I agree women should be able to choose, if for no other reason that it's her body. Late-term abortions are pretty iffy, and should still be banned though imo.

A lot of people feel the way you do, and it's sentiment like this that fueled the minicompos for a while.

While we shouldn't need compos to inspire us to map, they sure focus your attention, which I guess is a good thing.

I don't really know why we don't have sanctioned compos more often... maybe it's a lot of coding on the moderators end? If that's the case, maybe we could find somebody willing to help with that.

...because sometimes Full vis finds errors that Fast and Normal skip over
It's exactly the reverse.

Full VIS "fixes" errors that subsequently aren't shown in the compile log--though it never eliminates the problem. Fast VIS will let errors come through, paticualarly "Leaf Saw" errors that would never show after a Full VIS compile.

Personally, I'd rather know about the errors and eliminate it them ;)

Maybe you have both inputs--your pc speaker and mic--on simultaneously? Type "sndvol32.exe /r" in the RUN thingie to check... [/StabInDark]

Did you try steampowered forums?

This is probably just another example of how Valve can't seem to get the simplest things to work right, even after all this time.

For the longest time, my Server Favourites kept disappearing, and the "buddy list" worked spotily, or not at all--both of which I haven't even bothered with in a long time, since they never worked right for me.

in Hammer compiles wrong map!!! error. Post #196024
Sometimes, when I compile a map--Hammer 3.5--, Hammer compiles ANOTHER map in it's place, with the name of the previously stated map!!

That is, when I go to playtest the newly-compiled map, it's some other map!

The only way I've found to stop this from happening once it occurs, is to delete whichever map is ACTUALLY being compiled, in the Valve Hammer Editormaps directory.

When this happened the first time, I thought it was just some weird filesystem anomaly, but it keeps happening every once in a while--2 or 4 times in a couple months.

Maybe it's a Hammer 3.5 bug, or something in my filesystem is b?rked. One thing I've noticed is the files it happens to have similar names, like the last one:

Map being compiled----example_twisted
Map actually compiled--example_model_shadows

Has this happened to anybody else?!

in fast vis? Post #195902
the lighting and a few other things will come out rather ugly in fast VIS compared to a full VIS compile.
Lots of people say this--which I'm franky kinda tired of--, but I've never noticed much of an impact on lighting, or anything else really except r_speeds, so I decided to do a simple test:

Fast and normal VIS compiles for my example twisted map:

Normal:

Fast:

They look virtually identical to me  If you have a better example to prove me wrong, I'd love to see it :)

Until then, for all but final compiles:

fast vis = ok! (imo)

in fast vis? Post #195896
I don't notice i gigantic difference in lighting between normal and fast VIS, but I know for sure your r_speeds will be super-high! (On fast, VIS spends far less time calculating what you'll be able to see at any given point in the game, so lots of stuff is rendered unecessarily)

There is absolutely no reason to sit through an entire--regular--VIS compile for most stages of a map's construction imo, especially if the map is huge--you'll spend a lot of time waiting!

For the final stages of your map though, it's absolutely essential, so you among other things, get the lowest r_speeds you can.

It won't show up using Alt-P unfortunately. Here are some notes I had written down about this error:
--Warning: Leaf portals saw into leaf
Problem at portal between leaves 708 and 710:
 (-505.000 -660.267 2.000)
(-505.000 -660.267 409.000)
(-628.525 -737.000 409.000)
(-628.525 -737.000 1.610)
(Also should be noted that CSG and BSP ran twice!!!)

Pinpoint the coordiantes to trackdown the problem object(s). I use the brush tool selection box--and make a little box where the coordiates lie--, but whatever way works for you.

Sometimes copy/pasting objects or importing perfectly good prefabs inexplicably causes this. In this case the original object is ok, but a clone of it gives the error for some unknown reason.

Fix: delete/remake, or sometimes copy/cut the object(s), compiling without it, and then hit CTRL-Z to undo (and recompile) fixes it.

Most if not all times, turning the offender into a func_wall eliminates the error too.
Hope helps!

in "invisble one-way wall" problem Post #195717
Everytime I encounter an error these days, I log it and the solution--if I can find it--in a big txt file. Here is my entry on invisible brushes:
--Invisible Brushes: If your running into an invisible brush in the game, and it's nowhere to be found in Hammer, try deleting/redoing all the brushes around that area... should fix the problem.

If they're is any complex architecture close to the problem area, func_wall it, and it should also eliminate the problem.

Another possibility is that you have some brushes visgrouped you forgot about, but this is reaching now :)

Elon says this is caused by a leaf saw into leaf error, which I will have to check out further.

using ZHLT 64 bit tools
Maybe this is the problem. Read below, from zhlt.info:

Most people will want the 32-bit version, if you don't know which one you need, download this one. Even if you have a 64-bit processor (e.g. AMD Athlon 64) you are most probably running 32-bit Windows. If you have a 64-bit processors, and are running Windows 64-bit, download the version for 64-bit processors.
