Yes but that is the expensive method.
Btw, after 3 hours of vvis.exe, I decided to stop the process. I found out that I've left a torus-like shape a world brush instead of making it func_detail in open space.

Info from http://www.slackiller.com/tommy14/errors.htm#numplanes:
Before you go wild, try a recompile or 2 - sometimes it is just a random thing. Also search for a brush with more than 32 faces, such as a cylinder in the Maxpoints error.
Otherwise this error means you went over the limit of the number of planes allowed. This means too many faces in the map = too many brushes, or too complex ones. Time to trim back the level map! Some solutions:
Do not put a box around your map to fight leaks. Seal each section seperately and fight the leak war.
Try to line up the faces of brushes with the same texture at the same scale. Then the engine may make them into one face plane.
Avoid detail brushes, use texture to "fake it" instead.
Plain make fewer brushes. Keep construction simple. HL and complexity mix poorly.
There are some newer compiler programs being tested that remove unused and unneeded planes from the outside of a level. You could try to get and use one of them.

Seems quite an interesting story for a mod. But these lines seemed a bit odd:
The player is then told that they added power to him so they could win any war and America could threaten any country they want, forming the world into total masonry.
I think you're getting too much into specifics for such a mod, if you understand what I mean.

I, at least, approve this project. But remember that I haven't seen anything conclusive from you yet( you had mod ideas in the past).

This could really be a genuine game, because if the levels are done after the story, you'd have specific chapters. Which, imo, is good!

Good luck with this, and if you make any progress, don't forget to register your mod on moddb ;).

vrad.exe halts at 0% Cpu yet again. I can not blame anymore my steam installation, or perform a windows reinstall. I've already done this in the past and it was the same. After some point of complexity vrad or sometimes even vvis simply refuses to compile. Source was optimized from the start for outdoor maps( in opposition with goldsource), and my map isn't even messy at this point.

This is annoying and makes me stop wanting to participate in this competition and secret santa :(.

I'll see what I can do.

I'm also gonna complain that vrad.exe still halts, with 0% CPU consumption. What the fuck is happening, I don't even have errors in the map!
This is why mapping for this fucking engine looses interest gradually for me, even though I'm willing to map! :x

Great, although the 2D views are fixed now, the water has a pink-black checkered look. And there's no 3D texture shaded polygons- it doesn't work.

Oh, and disabling VGUI browser for the props doesn't work- it still crashes!

I can't map with these ugly views. Sure, it offers me the basic functionality, but I can't clearly see lines, it's hard to position new elements, and I have to guess if the clipping tool will work the way I want to.
Also, the water is black and every sprite is black.

But now, now that Dimbark, possibly the second lowest respected member on the site just simply posts posts that he's 'having problems with hammer', suddenly everybody rolls over and just believes that the sourcesdk is actually broken? Seriously, what the fuck.
Source SDK is actually broken.
I am seriously growing tired of this, it was fun at first watching how everybody felt entitled and glorious that it's perfectly okay to just dump on me for no reason, but it's when Aaron posted something that defended me everybody suddenly stopped bashing and my 'idiotic', 'moronic' 'bullshit' argument was suddenly a completely valid one to everybody?
I agreed with your point of just stating the facts before aaron posted, I was late posting so what has been left for me to say was "I agree with aaron that...".
Man, shut the hell up. Nobody cares.
I care. We should all care. I'm not being sentimental here :glad:

[EDIT] Omg, Hammer got fucked up. The 2D views are black, sprite icons are black and I can't construct anything.

Bye bye Compo 31 :(.

[EDIT2] All I could found until now about this is a warning on the Valve Wiki saying
WARNING: THE OCTOBER 13TH UPDATE TO THE SOURCE SDK HAS BROKEN HAMMER. PLEASE AVOID UPDATING IF YOU CAN.
I hate not being able to find what the heck is this update about.

[EDIT3] I found a temporary very ugly fix on the Steam forums:
First, set your 3D camera to 3D Shaded Textured Polygons to display the 3D View.

Then go in Tools/Options :
First click on the General Tab, and Uncheck USE VGUI Model Browser (it crashes hammer)
Click on the 2D Views TAB, and on the left Side, uncheck the "White-on-Black color scheme".

It will display the viewports in inverted color modes, it is pretty ugly but at least it displays the objects in the viewports and allows you to manipulate them and to work if you are in a hurry.
You know... the fact that nobody seemed to be bothered about this and the first was me, a lazy mapper, tells a lot of the activity of this mapping community. You guys are working really hard on that compo.

In this case your post was useful. Why? It serves as a comparison of how much space the blank part takes, compared to my post where most of the space was exploited usefully. (and this post occupies a bit too much space too!)

I'm going to make a practical suggestion: It bothers me to read threads that are mostly composed of short answers, or pages of threads with short answers.

If someone's post is less than 2 complete lines you( Penguinboy or Ant or whoever has access to the site's code) should make that post more compact(occupy less space). If a person doesn't have much to say, it shouldn't take a lot of blank space for nothing.

I realize this can destroy the thread symmetry( and avatars will disappear in short posts, or be of smaller size), and if it's such a big problem, perhaps you have some other advice?

You can't make such a perfect tunnel curve manually. I mean, look at the polygons. They get larger and larger as they reach the outer curve. You have to use a torus for such a thing.
From the image it seems that the tunnel is mostly constructed using the arch tool, and then for the curve a torus is used.

These images are from a mod I recommend you playing, it's a fair amount of time (I think I played about half an hour): Joutooma(Hl2:Ep2 mod).

The movement in the maps is somewhat similar to Shattered Horizon.

Not everyone. I suggested a bridge :D.
Why are you investing in garbage when you could save a bit more money and get a decent camera. It can be a bridge or even an older DSLR like Nikon D40.
Although I recommend you get a bridge. Really nice bridges are around 500$, but you can get decent ones at about 300$.
Have you seen my photos? They're all made with a Nikon P100. The single most annoying thing is that you get the small sensor, 1/2.3 inch, so the resolution isn't as good as DSLRs, but you have very high flexibility.

So in short, fuck Minolta lenses. Buying a Minolta lens and then realizing you have to buy a Minolta along with all it's accessories is like buying a old mouse and finding out you have to buy a Apple II and all it's proprietary shit.
I don't quite realize why you are now trying really hard to get into photography, but you bought a video camera.
Although, after some digging I've found ONE dirt cheap Minolta body for 15$. That's barely more then what the lens cost so fuck it, I'll get that.
Ah common... Why are you investing in garbage when you could save a bit more money and get a decent camera. It can be a bridge or even an older DSLR like Nikon D40.
