Yeah, get a basic story down, list of locations for chapters, etc.
Preferably something that incorporates monster_brother into the HL universe as some sort of survivalist group or government soldiers disguised as terrorists to fool the media after the nuke.

Secondly, I think the most interesting mods and especially the hall of fame ones were source mods. So make that banner "Gold&Source"
Or call it "2 Much Gold/Source", pronounced "Too much goldsource". Rolls off the tongue and mind better than "gold and source"
And maybe make the gold... gold. Works well with red.

Dimbark, VM'ing without invalid solids is a simple matter of making sure all your geometry can be reduced to triangles and each individual face is convex.

I mean, that's easier said than done, but once you figure out the trick (I almost have, I think) you can start learning how to do it on a large scale like Archie can.

It's... not really intended to roll that way, but when it lands on it's side, the physics engine does that. Also, Rim, it doesn't roll nearly that quickly, I just didn't have any proper screenrecorder running (Because I didn't anticipate it doing that) so I mashed the screenshot button manually to make the gif.

Your Gameinfo.txt seems to be broken somehow. Did you edit it at some point?
Either way, try verifying the game cache integrity, then if that doesn't fix it, back up your maps, models, materials, and sound folders, etc, then reinstall, and copy those backups back in.
Actually, no. Don't do that. Get someone with CSS to copy the contents of their gameinfo.txt, then blank yours and copy theirs over.

New textures are more complex, because you need to make both the texture and the material, define any shaders the texture should have, etc, but it does give you a lot more options. The new entities are fairly straightforward, and brushwork is even easier than goldsource, because Hammer will remember the dimensions of the last brush you selected, which makes mass-creation of brushes with the same height or thickness much quicker- definitely makes placing walls and floors much faster.

That is a really nice looking map, but I just don't understand why you wouldn't do it on Source, especially since you're using ported HL2 textures. You could be having shaders with those windows.

You should be able to convert it quite easily, assuming you can get Hammer 4 to open a .map or .rmf. I think it should be possible, since it's been done plenty of times. You will have to recompile or replace your models, though.

I'd personally recommend against that. Games that mix violence and children (By which I mean anyone under 18, so teenagers as well) are guaranteed to cause a shitstorm, even more so than someone making 1-1 maps of their school or workplace. It's very likely it could land you in hot water.

As far as I know: (Haven't gotten my hands dirty in the L4D2 Authoring Tools yet)
Custom model skins: Textures yes, if you overwrite the files in the materials folder for your addon. Custom infected models, yes, if you make a new entry for infected populations that includes them.
Update: According to the VDC, custom infected populations are not supported properly with addons, so do that at your own risk.

Survivors start with no weapons: I don't think so, though you could try using a weaponstrip. As far as I know, having the pistol is mandatory unless you replace it with a melee weapon ingame.

Flashlight: No.

Health/Behavior: No.

Level w/o special infected: I beleive there is either a volume or navmesh option that can prohibit special infected from spawning. But you'd have to cover the entire map with it. Or use this.

Again, I don't really know what I'm doing, the above is just speculation combined with what I remember from the documentation on the VDC, so that might all be wrong, and there is some scripting involved in my answers (The infected populations) which some might count as modding. I left it in because there's not really any code involved.

Check your file first to make sure you didn't somehow accidentally make a visgroup of the new area and hide it. If not, then change the file extension of the .rmx to .rmf. Make sure you back up the .rmf first, however, just in case the .rmx is an even older version somehow.

They should be filled in with high quality maps specially chosen by the moderators to gain that specific ID. Or, have the top 10 rated maps be 1-10, and have the rest come in the order they were made.

In all seriousness though, they should either remain blank, or be filled in with whatever map gets uploaded when they're available. I'd want to shift everything over, but that would probably break a lot of links on other sites to TWHL maps.

I'm pretty sure it only logs in to access your game library, otherwise people could just put a bunch of games in the steamapps folder that they don't own, and then play them in offline mode, free and legally.
You can get Steam to remember your account credentials once you've logged on once, you just need to tell it to go offline manually. It does save what you have in your library, AFAIK, so you are probably right that you couldn't play games you don't own. (Never tried this, but I expect they have safeguards)

Everyone I know that uses steam complains about offline mode, but I've never had a problem with it myself. I suppose that might change if I were to actually use online mode for more than downloading, but if you have a laptop or a connection that's not always on, so you know when you're not going to be connected, it's perfectly stable.

