It's cold up here in CT, USA (been around 20deg F for the past week) But I'm heading north pretty soon on a Snowboarding trip for 5 days. I'm gonna be freezing my ass of on a ski lift for 5 whole days- can't wait. Seriously :)

Hate to break up this topic, but i nuked my map. It's dead.
Reasons:
Too linear
Too dark
Theme got boring
I didnt know how to fix it

So i started a brand new map. It's huge. But there's a lot of different pathways and such. Italy themed...

Changed the layout due to extra long hallways. And once the props were added, it skewed the balance for a terrorist advantage (108 to 490 [Playtested overnight])

This is the modified hallway.

Layout as of right now is just a figure 8.
I hope to change that once i move bombsite b out of CT spawn.

I lightened up the main room a bit too, but it's not too different than what it was before, so i didn't post that particular screenie.

Huntey: If i can keep up my motivation for this map hopefully we will be able to play it soon!

And darkie, My inspiration from this map comes from a cross between Natural Selection's industry theme, and combine technology; so you're not too far off from what i'm going for.

Started with a basic counterstrike layout map. Had expert bots playtest overnight and it was surprisingly balanced. I'm starting to detail the main room / choke point. Not sure where i'm going with everything, but i'm also starting to get into the effects of different lighting techniques.

So i have only about 4 hours into this so its VERY MUCH SO WIP.

Comments / Criticism GREATLY appreciated. Tear it apart for all i care. It's the only way i can improve.

Stuff I'm aware of:
Ceiling is VERY bland
Shadows are orange due to ambient env_light i havent fixed
Some texture alignment errors.

Is the map near the edge of the grid?
So you have any complex geometry? (triangle terrain)
Is there something hidden in a visgroup you're overlooking?

And i can't actually run the game yet so see it in perspective (hasnt been released) but this IS the lighting that's in the game.
It's kinda dry on models and ents, but i hope that's fixed once the game is released.

I sense we need a NS mapping tips section.. But at the same time this is so user friendly it's scary.
They even have scalable props! something i actually dreamed about 2 nights ago.
The dynamic light view is fantastic, after switching to unlit shaded, everything looked like shit.

But they don't have a skew tool... Yes you can skew pre-existing architecture just moving the edges and stuff, but skewing props would be useful..

I'm gonna stop ranting now, i can go on forever about it.

OK So just got home from my cuz's 25th b-day party, now i'm playing with Spark.
Holy Goddamn.... This editor is outstanding.
The texture editing is incredible. Each face has it's own selection thingy. Has a rotation ring and stretch handles so you can actively stretch and rotate any texture you want.

Automatic VMing via selecting faces, vertices, and edges and moving or rotating them.

Engine also supports valve VTF files, and is automatically converted to the NS II format.

I'm in love.

I loved natural selection when it first came out... This looks incredibly sweet! Definitely considering buying it.

Real BMI is calculated in water. dunno how, but that's what i've heard so it's true.

5'11 - 185 pounds
Always knew i was overweight, but i've always been this way... where'd i put my wii fit?

UPDATE!!
Windows 7 - Bane of Goldsource. (lags on simple maps :( )
Luckily enough i have another computer at my disposal that's running a brand spanking new version of XP. So i'm going to install steam on THAT computer, transfer all the CD files, and work on Disposed some more.

Benefits - It's a lower end machine than this current one, meaning that any map i make that runs smoothly on that machine will DEFINITELY run smooth on any of your guys' computers. (It's a 3.0GHz P4 with 728Mb ram running a radeon 9550 card)
So it's not THAT bad but still, my system owns it in it's sleep.
-While stuff is compiling, i have a fully functional other computer to mess with.
-When i compile stuff into mod formats for release, i can just transfer the mod between computers to test compatibility and completeness.

Cons - I'll have to log out of steam on this machine in order to play it on that one, and i don't have a separate chair for that 'desk' so i have to stand up while mapping. (It's not a desk, it's actually resting on top of a bunch of drawers) I gave away my 15" LCD monitor with the new system i build for a friend, so i have his old CRT monitor :(
  • I hate slower computers
  • School is KILLING ME SLOWLY, i havent mapped at all in about a month
Fear not, i haven't given up. I just have to get my head straight.

I like drinking beer because i like the taste. Full bodied, hoppy, dark beers.
Bud light and Busch and all those other cheapos are party and pong beer only.

Oh and captain morgans original spiced and Sprite (lemon lime soda) or ginger ale, tastes like cream soda = win

Just the basics so far. Valve-Textured room with the main furniture. Gonna add the ceiling, A/C vent, radiator, fan/light... etc etc.

best part is, EVERYTHING is in the 8 unit grid, so i can scale up/down as i please. Seems a bit small ATM, but that's just a CTRL+M away!

Does anyone have a general 'material' wad?
Like generic Wood, aluminum, glass, paint.. that sorta thing?
I'm terrible at making them myself, and paint.net hates me.

I saw surrogates friday night. And it was good. Not great, but good. There were some bad acting moments, and some WTF moments, and it was incredibly predictable. But it was a good movie. My only disappointment was in the fact that Breaking Benjamin's New single was 'in the movie' as the second song in the credits.
Needless to say my girl and i were the only 2 idiots in the theater enjoying it.

And strider, I'd expect the aliens to use our mannerisms after they've been on our planet for years. you pick up on things after you're in an environment.
