God I hope so. All the subtle signs point to it being a joke, but there's this nagging voice in the back of my head telling me bad things. D:
ridiculous music in videos, ridiculous dialogue
Don't know about that (no sound at work), but I read it's very... hillbilly.
day time maps
Don't have a problem with that though.

Not liking this much at all. The new locations and new weapons sound appealing (minus the frying pan), but the rest just seems off. The Charger looks ridiculous and the only new survivor that fits the Left 4 Dead theme is that con artist.

It's like Valve handed it to an amateur company and told them to go nuts.

Please be a joke leading up to new DLC and Episode 3, pleeeeease.

Valve announce Ep3 for this year
My bet's on early next year, but we'll get info and a nice juicy trailer.

What I want:
  • New Zelda in the same style as Wind Waker
  • Beyond Good & Evil 2 details, full-length trailer
  • Anything on Uncharted 2

Total Recall is hilarious. I love seeing all those old films and how way-off they are with their science.

There's too many problems with the third Terminator film to list. John Connor turned into a pussy, the Terminator himself (itself?) turned into a walking gag-reel... etc. etc.

Far Cry 2 is basically FPS GTA: Africa, and while even though I'm bored with that style of gameplay in general, to me it ranks much higher than Fallout 3's boring, glitch-ridden excuse for gameplay.

Otherwise I completely agree with WorldCrafter. Racing games are dull and uninventive. My brother had like 6 NFS games and a few other racers on his 360 (it bricked, he traded his games in), I couldn't understand why as they all played the same.

Seeing the whole thing in it's finished state is crazy, yes. Once you learn all the basics (particularly all the optimization brushes) and see your own map slowly come together bit by bit though, it's not so bad.

In the standards map there's a bunch of entities stuffed in the corner of the starting room. They all control the basic outdoor lighting, the fog, the colour correction for each team, shadows... things like that. I'd suggest just copying them and playing with their settings to begin with.

The TWHL hldm server is down.
Irrelevant, was only around for a small amount of TWHL's entire life.
Competitions are heald rarely and when held, dude date is not strict and judgement takes a lifetime.
True enough, being sorted out.
All of the good mappers have been either lazy or too busy with life to make some good maps, but whats the point of making a good dm map when no one will play them. Sart the server back up, set up a payment plan, make it happen!
See reply #1.
THE RATING SYSTEM NEEDS 10 STARS NOT 5 STARS MAKE IT HAPPEN ! ! ! ! ! !
This is the only reason I almost never rate maps.
What.
The moderators need to be active, rewarding, encouraging, and mappers themselves. Get mappin! No offence, I just don't think you should judge a competition without experience, in fact I know you shouldn't!
I map, but that's a damn bad argument regardless. Reviewers make a living off doing the very same thing, but we do it for you and don't get paid. You're still bitter over that compo but you're the only one who cares, it must be said. Give reviewers credit where credit's due.

Now I'm going to do a Penguinboy here and lock this thread because it annoys the hell out of me. Thank you for your time and goodnight.

Say what you want, but the Huntsman looks awesome to me. Also, what map is that behind him?
Any experienced sniper will tell you how irritating it is when your targets keep moving around. The question is how to stop these cheaters from wind-sprinting around like they own the place. And the answer is to pin them to a wall. How? With arrows!
And even if you don't kill them, they'll carry around a certain arrow-shaped something as a living testament to your awesome archery skills and their frankly unawesome dodging skills.
To me it just sounds like the killing shot will pin them to the wall, like Half-Life 2's crossbow.

But as a trade-off you need to be much more particular about the lighting. Because modding communities such as TWHL are quite critical when it comes to lighting.
I was writing an advanced lighting tutorial to rectify this. Laziness kind of took over. I have a whole bunch of the lighting/colour theory done, so I should probably release that in the meantime.

This thread is becoming increasingly awesome.
Strider started to delete my shoutbox comments and that kind of kiddy retarded behaviour was something I wasn't going to have. Little jelous kids taking over the site was probably the start of its downfall.
I have to say, I simply love how you come back to imply I'm like a little kid, but also proceed to call me retarded. Bravo, excellent work.

For the record, I deleted one comment because that particular 'arguement' was done and dusted. I told everyone to stop because opinions are opinions.
About the media for The Citizen Part 2, wait to play the mod until you have anything to say about its quality. And once you've played it, wait and make your own better HL2 mod to have any authority to criticize.
Reminds me of the time you said that simply because you think it's better than most of the maps in the mapvault, it deserved a higher rating. The point wasn't to compare your work with others, it was to critique your work. A point you still seem to fail to realise this far on. I happen to share the opinion that the media is unimpressive, and you can't take away my opinion. And about that "You do better!" bullshit, just.. haha, Urby nailed it.
or is someone snitching for you?

Lesse here... Realistic physics? Check. Realistic lighting and water? Check. Characters and textures that look fairly like they're in real life? Check.
No no no, let me explain. All those things were pretty technically impressive years ago, yes, but Valve's purpose with Half-Life 2 wasn't to look cutting-edge. They actually considered dropping bump-mapping during it's development. Valve use the Source engine's visuals only to compliment their storytelling and gameplay. It's a stylistically good looking engine, not a realistically good looking one.

