Maybe one of you can focus on the splash music, both of you could do different parts of the intro map... or mabye, you could work collaboratively?
OR YOU COULD FIGHT

Anyway i'm fairly excited to see what y'all come up with.. I'll try to flesh out the intro map and splash soon to give you guys more to work with. we'll also need button click and hover sounds for the splash...(i actually did use Jeff's suggestion to make the door sounds for them and it's kind of cool, but we can go with what the majority thinks is best.

And once the mod is compiled, to save work, I think any further submissions should go to a rooms2 : combat mod
Noone wants to start another, different coop more than me, but i'm going to hold to my promise that there WILL NOT be any deadline for the rooms coop. (sorry i didn't respond to that right away!)

However, as soon as the first, complete release is put in the mapvault, i would TOTALLY be psyched to start a NEW coop, with a stronger, more specific theme/premise. (i think it'd be neat to do a team map, where like 12 people break up into 3 or 4-person teams, and each team is assigned tasks to complete: everything from concept/design, to the finished product)
The mystery mapper is Kasperg

Also btw, i can't figure out how to upload to x10hosting... do new users have to wait a period of time before they can start uploading, or what? (I don't see any dialogs or menus for uploading content, and i tried FTPing, but no workie.

I was thinking an instrumental/futuristic/ambient theme. I was also thinking or making like 4-6 individual tracks, mushed together to make one eclectic, semi erratic theme. Kinda like take song, play it for 15-25 seconds, and then blend it into the next one. Even tho they'd all be different, they'd all have to have some sort of common thread i guess, but not necessarily. This would all be great if i new anything about music production!

But heck, if you're willing to compose some original music, do whatever you think would be cool. If you want to wait to see what the intro map and splash are going to look like before you begin, that's cool, but it will be a while because i just started the intro map...

Nice keep the input coming for the splash screen and the intro map, because i'm starting work on them now.

Is there anyone out there musically inclined? I'm not, but it would be great to have some original music for this...

I wanted to make the intro map a coop project--and still do!--amongst all the authors, but since i didn't get much feedback about that idea, i'm starting work on it now, myself.

Also btw, i've just been informed via PM, we have another TWHL mapper joining the rooms project! He is a very skilled mapper, so I'm fairly excited to see what he makes! (i'll keep his identity seekrit until he decides to let you know) YAY MYSTERY MAPPER

NEW Rooms BETA AVAILABLE NOW:
Rooms Latest Version (permalink - you can bookmark this if you like)
Mirror 1

This latest version is in minimod format. Pleeze authors test this release, and forward your comments/concerns/requests for changes. I'm still experiencing major visual and entity bugs when i play the game in minimod format, but it runs fine for me if i copy/paste the gamefiles to the valve directory. Remember, i don't have the ability to test WON, so if some of can do that, would be great.

When you report your comments and concerns, pleez tell me what version of HL you're using (WON or STEAM), and, if you what format you played the game in (MINIMOD or VALVE DIRECTORY).

This latest release contains maps submitted by the following authors:

Captain Terror
JeffMOD
hlife_hotdog
raver
Rimrook
Tetsu0
SpaG
nefarious
TJB
MuzzleFlash
Zeeba-G
and now
World Crafter

Authors: feel free to provide updated versions of your map at anytime, and i will immediately make the changes.

To those with WIPs still out there, or those thinking about it: there is no rush, and no deadline. Submit your maps whenever you're ready, and i'll add them to the mix.

Request: Are there any among you that are musically inclined? Maybe someone could compose a theme for the Splash screen and soon-to-be-built intro map?

Urby: that reminds me i'm going to add/test your splash screen right now. Can/should we make custom menu item text/sounds?

Disco: Sure, map away = )

I think it's a great idea. It's 2037 for me local time, and all the lights are out in my house that are usually on, thou i still have my 'puter plugged in and a lamp on so i don't kill myself tripping.

That would be cool if stores and malls and bars participated and closed down for an hour, even though it's sunday and they're not open anyway.

It's just smart and logical to do things to save on resources in general: waste is fail, period. you need as much money as possible to build moar pylons for your turret matrix defense...

Yeah, the ZHLT lightflags seem to fail totally imo.

I had this hallway where the floor was not reflecting light at all--completely black--, no matter how high i turned the lights up. This pissed me off for hours because i couldn't fathom what was happening. Turns out the door in front of the hallway set to "opaque, block light" was causing the problem for some ungodly reason.. I never even try to use the zhlt lightflags anymore.

Is this for your rooms map?

in Texlights light only parts of faces Post #264404
I found using zhlt lightflags like (opaque blocks light)causes some damn weird light glitches like this. Have you used and lightflags anywhere around there?

