Install games from the CDs.
Install Steam.
Create a Steam account.
Steam auto-detects installs and uses that content as a start.
Steam will update the games to the current version.

Simple as.
If you're prompted for CD Keys enter them.

To place a weapon on the ground you would use an armoury_entity. Set Weapon as you want it, probably with the weapon_ prefix I expect.

In my opinion though, placing the weapons on the ground is a bad idea. Equipping them to the player with game_player_quip is much better. If you'd prefer to do it that way (I recommend it personally) then read: http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Tutorials/tutorial.php?id=12

It sounds like you've miss understood the sarve tool a bit. It also sounds like you've done some Unreal mapping since that's how the "making 2 basic rooms and connecting them with a hallway" type tutorial would go (Since you would simple make 3 subtracted brushes)... Anyway, the carve tool is used to carves gaps in a brush (you're actually splitting the brush into several). You use a brush to carve into the other brush. So making a hallway between two rooms the way you're trying to do it would require you to also carve out of the middle (hallway) brush so that you can walk through it. - That's all a really bad way to map using Hammer so forget it.

It's better if you start mapping with Hammer forgetting about tools such as carve and construct everything by making each brush from scratch. Make a floor, walls, ceiling - 6 brushes. Then continue to split up your wall manually to make the gap where the hallway will go - 4 brushes. After making two rooms like that you would do the same again for the hall except all you need is the floor, 2 walls, and ceiling - 4 brushes. There's your "two rooms connected by a hallway" for Hammer. :)

I'm not sure why you get floating weapons really. I've never encountered it when i've made aim maps - although I've seen it in other peoples. Maybe it's to do with the delay between the stip and equip in the multi_manager not being far enough apart??? try .3 for the strip and .8 for the equip, that's how I've always set them up, and never had floating weapons problems before. GL.

If i make a ladder that's wooden - Is there a way to change the metalic sound that is used when the player climbs the func_ladder? I really need the ladder in this area to be vertical since the space is too limited for a staircase, and a metal ladder will not look right.

To launch the game you want from steam at the end of the compile...
Instead of -game, you use -applaunch ##
And for a mod -applaunch ## -game ***

List of applaunches is...
10 : CS
20 : TFC
30 : DoD
40 : DMC
50 : OpFor
60 : Ricochet
70 : HL
80 : CS:CZ

So a mod would be like this example...

-applaunch 70 -game Sven Coop

I see why you think Hammer is crap if you've mapped with UED, which is quite an exceptional editor, especially the latest version. Hammer looks, and is somewhat simplistic in comparison, but then HL1s Quake based engine isn't exactly much compared to the Unreal Engine. In short - it does what it's there for very well, and get 3.5beta. :)

Hey, ok I know how to display text on the screen and stuff, but it doesn't really fit what i'm trying to do so my question is...

Is there anyway to open text in a window with the Ok button like the motd.cfg? For example I would like to make a letter, when you "Use" it the test window appears displaying the text, and you click Ok. Can this be done???

Thanks, btw mapping for Sven Coop, which is why I would like to be able to do this to help have a strong plot :)