Their implementation of rim and phong lighting doesn't look particularly realistic, but it still looks damn nice, because it's stylish. You only need to listen to their commentary to learn their game goals, they value solid gameplay and style over realisim.

Point is, Source is the next step from GoldSource, it makes sense to move onto it. It's familiar, but powerful enough to open up a whole bunch of new possibilities, and it's definitely not hard to learn.

Err, the point of Source is hardly realism. It is, by far, not the best looking engine out there.

I could argue that the point of moving to Source these days is because it's easier to get your work noticed, way more versatile, widely supported... the list goes on.

I try to check up on #twhl3 every once in a while but I'm always banned. That's a heck of a grudge, guys.
You weren't wanted and we've since just given up. We simply don't care enough to bother with you, move on. Srry had literally just reminded me of you in this thread.
I'll tell you why #twhl3 is all Aussies: It's because you all banded together against everyone else. Pretty much, Strideh, Penguinboy and Ant along with their assman Trapt got pissed off at me so bad that they ragequit their own channel just to form a channel that I could not go in then got pissed at all the people who wanted to be in my channel, thus alienating them.
Wrong. We'd had it with you and only you. We never went against anyone else. We wanted a new room for the new TWHL and it was a pretty fitting reason to be done with you, too. People were free at the time to go wherever they wanted.
I liked the site AND the channel, but when they came under Aussie-posse authority, no one else had a chance because the mods were more like a clique than internet civil servants.
Had no chance to do what? Join our new site? Our new channel? What did we come down on (besides you)? We've actually learned to be LESS LENIENT since the unveiling of TWHL3 because of an influx of abusive trolls from not actually enforcing our updated rules.

Maybe we are a clique. Pb, Ant and I shared an interest in trying to bring in a newer TWHL focused on a tighter, friendlier community. But no, according to you, god forbid community leaders try to roll in any kind of guidelines.
Please let me back in #twhl3 I will be good.
See my first reply.
Also, I would say this site is less active than before. Not so much in users, but more in activity itself. I told Strideh and Ant thousand times before, we need to focus on Source more - but they never come further than promises. And yes, I'm aware you guys have busy lives - but lots of people, including myself, have voluterend (spelling!?) to help anyways.
Yes, well we're trying again and hoping to do it better. For a first site I think Pb and Ant did pretty darn well, even if it was incomplete during it's release.

I'm basically only online to check and moderate TWHL, I don't do much in the way of looking for news beyond core Valve products, and it's hard to promote Source on a site so central to GoldSource. Maybe it's time we got more people to take care of that?

Yeah, I don't really map any more, I just come here for the community and to goof off. It's never been a really busy site, although before the TWHL3 revision it got pretty damn crowded at times. There were a lot more interesting members back then in my opinion. I also think there may be too many new members that came here at once. Used to be there were a few new members at a time, but to even it out there were a LOT of people that knew their shit about mapping... not so much any more. I don't see the same kind of awesome creativity any more either.
Pretty much why we need much more Source support, and believe me it's coming. New members are less reluctant to pick up GoldSource when there's something newer and more opportunistic in it's place. Most people who still map for Half-Life are fans and modders from way back. Things age.
Oh, and #twhl3 is pathetic. Nothing ever happens there. The decision to abandon #twhl was one of the worst moves ever for this site as far as I'm concerned. It's dead every time I log on, and Nickelplate was like the only person who made #twhl interesting in the first place. Now he's on #failreactor, so I just go there like twice a month.
Hence, "more people should check up on it every once in a while"? And please don't mention Nickeplate, the guy's a dick.

What Penguinboy said.

Rabid moved on from TWHL a long time ago, though we still see him in #twhl3 occasionally. Ant doesn't hang around TWHL anymore, but you'll still see him in #twhl3 a lot. And yeah, Grim and Daubster still kick around, and Penguinboy and I aren't leaving anytime soon.

#twhl3 is an extension of this site, more people should check up on it every once in a while. As ZombieLoffe pointed out recently, it's mostly just us aussies in there.

Otherwise there's still plenty of regulars, Source and Goldsource users, too. TWHL is active enough. Like any site though, older regulars will sometimes move on and new regulars will come in.

I and many, many, many others would never accept that. I want, where possible, a disc copy of every game I own.

You're also forgetting that internet speeds across the world are all over the damn place, having to stream everything would be absolute hell for some people. This new OnLive device more than likely isn't going to do so well for the very same reason. Not to mention there's quota concerns, too.

Our own government is trying to roll out a new high-speed internet service for 90% of the country and it has an 8 year development time, and you could probably add many more years to that until we have acceptable prices and plans.

The idea of streaming everything is just too damn ridiculous right now or in a decade. Just because it's streaming doesn't mean it can't be copied either, there are many programs designed to pick up streamed video or information, and it would only be a matter of time until new streaming methods get their own.
