Nice to see you have a big entry, I was getting pretty upset lately since I realised it would of been better to just create a g-man like dream sequence rather than one with game play.

I have two maps so far, and will make a short final one, both of these maps are pretty big though. Plus I had already finished both a couple of times, only to come back and improve them more and more every time I get a new idea, I've even remade both a couple of times :\.

-Sorry for the irrelevant comment.

IngSoc I like the simplicity of your map, Nowadays most mappers go for new shiney textures and weird complicated brushwork where as you've kept it simple and very much resembling to how valve themselves made their maps. This isn't always a good thing, but in your case it is.

Generally 'n00bs' just create a non solid brush and don't even care about properly setting the opacity of the texture, therefore they couldn't care less about what's under the water.

Good to see you aren't one of those joe.
You don't really know what your talking about do you? A simple water brush face not tied to an entity acts as a water brush and a VIS blocker at the same time, A method like this gives good mappers the opportunity to create large underwater areas without sacrificing r_speeds, A non-opacity water brush has nothing to do with noobness.

Doesn't look like the kind of place you'd expect a bunch of trees in, but I could be very wrong! Good luck with it!

Edit: You should probably add some trees on top or behind the cliffs for a better feel too. That is if you already weren't planning to.

The CS mapvault here has a lot of such maps, I'm not sure if there are any good ones for hl1 though. The advice I can give you is use models for the trees, they are better than brushes on a r_speed basis and they just look plain better.

I'd like to ask this to the judges:

Will our maps be judged only based on their "dreamyness" or will they receive overall reviews, giving us scores on things like brushwork, lighting, ambience as well as the "dreamyness".

^ True that, But by no means it will give him a better rating than upgraded lighting. Sure It's a dream so It doesn't require realistic lighting, but what stops him from "dreaming" better lighting and hence upgrading his current one for more ratings?

Edit: My maps are going to be shorter than planned, (They're still big however.) Since I am going on a holiday on the 22nd for two weeks. I have some pressure on me, since I haven't finished the major tweaking for my second map (which took around 5 days for my first map). I'll try to finish it within these 3 days and tweak it for the remaining 5 when I get back. I'm satisfied with the results of my map however. I've had doubts if it's dreamy enough, but I hope the random changes of environment and the unlisted stuff is good enough.

perhaps you can create a code and then bind a key to it, which acts as an env_fade for the greenness and in console increases brightness and when turned off decreases it.

Ok so another question in my thread of random questions (this should be renamed to skalses thread of random questions ;D)

How do I get media to be played in my map? If it involves coding tell me how to do it, I'm trying to get these for my compo maps and have them in a mod format so I wont be replacing anything.

Well depends on how you want to use it - If you want only the effect without the player having control over it, you can simply add an env_fade with the modulate flag and a light green colour (you can change the fade colour to anything you want). It will create the light green effect but You wont be able to use key commands to toggle it, only in hammer triggers. Another way would be coding ofc, though I'm not sure how to do that.

You have to pay to use and publish using the UDK. Plus it's alot more complicated than hammer. You won't be able to pull it off with "amature developers", but good luck.
