Penguinboy: I already restarted my computer a LONG time ago, and tried doing the reinstall again, but it just hung up at 34 minutes like it did before. How long should I wait for that, anyway?

I've already spent a bunch of time making these backup CD's in Knoppix (what a pain), so I'll probably just format it. I know I'm probably not going to be able to get all my stuff copied, I'll always forget something! Oh well...

P.S.

Is there any way to partition a hard drive from within Knoppix? I can't write to either of mine, since they're using this stupid NTFS file system.

I have a Knoppix CD, but that would mean restarting the computer. I guess there's really no way around that though, is there?

I'm not so bothered by having to reinstall Windows, but I'm pretty damn worried about all my data. I've backed up much of it, but there's still a lot of stuff that I had just created before it happened (like some really awesome textures :) ).

EDIT:

Come on, people! I need some opinions on this!

Well, I got a new hard drive recently. Oh, and I updated a pirated copy of Microsoft Office through Windows Update, which was pretty much the last thing I did before I restarted my computer. :)

Yesterday, I was unfortunate enough to have Windows stop working for me. It refused to boot up in any way other than Safe Mode, and I had no idea what to do. At that point, I called upon the help of Penguinboy in the ShoutBOX, and he suggested that I do a repair installation.

Well, following through with his suggestion, I attempted a repair installation, but it hardly solved all my problems like I was hoping. Instead, when it got to the part in the Windows installation where it says "installing devices", it pretty much stopped doing anything. That is to say, it was stuck at "setup will complete in approximately 34 minutes" for about 12 hours. A couple hours ago, it just changed to saying it'll complete in 33 minutes, but nothing has happened since then. The hard drive light is off, and the Windows CD isn't spinning any.

So what do I do now? Restart the computer and try again? I'm afraid if I do that, I'll just run into more problems than I had before, as I've heard that bad things can happen from restarting during the Windows install process.

Help?

the RMF produced an invalid solid structure error, not that it detracted from the entry. There was also a mis-placed brush, but I believe that was due to a graphical bug.
Holy crap, I can't believe I never noticed either one of those! They would have been pretty easy to fix, too... Maybe I should start using this HLfix thingy everybody is talking about! :)
I can see that a lot of effort has gone into them.
Not mine! I spent about an hour on it, and 5 minutes or so running around the map. Shame on me!

Oh, I hadn't read through the whole thread properly. I just realized that it's not you that made (most of?) the map. So there is a playable version out.

Holy crap, that's got to be one of the most detailed cities I've ever seen in the HL1 engine. It's huge too, taking up nearly the whole space. Unfortunately, it would be unplayable. WAY too big.

How is this related to the other 1 year old topic?

Anyway, if you don't want it to launch the game after the compile, there's a button you can uncheck if you're in the normal compile mode. If you're in advanced mode, you uncheck the last item on the list (something like run exe, I think).

A life without a god is hopeless, filled with so much despair.
"I would rather believe in God and live a good life and find out he doesn't exist, than to live a bad life and find out he does exist."
If you ask me, it's pretty hard to misunderstand that kind of stuff. Then again, I've been wrong many a time...

n00b #2, are you trying to say that people who don't believe in a god will automatically lead unhappy lives? That doesn't make any sense. Maybe I just misunderstood you, but it sounds like you're trying to say that happiness is based on whether you're religious or not... WTF?

By the way, I hope this won't turn the thread into another heated political/religious debate, but I fear it's destined to become that anyway. :)

This isn't detailing a hallway, It's just plain old mapping. You give us an entrance and tell us to build everything else off of it. So it's basically just making any map you want with lab textures, and then you decide which one is best? It's certainly open-ended, but not very original. :

are you hi?
Hi to you too!

Those specs aren't the worst I've ever seen. I've had to play HL1 on a comp with a 400 MHz CPU, 64 MB of RAM, and an 8 MB video card, and it ran just fine! well, with 640x480 resolution, that is...

Seriously though, what's with 128 MB of RAM? It's so freakin' cheap these days, why are you still stuck with crap like that?

For me, higher than 70 or so is almost too smooth. I just don't like the feeling of it. In fact, setting it to around 30 FPS gives it a cinimatic touch, which can look nice at times.

I don't know about HL2, but in HL1, the FPS is capped at something like 72. You can easily turn the cap higher with some command that I forgot. Maybe HL2 also has some something like this?
