It's not like it's something new: see the mw2 map package.
Companies become more and more greedy and try to squeeze every last possible drop of money they can do from shitty things like this. Or selling so called "skins" and models...
At first, most people laughed at this. But it has become a reality.

Also, it's a gas, making it harder to handle.
Knowing the fact that it's lighter than air, you can manage the handling pretty well... Umm, at least in small home experiments :D

Another possible future fuel, besides hydrogen, is methanol. But it's highly toxic because of the way it is decomposed in our body, so it's not a viable solution.

Well, today(ehm, yestarday, 12:04 now :D) I filmed it. Again, wasn't what I expected, I was left a bit dissappointed. I tried to lift balloons into air but it seems those balloons were just too small.
Oh well, maybe another time I'll buy bigger ones and do it again on a greater scale in my grandmother's backyard.
I still made the balloon explode though.

So here's the video posted on my blog.

Ok, let me give you some extremely objective hindsight.

Once upon a midnight dreary there was a mod named 6D. It had Daubster, TWHL's top programmer, myself on all graphics and mapping, and Grim on the music. Together we were the legion of doom making things awesome. Daubster hit a bunch of snags coding telekinetics and basic physics into HL, ultimately things were far too tricky given the HL code is a pain in the ass in some parts of it. The HL code is balanced very delicately and messing with it, well, if you have played Flat-Life you've probably experienced some nasty glitches and crashes. Myself doing models, I couldn't get new grunt models or scientists working. It was also difficult to map with incomplete code. After 2.5 years, the project fell apart outright and was discontinued. If we couldn't get the simple things working, how are you going to get all of those complicated source things in goldsource.
I see where this is going. I never imagined people being that arrogant. So are you afraid that he will succeed? Will it be a pain in your ass if he succeeds and the mighty creators of 6D failed?

I understand that you first advise him not to do so, but if he doesn't accept that advise and he is very decided then you should encourage him. Fail\Success, you don't know. But you all start a flame war because you are afraid of such a success.
I wish I wouldn't use too much the 'if' word :D.

It would be pretty practical and home-made. Get a cheap camcorder with night mode, some infra-red diodes, some other easily obtainable items, stick them together on a headstrap and you've got yourself some night-vision goggles.
Oh, then you mean something like this?

Yesterday I discovered a faster, simpler way of producing hydrogen without all that electrolysis hustle. I hope I can get my hands on some NaOH tomorrow, because NaOH+H2O+Al=> lots of heat and H2 and other substances that are hard to write(something like NaAl(OH) but I may be wrong). I just put them in a bottle, then cover the bottle with a balloon! How cool is that?

[EDIT] Well, I was at my grandmother today and I found out she had some old NaOH from some time ago when she made soap. It was nearly rock solid, so I could only scratch some NaOH from that rock. I didn't make the above experiment(I plan on doing it tomorrow), instead I made something... "bombastic".

So this is what I did: Placed NaOH in a 0,5l glass bottle half-filled with warm water, then quickly added some aluminium foil. Shaked the bottle a little bit and the reaction started immediately. It started making a lot of H2 and foam, but it wasn't sufficient for what I wanted(I placed only a small quantity of NaOH)- a continuous flame coming from the mouth of the bottle.
So instead I placed a cover on the bottle's mouth- hydrogen built up inside. After about 1 minute, I took the cover and came near with a match.

I wasn't expecting that: it exploded into a flame about 20 cm high(the flame could be seen even inside the bottle) with a loud bang. It really scared the shit out of me, and I wonder what would've happened if I let the hydrogen build more in quantity... I really feel lucky that bottle didn't explode.

So anyway, tomorrow I'm going to buy some balloons :D and fill them with hydrogen.

I also expect that your target audience is near zero.
But if the mod does finish(even if only a few maps are released), a good part of half-life mappers and nostalgics WILL SURELY play this.
You are taking a new game, coating it in rust, and trying to pass it off as something good.

Who doesn't like science?
Boooooo, get out of here we hate science!
Awww, come on, a little bit? A little little little little little bit? :crowbar:

I'd like to discuss about, well, experiments in this thread. Give ideas! Have you ever made something cool? Post the story here!
I'm really bored sometimes, and if we could share ideas on this subject I'd be happy. Please don't come up with suggestions as making a teleporter. Let's stay in the boundaries of practical, possible, home-made experiments.

Some time ago I posted this video about making oxygen. I want to use the same method, but with a little more complex apparatus to separate the liquid(water) into 2 containers(plastic bottles). One will represent the anode(hydrogenbubbling) and one the cathode(releasing oxygen). I'm mainly interested in hydrogen now, I want to collect in a plastic bag or balloon :).
I also discovered a weird, but fun, way to make KNO3(potassium nitrate). It's a medieval method. Smelly one I guess :D, as it involves animal waste. But I'd do it our of curiosity. KNO3 combined with sugar is an excellent rocket fuel(actually I wouldn't do this, but KNO3 is very hard to find).

A project like this isn't possible because others failed miserably. It is very possible, and whoever created that "recruitment sheet" has at least good knowledge about working in a team.
The only problem is the support- everybody shouts negative comments.

But I bet that if a project like this would release a few maps demo, everyone would try it.

Doesn't work

Doesn't work
@Zeeba
Science is everywhere. Question anything, get some results(knowledge) and you have science. You can get ridiculous this way though, like for example, explaining how a ball pen can write on paper.

Here's an ideea: map an electric generator map(being a science themed map it has to be dynamic to show how different components work).
Or, map the a car engine(although this could be difficult).
Map a chemical reaction(that's something I'm after if science wins).
Map the journey of a Voyager 2 and the sadness of loosing contact with Earth by 2025.
Map a detailed bomb explosion. Showcasing in a scientific way how an explosion happens.
Map a Supernova.
Map the digestion of food :D.
Map something related to the LHC.

The list goes on, it's just about imagination, and it doesn't have to be extremely scientific. It's just about making it look like science.

Map a science themed map. This could be anything that relates to science really(even SCI-FI, but I discourage this, make it real ;) ). For example... map a science experiment, map a scientific area etc...
There are plenty of ideas that you can get from channels like National Geographic, Discovery or science magazines, even Wikipedia if you know what to search for.
