Yeah, offline mode = fail.

I they could just enter a script to force it, it would be all-dandy :)

Rotor:

Nope. Once you try to connect and fail, you're essentially locked out.

If you know ahead of time that Steam will be fucked up, just block Steam in your firewall settings, and offline should work fine.

The problem is, who knows when it'll be down, and if you want to change between multiple accounts, you're just fucked. (in offline mode)

How I could get a WON style install from my steam files?
I don't think you can. If they're not selling the old WON editions anymore--I dunno--, then you have to find it somewhere else--ebay, a friend, etc.

What don't you understand about being able force offline mode if you own the product?

Even with all the options set to favor offline mode, it STILL happens from time to time that you can't use offline mode.

Like god-for-fuckin-bid you have multiple steam accounts, and you want to switch from one to another while offline... well, good luck with that. You have to authenticate with steam, or you simply can't do it. :|

It's goddamn-fucking bullshit. Period.

LOL yeah!

I take a screenshot of the map i'm saving, and use its name --mapname0000--as the unique identifier for the version; the screenie makes it easy to see what stage you were in without opening the map too!!)

For each backup. i take:

.bsp
.rmf
.log
.rad (if you have seperate ones for each maps)
.wad (for hlfix)
mapname0000 (the screenie)

Then I select, right-click, and send to compressed--hovering your mouse over the "mapname0000" while compressing the files convienently gives the archive that name.

Done :)

Yeah, it's a good reason to save a few back versions of your map, so if you get into serious trouble you can't fix, you just go back to a previous one.

(I've had some really nasty "leaf saw" errors that turned every single brush in my map into coplanar plane errors somehow. My only recourse was an older version or starting over!!1 Fortunately, I had a backup ;) )

For about every hour of work, I make a backup. 2 or 3 backups is probably sufficient, but at least always have one stable backup--I save all my previous versions!!11

Had you set it to off line mode prior, you could play now.
Um, yeah, maybe if you KNEW ahead of time that the servers were down. As soon as you tried to connect to the servers, you unknowingly blocked yourself from playing half-life for the day. :|

It's bullshit there is no way to force offline mode if you own the product, period. The "crying" is completely justified imo.

There is always WON I guess. I wonder if people buying HL1 today still get the old WON version? Probably not.

1. Load pointfile
2. Click "No" and load the .lin file
3. Follow the line around. Where it changes from blue to red is where you leak is. ( I usually just 3D around the inside of the level and watch for the line to go through the wall--that's where the leak is ;))

Download it and read the instructions--basically remove 4 files from your tools folder and put in the new ones.

The "tools" are what compiles your map. The original q-tools are older than old. ZHLT is the latest/best most stable version of them.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-15 14:54:29 UTC
in Weird problem! Post #206256
K. First of all, dowload ZHLT--nobody uses the original q-tools.

Downlad ZHLT

Also:

?Make sure you never have more than 8 wads--I think you have 7
?Fix the leak

If the stuff disappears only when you walk far away from it, it's the max viewable distance error.

If it only disappears from certain perspective angles, then it's the leaf saw error.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-15 13:48:44 UTC
in Weird problem! Post #206245
It's caused by errors in your compile More than likely you have a leaf saw error in you compile log, like this:

Warning: Leaf portals saw into leaf
Problem at portal between leaves 143 and 167:
   (2048.572 -161.429 -186.000)
(2026.000 -184.000 -186.000)
(2029.000 -190.000 -231.000)
(2029.000 -190.000 -231.000)
(2064.000 -155.000 -231.000)
Go to the coordinates it gives you and delete/remake any complex architecture around that area. (sometimes even simple brushwork yields these errors inexplicably)

The problem brush will also make totally unrelated faces of other brushes disappear--which sucks. (though Fix the error, and they'll render right)

Check your compile log for other errors too. Post it if you want.

If we ever reach a minimal consensus
Never. Happen. Period.

*This thread has been closed by a moderator

edit:
Actually, you'd get some resonable consistency if the maps had something like a Moderator rating--with the average of the same 2-3 people's rating for each map, it would at least approach being consistent.

There's simply no way to make a user rating consistent and otherwise not totally subjective to what he/she/it thinks a [u]star[/i] should be worth.

It's that simple.

Definitely. The image map sorta does that already. All the rest of the stuff you said too in time :)

ZL: I'm glad you're in this one. If you don't make it in time for whatever reason, we are definitely having an Advanced Door Part 2. :)

I agree about the page too, but it works, and is better than just posting stuff in the thread imo. I bought a book on HTML/CSS/XTHML/PHP last year, but I've not had time to read it.

It doesn't look as clean as a normal page, but it's easy to edit and update the image map, so for now it's staying... that is unless, Graveyard Design would like to donate some help :P

I started building a shuttlecraft for the hangar bay, and somehow it turned into the dropship from Aliens!!1

I didn't use reference pics, so there are probably some major errors in the design--like it mattesrs anyway.

It's still quite raw and blocky--the horrid light and textures don't help much either--, but I like it. Many refinements to come, but I'm quite happy with the initial design. If I have time I might even try brushing out the cockpit :)

Like the orbiter, I seperated this from the main map so save on resources and compile time--for now.

This may not even make it into the finished map anyway, because it doesn't really fit the theme. Maybe a DM_Suloco someday :)

Precompiling:

Before big compiles--or any over 5 minutes really--, I always now "precompile" before doing a full VIS and RAD go. By "precompiling", I mean I run fast VIS, and no Rad.

Doing this catches any really nasty coplanars/disapearing brushes, or really any other important performance flaws, before the Full compile.

Oh how it sucks to wait for an hour compile--or longer god forbid--, only to find you have disappearing faces, and have just wasted that hour for no good reason. :aggrieved:

Srry, RotorSplint, and now Daubster--Welcome!--, all have pending entries in the void, So if you are thinking of joining, I would do so as soon as you can :)

Remember, any entries that are present over 5--whenever I wake up on that day and check--will also be admitted for judging, so don't not enter until I post that the compo is officially closed. ;)

Also, If you happen to miss this one, don't worry! I'm sure will be having an Advanced Door 2 sometime soon! :)

Good luck everyone! :)

Submission Note: At the time of the compo close, I will redownload all the entries, to be sure I have the latest version.

Also, the rules say you have to submit a working .RMF file with your entry. Unless there is some stiff opposition to this rule in the thread, It will stand.

I agree, it's quite huge--and getting bigger. Certainly doesn't fit a traditional/contemporary space station design.

Making it smaller would also make it easier to block VIS, and less time/easier to detail.

Still, I'm going to try to finish this in the direction it's going, and maybe the next one will be more realistic/smaller... Maybe the International Space Staion, or Mir, or similar!!1 :P