I've also found using "texture light style" on func_walls to make texture lights blink, pulse or what have you, will also sometimes cause lighting glitches all across the map. If you have any of these in your map try deleting them.

Last thing i can think of is make sure they are either both world brushes or both brushed entities, as obviously world brushes will react differently to light than entity brushes.

Last last thing i can think of is if you have a light_environment in the map. maybe it's lighting that area more than the other fsr... you could try disabling the light_environment to test.

LUL give him the beta test Muzz! = )
Turn each one of those floating brushes into func_walls. Do the same with other complex weird shaped geometry and groups of detail brushes.
Muzz is there anything wrong with changing the complex geometry as well to func_illusionaries, instead of func_walls?(reduces clipnodes, no?) I always change any weird geometry to func_illusionaries, and if the player can touch them, i place a simple, cube-shaped clip blocks under them, like you would with a cycler...

Is there any downside to changing tomany world brushes to func_illusionary?

psilous: I opened up your map and there are no errors i can find(this is some crazy-looking stuff!). I'm compiling your map now with:

csg: -cliptypesimple
vis: -full

like muzz said, as a test, delete all your point lights, and add ONE light_environment, or ONE Light_spot set to "sky emits light" (like Tetsu0 said), and see if that eliminates the error...

If this works, do also as Muzz said, and replace all those troublesome pointlights with texture lighting.

yeah, in my experience, that flag doesn't do anything. Wav files with cues loop and those without cues don't, it's that simple. I've never had a problem like you're having before with editing cues... it's always been a rather straightforward thing imo...

Maybe post a link to the wav file in question? I'll test it myself if you want.

The map--woot49--loads fine for me, i don't get the parsing error or "looping sound" error. Maybe try deleting/reinstalling TS and possibly also HL?

I've never seen that "max_map_lighting" error, and can't find any info about it on the forum or tommy14's site.. Maybe you should try making a smaller, simpler map, and try compiling it without errors, before tacking a big project like this?

Also, as a rule, i would recommend compiling often, like say every hour of editing time. I would also recommend archiving these compiled versions of your map. Doing these things are important because:

1. You'll catch and debug errors more quickly, before they become too hard to find.

2. you'll be able to revert to an earlier version of the map, if you come across an error you can't easily debug/identify.

LOL finally got it to load:
User posted image
Initial thoughts:
-turn up your maxviewabledisstance in hammer under map\map properties. (Some things disappear in your map because your distance is set too low). turn it up to 10,000 or somethin, or you can experiment to see exactly where the threshold is..

-many "hole" still where you can fall through the floor, underneath the map, and see through the ground to the skybox. (i'm running woot47, so i'm guessing some of these problems are already fixed)

-no vis or rad run, but i'm guessing too you'll have some lights in your next compile.

-your walls are unusually thin. make them 8 unints thick at the very least, at least anywhere players can "see" the edge of the wall. But really, vary the thickness of walls to whatever looks realistic (interior walls will be thinner thatn exterior walls, the scale of commercial buildings should be bigger in proportion--thicknesses and ceiling heights). Also noticed your scale in much of the interior spaces seems cramped. Scale them up a bit to again, whatever is realistic.

-you have trigger brushes visible in front of doors, so i'm guessing they are trigger multiples that you accidentally changed to a world brush.

-texture application is dodgy in places, well, pretty much everywhere! = )

-initial layout looks pretty cool. i like the urban settings and all the buildings. (will you be able to enter most/all of them?)

-good use of model placement with the trees, benches, cash register, etc.

-i found none of your doors work, and with some open doorways they are either too small to enter, or there is some invisible brush blockin the players way. (i tried to get noclip to work for testing purposes, but couldn't: is it possible in TS?)

Anyway, looks pretty standard, quality-wise for a beginner map. No better or worse than most beginner's maps i've seen. The more familiar you get with hammer and the compiling process, the better you'll get. it's not hard but it will take a while before you can build something worth downloading. (some people get the hang of this faster than others, but it took me a LONG time to manage anything decent). It depends how hard you work i guesss.

yup what the killer-duck says is correct, load the .lin file instead of the pts file, and pay attention where the line changes from red to blue to find your leak source. (you will have to repeat this process multiple times if you have multiple leaks)

If you can't find where the line intersects your map, you may have an entity, or part of an entity-based brush touching outside the world, which is another way to cause a leak.

If you need help to narrow down where the leak is, you can also use the "big box method" or make a giant world brush(s) to cover up 3/4 of your map, compile, and see if you still get the leak. repeat to localize where the leak is coming from. (this becomes more problematic if you have multiple leaks)

Also, you're still missing: sprites/xsmoke2.spr... GOD! = )
