Indeed they are smooth they look like something to eat =)

JoeBAMba: 'tis looking pimp sir. WE TRUE HOMIE.

Still working to improve de_747, hoping to upload it to the vault in a couple days if i hit no major snags, but i'm not releasing it 'till it's "done". =)

Optimization: DONE
3dskybox: 90%
Brushwork: 95%
Lighting: 50%
Custom textures: 05% ='(
Clipping: 80%

Improved mostly the 3dsky and outside areas of the map, added detail, and major optimization improvements to fps. (i may use fog_controller to increase it more, but right now it plays very smooth on my computer at 60-80 fps)

in Mapping help. jaggy map Post #303988
Ok, a couple general rules to start out with after looking at your map quick.

1. Any brush not sealing off the world that is somehting other than a normal cube or wedge should be made into a brush-based enitity, e.g., func_wall, func_illusionary.

For example, the castle walls should be world brushes and left as plain rectangles, and the "teeth on top could all together be made into one func_wall.

You're doing this to make it easier for the compiler to calculate the visible space for players. Little detail and any complex things should be func_wall.

Big simple shapes should be left as world brushes, because they block visibilty, or that is to say they separate one area from the next, so the engine does't have to render too much a stuff to the player at any given time. (if you can see the whole map at once the engine has to work really hard, and you get low fps)

For more information on how visibility process, google "binary space partion" and/or "half-life, goldsource optimization"

2. Texture Scales: All textures should be scaled to 1.00, but you can go a little lower or higher to fit something special, or if it's only a few things. Example:

Your castle is scaled to 2.50 x 2.50. By and large, textures are meant to be scaled to 1.00 in order to look correct. Again, you can vary a little if you need from time to time, but never go below .50, and i wouldn't recommend going higher than 2.00 until you learn more.

I still can make it break though
Well ya, of couse it u twist or shift the brushes insied-out. It's Pretty failsafe within reason.

95% of the time though, ou can handle complex stuff wit normal brushes, which is good becaue objects built ebtirely from pyramids is veey inefficient, and can cause other problems if u abuse them ;)

Now you tell me! =P

I have noticed a BIG performance hit since my last version, when i started proppering like a banshee. Couldn't figure it out since i thought i was saving on fps by trading brushes for models..

Well crap that really sucks, but a least now i know.. I'm at like 95% brush sides so i can't add too much more brush detail, and performancely, definitely can't afford to spend more, so i guess that is pretty much it for this map.

Poop. Poop mouth! ='(

In that case you have to use brushwork made entirely out of tetragons or "triangles" as many people say. A quick example.

use hlfix to "fix" this. Compilator makes it very easy to use hlfix, if you have trouble setting it up.

As an alternative, you can also try Vlcuzan's floating-point Enabler. I've never tried it but i hear good things.

Well i'm about to test it jeff i'll let you know what happened. I made each building it's own propper model, but i unfortunatelly left the texture scale at .0625, so we'll see...

i'm fairly interested to see if they light better/worse than the brushwork equivalents..

Mainly though, i want to see if my Brushsides goes down, which are at 95% right now :P

Ya that would be really nice. For that reason, i would not take the time to add new wads to hammer, i'd instead just WADmerge(using Wally) it into a bulk "captain_terror" wad, and just keep that one in hammer. (I use -wadinclude, so i never had to worry about distributing that beast. =))

I'm currently Proppering lots of stuff in my map, and i was wondering if i should bother Proppering stuff in the 3dsky box?

I have around 200 eligible brushes in there i could make into Propper models, but my question is: is it worth it?

Because the 3dsky is rendered so cheaply, is it waste of time to make that stuff into models, OR could it even be a net loss performance wise?

in Hammer clip tool sucks? Post #303862
Source clipping seems to be a little more forgiving than goldsource(i clip bat-shit crazy in source, way worse than i ever tried in gs), with the one exception that sometitmes it produces teeny-tiny off-grid parts, if you are clipping a brush reeeely long and pointy. (i usually fix by just cutting the brush in half so the "pointy" or hypotenuse part of the triangle isn't so extremely big, if that makes any sense)

in Hammer clip tool sucks? Post #303858
I remember being warned about clipping when i first started mapping, so for the first couple years probably i almost never used clip because i was scart to cause errors. Then eventually at some point, i must have said fuck it and started using it; now i use it constantly, with no problems at all.

Maybe it's never been an issue for me because I've always used HLfix?

Idk, i clip like it's my job and almost never get clipping errors... (that's routinely clipping and scaling complex objects, sometimes multiple times, i.e., clip, scale, clip, scale-scale, clip again, etc) :P

make sure your hlfix is setup properly and running. (problems with this usually are caused by having an incorrect wad.txt file)

Link to your rmf, and i'll take a look at it if you like. One thing I know, using CTRL-M to roatate very complex objects will automatically make them invalid solids.

There is nothing wrong with the clip tool and it is probably one of the more powerful tools in Hammer. Make sure you have "snap to grid" selected and you are on grid points when you clip.

Ya like maybe toggleable instead, though block the player from hitting it again, essentially making it behave as if the delay reset was -1?

Maybe tell exactly what you are trying to do and i might have some suggestions without using the button.

I love entity riddles they are SO MUCH FUN. Maybe we could make a mini contest where you have like 10 entity problems to solve, getting harder as you go along? (Sounds a like school but much funner)

1. you filled up the entire useable square footage with brushes right there by itself is a bad idea, and i'd recommend keeping your brushwork 1024 units away from the edges of the usable space in hammer.

2. they are all world brushes. anything brush that is not a normal square or rectagle, is not a visblocking object, or does not seal off the world make it func_wall or func_detail. Especailly any object that is vm'd or has more than 3-4 sides.

Wow gorgeous pics sir! The second one made my jaw drop. :o

The only way i can think of would be to make the windows opaque world brushes. Have you experimented with hints at all? (i've never been able to make them work)

3500 for a map of this size/complexity is no that bad. I think you can also boost wpoly by reducing texture scale? If so, it's just another trade-off: wpoly for prettiness.

It might be a fun to host a mini-mapping-competition out of this map or another one with tough optimization, and see who could get the wpoly down the lowest? =)

Print it up on black vinyl, and make a pretty lightbox for it and voila! Super sexy wall dressing <=

Or, just use a nice lcd painting. (the obvious advantage of the lightbox is it being wayyyyyy cheaper)

edit. i think i'm totally gonna do this. we getting some vinyl printed up at work pretty soon for work, i'll just include it in the order. Only other thing is to decide how big to make it, but i guess i'll just go shopping for light fixtures to get an idea, PLUS it will make a perfect fit for the light box.

Come to think of it you could also print it light reactive, and den just uplight(outside, no box) with a small-tubed, singleblacklight. hmmm wonder which way'd be beter-looking, i.e., which method would pop more....
