RPGs arent for everyone, Its so different to a classic FPS like hl/hl2, you can just go and explore for hours. Its also a pretty laid back game, the focus is on the realistic simulation of a fantasy world rather than just combat.

Its too bad you cant play it m_garg, I've already got some 200 hours out of the game doing the many many different quest lines for each faction. Dark Brotherhood being the best obviously ;)

plus I didnt know ANYTHING about deus ex before playing it, I didnt even realise it was supposed to be a conspiracy! I wish it were possible to avoid all the hype of todays games like that, I tried my best with Oblivion but I got so much advertising, previews, etc thrown at me I couldnt. HL2 goes one step further on the hype-o-meter, especially given the nonsense release date and 'out of the blue' announcment of its existence.

Under that logic its a pretty weak story, you dont read a good book and say 'that was a good story because I thought up half of it myself'

I suppose HL2 is the best overall FPS ever, discounting deus ex because thats an RPG really. I wouldn't say its the best game though.

Indeed, there are few FPSes with good storylines, not suprising given the genre is essentially action first - shooting and killing lots of things in the first person. In terms of pure FPS HL2 is certainly around the top, but thats comparing it to the likes of Doom/Painkiller/CoD/the thousand games based on the quake engines. If you bring Deus Ex into this, which is heavily RPG as well as FPS, then it can't hold a candle to it.

Ive been pretty dissapointed with the FPS genre in recent times, theres too much emphasis on flashy graphics over substance, the only FPS thats left any kind of lasting impression on me post deus ex was its sequel.

I dont know why I enjoyed Quake 4 so much though, gory fun but not a lot else!

if it had a good story, Valve were pretty crap at telling it. If you haven't played an adventure game you dont know what storytelling through the media of games can be.

Someone's gotta make a game with 2 hours of gameplay just to show those resident evil goons up

When Ive managed to spend over 200 hours with 2 different characters in a single game, its hard not to find 4 hours a fucking joke of a game, whether its 4 hours of orgasmic pleasure or 4 hours of running around a lot.

When I buy a game I expect for it to keep me entertained for at least a couple of evenings, else I feel completely cheated. Yes my judgment is a little clouded because Ive not been a big fan of Valve for years, but I'm speaking more about episodic content in general.

Anyway, this is going nowhere, obviously this game is the one expection of all games ever ever ever, so blah.

YEAH STFU, if you cant do it better yourself then you aren't allowed to criticise it. Valve had so much on their hands with selling steam to every developer going they didn't have TIME to make more than 4 hours of gameplay!

If the box was green i'd criticise that too, which it isnt, why isn't it green, red is a stupid colour.

I never said hl2 was a bad game, I quite enjoyed it and it has some quite amazing features (very good disability support), its definately up there with the greatest fpses, but being someone who was brought up on adventure games and RPGs I do balk at a poor story, give me deus ex any day of the week.

well at least you admit your fanboyism, now you need to learn to cure it

of course theres a reference point, how about the gigantic plot hole that is the end of hl1 and the beginning of hl2? It would be nice if they in any way attempted to explain it so the two games dont feel so laughably distant.

no, but its such a fucking stupid argument 'are you against companies making money', do you care more about playing a good game or would you prefer the company you get it from made more profit

episodic content is expansion packs plus, as little content as possible as often as possible, if halflife 2 wasnt so important to you, you wouldnt be so willing to accept whatever Valve do as inerrant

But why must they make episodes?
Stable cash flow, thats the ONLY viable reason for episodic content.

in fact, 4 hours is TOO LONG, it should be more like actual TV episode length, 1 hour maximum gameplay per episode

infact why bother with all the nonsense 'playing' the game when you can just watch it instead

The level of re-used content from hl2 and the various content that was cut from it, it does feel like it took less than 6 months to put together. The lost coast was also a 'cut' level. I don't believe all the 'free' content they've put out in the past 18 months would make more than a years dent in development time, unless they're working on something we dont know about. I can't think of many expansion packs in recent times that have been this short though!

minerva was a free mod made by one person, valve had their entire development team for 18 months and they only managed this, I dont see how you can even compare them

short term episodic content makes sense for independent developers like adam foster or other small teams, but for large established development teams like Valve it just feels lazy and rather milking of a certain cash cow

because you CANT DOUBT RELIGION, would you honestly accept as a christian that its possible that god may not exist, jesus may not have been his son and that you dont go to heaven if you are good. They are fundamental principles of your religion that cannot be doubted because they are 'the word of god', scientific doubt is on the basis that there is always more to find out, that may disprove current theories and hypotheses, in christianity you can hardly keep finding more evidence. A belief system is not anti-science but the two should be kept seperate.

too late etc

Im not touching fear with a bargepole after a friend with whom I share very similar interests advised me against it.
jobabob, have you played it yet? Its very fun, and quite impressive in every meaning of the word impressive. Yes it is short, but dont forget its only 20 bucks. Its the same length as FEAR, and FEAR was 50 bucks! Its quite worth it.
No and I dont doubt that in its short length it is crammed with great graphics, gameplay, scripted sequences, 'story', blah blah that make it an enjoyable experience. I'm still not spending 12 quid on a fun afternoon because the whole idea of episodic games makes me want to scream. If they released 3 episodes of this as a pack for 27 quid I'd probably buy it, because it would be a GAME.

Would you be happy if halflife 3 with its brand spanking new amazing shiny engine was a pathetic 6 hours long? You've barely got into the game before you're booted back to the desktop.

Im against episodic content because it means short, unfulfilling games. Every game I've played thats been less than 10 hours has felt a waste of my time and money. At the moment I want a new game to play after wasting half my life with Oblivion (A SINGLE GAME), I might as well rent a couple of films as I'll get as much as the 4-6 hours of halflife 2. It could have the flashiest most brilliant scripted sequences ever in it, but its still fucking short!

You're all fanboys and I hate you, mmeehhhhhhhmmnnnnn.

I just wanted it to be longer, A few nights ago I said I wouldn't buy the next 2 if this was crap But now I'm going to buy the next 2 for sure.
Thank you Valves target audience, you dont even care that you get a third of a game for half of the price. Thanks for the plot spoiler post, I wont need to buy it now.
