in Mod idea... Post #210826
Definitely needs a lot of work before that story will be good. Even if it's a "comedy mod", nobody will be able to understand what's going on if you're playing the mod and everything happens like you explained it.

For instance, why did you hide in a cabinet? That makes absolutely no sense, unless you had some kind of previous knowledge of this operation happening, and then you would just get out of the school as fast as possible, not hide.

The secret room and the "anti-bully suit" just seem to be convenient ways of getting an HEV suit replacement on the player. I'd completely eliminate this part, and just give the player a HUD to begin with.

Having the Black Ops just "suddenly come in" is also pretty lame. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, and it could be for some humorous reason, but you need SOME reason why they "suddenly came in".

And last but not least, stop using "ur" and "u". It makes you look like an incompetent n00b, and people will generally take one look at a description written like that and decide you aren't serious about any of it.

You've been playing Half-Life with the RPG way too much, and you're having illusions of its laser sight in your vision. You are also mistaking RL for one big single player map. Consult your doctor immediately.

I'm no Source mapper, but from what I hear, you have to manually create a camera before you can see anything in the 3D view. There have been other threads where this has been explained before.

In the properties of the entity, set the render mode to "Texture" and the FX amount to something like 60. I'm not sure exactly what the best number is for this, but 255 will make it fully opaque, so you just go down from there. 90 is usually a good bet for windows, so I figured 60 might be good for this.

in Spinning Siren Lights? Post #210696
All you'd need for the rotating light beam is a func_rotating with a red texture on it and some degree of transparency. You could then use env_renders to turn it on or off (by setting render mode to "Texture" and FX amount to "255"). For the actual light source, you would just use a red colored light entity that you could turn on or off.

I too thought the low-def weapons were good a while ago, when the maps still had a Black Mesa-ish feel to them, but now that they're all realistic looking, I think it's a bad idea. But whatever. I don't have much say these things anyway, I'm just a lowly mapper who needs to get to work.

Good job indeed, but I'm always worried custom models won't mix with the old Half-Life ones. Maybe if you include the high-def models with the mod, and edit the skins slightly, or something...

To be honest, it doesn't really look like pr0n, but it does bare a strange resemblance to a naked (or incredibly skinny) female figure standing there. It's not even very noticeable unless you look at the thumbnail.

As I see it, anybody can produce a map however they like. All that matters is the end product, and something as small as some arrows on the side of a viewing area is not going to change the outcome of a map, just the way you got to it.

/me stops hijacking the thread, and urges everyone to continue on with the original subject of discussion.

BTW, get rid of those stupid scroll arrows. They make you look like a n00b, when you post screens of your WiP.
That's ridiculous. People can scroll around their map in whatever way they like best, and it doesn't make somebody look like a n00b just because it's not the way you prefer to do it.

And yes, the map is crappy looking, doesn't resemble the original screenshot that much, and needs a LOT of improvement. Your first step should be ditching the original textures, since maps like this (or any map that isn't Half-Life themed) usually look like shit with them.

Those arches have way too many faces, in my opinion. That's the kind of thing you see in Source, not Half-Life.

Good looking map though. It looks like you put a lot of work into it, but I still think those arches are overdoing it a bit.

Yeah, I know. I'm saying that there's a huge difference between the two, and what you were doing before making it transparent wasn't really an alternative, just an entirely different thing.

That's actually a different thing entirely. If you chop the squares out, it adds all those extra faces in, and it could increase your r_speeds dramatically.

in WANTED - Coders for new mod Post #210173
I am making a new mod which I hope will be very popular.
Don't we all, now? Too bad it's not going to happen. The era when a Half-Life mod could be popular is over. Now it's just small releases that get little attention except within certain groups of people.

Anyway, I don't think you're going to get much help here, because there aren't many coders. Not only that, but it sounds like you're wanting quite a bit to be done for you.

No, there's not really anything you can do to decrease the size of a BSP, short of making the map smaller. I'm wondering though, why do you even need to reduce the file size? They usually don't get above 1 to 3 MB for a normal sized map with no custom textures.