I don't think I'm going to get DIII. I never really got into Diablo, and with the DRM and the fact that it's over half-way to an MMO now, I just don't see any reason to get this latest one.

Yeah, Daub basically hit the nail on the head for me as well. I think the only times I ever grind for lives when I really need to. Also, there is the one level in Super Mario World where just a few (literally 3, IIRC) playthroughs can get you to the max of 99 lives through a super-long shell combo. But as long as you don't include something so game-breaking and simultaneously fun, grinding shouldn't be a problem.

If you do end up going with a health system, I hope that healing items will include foodstuffs. For some reason, I prefer them a lot to potions.

I tried burning it to the disk, and it seems to have worked. I'll have to set up the computer before I can get you the specs, as I can't recall them offhand. (It's been years since it was booted) I do have another computer lying around that should be (at least marginally) more powerful, and after a quick HDD swap between the two, I should be able to use that one as well.

Also, I doubt the motherboard supports USB booting. The drive that came with it (not the one I'm using) runs Windows 95, IIRC. My dad got the system for $20 from the office of the construction firm he used to work at before it closed down.

in Installing Ubuntu via ISO Mount Post #305890
Alright, so I've been tossing the idea around in my head for a few days that I could set up a sort of "practice" web server (Ie, not connected to the internet, but otherwise set up) using spare parts around my house and Ubuntu as an OS. I have a decent capacity HDD that I am cleared to wipe and can transplant into a better system when one becomes available (or rather, affordable), and a tower with all needed internal components, CD tray and USB ports (It's old, however, so the USB ports are only on the back) There is currently only one problem; The Ubuntu install ISO is around 750MB, and the highest capacity disks I currently have are only 702MB (Rated at 700). I have an installer for Daemon tools, which means I could mount the ISO on and run it from there, but my question is; Would the mount stay even after I've reformatted the drive, or would the install process be halted (and corrupted) as soon as the process deletes the part of the drive responsible for the virtual CD?

Basically, I need to know if I can install Ubuntu properly by mounting it with daemon, or if I have to actually spend money on this project and get a higher capacity CD to burn the ISO on to.

I don't think CSS content is available to anyone without CSS, (I don't have it installed anywhere, anyway, and I don't see why I wouldn't if I could. Maybe its availability is a more recent update) but it's not like we lack talented/skilled texture artists here that could contribute new environment textures.

I'm liking the setting suggestions so far. It's making it a bit difficult to choose which country to head for, though.

The first thing we really need is to decide on setting; Where and when in relation to the storyline. We do have a 20 year period where nothing much happens in the official canon, so it's basically a blank slate. We just couldn't have the player win too big. Maybe kill a bunch of combine and get away with their life.
POV as a metrocop could work, and it would allow for some form of armor as well. Replace the crowbar with a functioning stunstick, (Electricity included, maybe a "stun" effect that respawns human-sized NPCs after a while when you're in the same VIS area, but that's definitely optional) remesh and reskin the arms somewhat, and get rid of the HEV voice, and that's really all we'd need to sell it.
Perhaps the player is fed up with working under combine rule, and wants to sneak out of the city, where they happen upon some kind of rebel stronghold/shantytown out in the desert/woods/ruins. Again, we need to decide on the setting.

Well, Urby brought up the point that if there's anything we could all agree on, it would be a HL Universe based mod.

I would personally prefer if it was made with the SDK base stuff, because if we were to base it off Ep2, I wouldn't be able to play the finished product, or test stuff without a bunch of checkerboards or red errors flying around. But that's just me and my lack of bandwidth.

I also think that if we do end up doing a HL Universe mod, we should keep the hell away from City 17, because practically every HL2/Ep1/Ep2 mod takes place there. I realize the content available makes it easier than, say, London, for instance, but City 17 and the surrounding area (Eastern Europe) has been done to death. I think it would be better to pick another city elsewhere in the world to blow up and occupy with combine forces.
