in TWHL Lan Party!!! ~2017-18? Post #323177
Right now i'm looking for land to build a house in or around Columbus TX. My dad owns land on the Cummins Creek just north of the town with a small cabin and my mom's family owns 100 acres on another stretch of the creek. I may get an acre on which to build if we are able to divide up the land hopefully this year.
User posted image
Well my plan is to build a house on it, possibly a barndominium. Maybe something like this.
User posted image
Once construction is completed I think it would be epic to host a TWHL lan party there. And being on the Cummins creek, if anyone's interested we could kayak, fish and enjoy the nature. I'd personally fillet the fish and fry it up for everyone.

As i'm not sure how long it will take to divide the land, build a house, all that, the date of the event would be a pretty long time away and hard to tell when. But I hope to have it some time in/ around 2017-2018. I know it's a long way away to begin planning but hey why not?

We could play half life, counterstrike, csgo, tf2 and really anything along with meet each other in person :glad:. This is all open to discussion.

Think about it, all it will cost you is a round flight and some vaca. time whereas for me it will cost an entire house build.

I also think it would be cool to make some maps for the lan party. It would be cool to have a lan party map competition. I think the lan party alone would be plenty of motivation to crank out some maps.

Let me know what you think and if any of you are willing to possibly venture into something like this down the road.

Some homes I've designed in hammer. I've designed many more in other programs but these are a few I've considered building that I've mapped.

Thanks dude! I have now, wow they are pretty sweet! I love the stair ways, they look good when they're off centered a little to create an opening down the middle.

Yes i'm really fascinated with placing homes atop a single column. It just seems right.

Gah, either I place the house on my dad's property or I find land to buy myself. Everything's either way over priced or has a happy little deed restriction so that you can build a regular pos house on it.

Edit:
When I purchase my land/lot i'm totally posting it here so people can make suggestions as to what I should build. I'm looking at a few tomorrow.

I'm going to probably build a 24' geodesic dome house atop a ~15-20' 5' wide Steel pipe containing a spiral stair case that will over look a beautiful creek on my dad's property in Columbus, TX this year.

It looks something like John Lautner's house in LA.

I was pretty sad that I missed this myself. I was out fishing a lake.

Maybe we could plan another brief server host and have a time period to make a map for it. It could be half life death match, and it could even be a competition.

I'm a draftsman. All you need is to be proficient with autocad, good at geometry. Some math helps, just used the Pythagorean theorem today to find a length. 3D modeling helps a bunch too. And I do all of our graphics with the Adobe suite especially photoshop and illustrator.

I use what I honestly learned in highschool, 2D drafting and some of what I learned in college although I did not get my degree.

Drafting is a really fun and decent paying field.

Maybe keep the next mini competition extremely simple, like map a prefab for a bounce pad or something.

I give up trying to map this as i'm getting all kinds of errors on such simple geometry. I could circumvent it if I wanted to but don't have the time.

I wonder if I could make a model of an entire map, import it into hammer and clip the brush work. I'm sure this is how modern levels are made.

Thanks. This tree house is similar to many I've designed in the past.

@ Captain: Wow great work so far, That would be fun to add sub structure to it afterwards. I'd recommend using custom wood textures though. I like the multiple levels you've included.

I had to shift some of the leaves upward to get them out of the way.

I originally made it night time and added Christmas lights to mine but it didn't look very good.

Very nice Dimbark. Congrats on the first in hammer wip posted.

I've said before that the main fous is the tree itself and what you put in it but don't want to force limitations.

That's a cool idea Captain Terror, let me dig up the original inspiration for this competition and take a screen of it or two. (A really old map I made and still have the bsp. fsr.

Feel free to use the textures Rolling Barrel.

I'll try to get a wip in this weekend although i'll be pretty occupied.

Edit:
Here's the old images of the map that inspired this competition.

What I like to do is take a few 8.5x11's and cut them in half. Then fold them and staple at the edge to make a little booklet. Next, use your mind to imagine the beginning middle and end/ and other ideas. And jut begin writing them in the booklet, also jot down some sketches of ideas you come up with along the way.

The first booklet will be full of lots of writing, bad sketches, chicken scratch etc. Then read through the first one and think about it some more and, repeat. Make a new booklet and start over, write a part of the plot per page, add drawings etc.

This is how I made Somewhere in Time, I did this all while at work :) lol.

Hope this helps.

I would say let's go with two weeks but don't want to drown out mc2. So maybe three would be perfect. In about three weeks from today, so around i'd say the 25'th of September. That Monday, so that we have the final weekend to work on our entries.

We'll play it by ear though and it may get cut off in two weeks which would be on the 18'th, again so we have that final weekend.

@Rolling Barrel, i'm glad you might participate. I will post in your thread about getting ideas rolling to give you my two cents.

@Dim, I made it for goldsource because of the simplicity of the engine. It was a personal prefereance for a mini competition. Feel free to port for source and make an entry.

@Captain, i'll have to check out what you are talking about. Feel free to tweak the water to make it look better along with anything in the base map. You can even change the skybox if you like for example if you want a night map or something.

@Disco, the size of the tree was randomly created although I've worked on tree houses in about three dfferent trees, a pretty large tree, a gargantuan tree over a creek and a gargantuan pine tree. So I have some sense of scale when it comes to trees for tree houses. I'd say this tree is a good medium sized tree for a medium sized tree house.

Of the many tree houses I've designed, one I've actually built.

Thanks Captain and I'm sorry for jumping the gun on this one, I just had a good idea and thought I should share. Don't feel like you can't post one as well.

I'd appreciate that Kachito, I was thinking the prize should be through steam games form.

For this competition I think you should use the given tree, I admit it's not the best but it's simple enough to get the message of space across and it is the fundamental basis of the competition. So I feel that it should be concise throughout each other's entries. Remember you can add and or remove three limbs.

The tree house is a great idea actually, it's not like there is only one method of design that could be implemented in a tree house. There are infinite designs that could be implemented.

Task: Map something in the tree. It can be anything. Eh, yea and uh, have fun.

A few rules are listed in the included readme.

Voting will be a poll based system, whoever enters can vote on someone's other than their own. Just pm me your vote. This is so that I and anyone can enter.

Thanks to Rimrook for helping fix my masked textures and play testing.

You can cut off/ add three limbs to make new space.

You can tweak basically everything including lighting and you may delete the rain if you like.
