehicles, physics, ultra-realistic lighting, compelling stories... the list of old innovations goes on. We're kind of at a creative standstill here. So when a game comes out that isn't revolutionary in some way, I'm not gonna label it as generic. It's just all there is left.

Not that there's any excuse for Halo.

How much fan mail do you think Gabe even gets? I could be wrong, but I don't think a lot of people would even bother sending a personal email the head of a company like Valve. And if they do, it couldn't even be 50-100 per day.

Honestly, that's a horrible excuse, and it's the same excuse everybody uses. Go into any chapter of Office Complex, noclip, and look down on the entire map from above. It's psychodelic. And it explains why you never got visually bored with Half-Life, because Valve CONSTANTLY changed the lighting scheme throughout a map. Even games today get stuck in this bland monochromatic color-coding of certain areas. Don't let it hold you back.

They spend twelve years and boatloads of money "developing" a game that everyone knows is a complete joke, and they're surprised when their publishers finally reach their wit's end? I'm amazed it took this long for them to cut the cord.

"Duke Nukem Forever" has always been synonymous with "vaporware". I doubt if the developers even expected to finish it in their lifetime.

Well as long as you're sure the paperclip made contact, your power supply is definitely dead. When mine died, it wouldn't do anything either.

I hope your computer's fine too, but either way you'll need a new power supply. I'd pick up a decent one somewhere and test it, but I recommend not skimping much. You might want to get a higher wattage one to accommodate future upgrades in case your hardware is fried. After my case-accompanied POS PSU fried my last mobo, I got a nice Rosewill unit I knew wouldn't crap out on me anytime soon. Then again, if you aren't planning on building your next computer, I might not even bother.

The HMMWV is actually over two decades old, and still in service. Well designed equipment can outlive its predicted lifespan and go on to be adapted to situations it wasn't even designed for. I think the U.S. military is typically resistant to drastic changes. They've been playing their game a long time now, and they don't have much reason to improve it unless somebody else steps up to the plate with a better technology that they need to match.

Yeah Mariowned, you don't need to use the 4 pin plug, just cross the green wire with any of the black ones. There is a black one next to the green wire, which will work fine. But there's only one green wire, so you can't really mess that up.

There's a primary cable that plugs directly into the motherboard. It's the biggest one with 20 or 24 pins, you can't exactly miss it. There's a bunch of wires feeding into it, and one of them is green. Bend a paperclip, stick one end in the green wire's terminal, the other in any black wire's terminal, like this:

Very easy.

It should run continuously, if not you've either set it up wrong or your PSU's dead.

Tito, drones use a neat combination of technologies discovered ages ago. It's freakin' RC planes with cameras for crying out loud, I'm surprised it took them this long to perfect such an absurdly generic device. Despite what some Japanese robo-dorks may have you believe, they can't even get these legged gadgets to move around reliably without tipping over. Until there's some massive breakthrough with these things, they'll be consigned to the dreams of engineers. They'd be totally overwhelmed in any real combat situation.

The silly HEV suit thing detailed on the first page is a slightly more realistic goal, but even then you have to contend with the massive problems related to equipment durability. Things that sort of work in a clean lab go kaput in minutes in a dusty field.

So eventually, sure. But in 20 years? ...

It's probably your power supply if the computer is completely non-responsive.

Disconnect the power supply from everything, and looking at the main motherboard power connector, cross the green wire with any black (ground) wire using a paperclip. Plug the power supply in, and turn it on. This turns the power supply on without needing it to be hooked into the motherboard, and will tell you if your power supply is good or not. This trick works on all power supplies, and I personally use it all the time.

If your power supply turns out bad, you may be in for worse than just a cheap replacement. You could have just as easily fried the motherboard and anything connected to it. That's what happened to my last computer, forcing me to upgrade. But I literally had smoke coming up from my case.

in Entities causing Leaks Post #267439
Sorry about that, I was confused about the example in the second sentence, and the first one made it sound like you were making a door into the void. :P

No, that won't cause a leak. Having any brush based entity inside the void won't cause a leak, actually. You can place them anywhere in the map, intersecting anything, and it won't cause problems.
Posted 15 years ago2009-05-24 23:51:01 UTC
in Entities causing Leaks Post #267437
Actually, it doesn't work like that at all. Brush-based entities can't seal leaks, only regular brushes can. So the action of a door opening and closing might visually block your view of the void, but the engine doesn't care either way, because the func_door might as well not be there. That's one of the reasons you don't just build everything out of func_walls.

No offense at all, but you've been here an incredibly long time to be asking a question like this. Longer than me and most of the "old timers" even. Did you take a five year hiatus from mapping?

Does ZHLT 3.3/3.4 have some kind of incompatibility with Windows 98? I'm playing around with this old computer I got my hands on, and whenever I compile with ZHLT, I just get a "could not execute the command" error for each EXE it tries to execute. It works fine when I switch over to the Quake tools, and they're all in the same directory.

It's gonna be way too expensive to outfit every soldier with this crap. If this stuff even exists in 20 years, maybe a few lucky soldiers will get to use it in special situations, but we can't afford this for every guy on the battlefield. In 20 years, you'll still see guys running around getting shot at in regular uniforms like you do now.

As much as I love my DS, competition is always a good thing.
It's debatable, but some say the DS and Wii aren't even in the same market segment as the rest of the consoles. Nintendo's playing a totally different game with their products, and they don't really have much competition for what they're offering. Really, when was the last time you considered Nintendo's current lineup a contender for the "serious gaming" crowd?

If the DS was the only handheld left on the market, quality wouldn't decrease for anything. Nintendo would still be building a great product and developers would simply be competing on a single platform instead of having a hodge-podge of choices. Nobody complained back when the Game Boy was a loner.

Instead they choose to send a lone human into a dangerous compartment wherein they must complete the demanding tasks of pressing a button and pushing a cart ten feet, while exposing them to all matter of multicolored sci-fi lightning effects. It's madness, I tell you.
