Looking great!
I agree with Instant Mix about the BM logo, it really doesn't look right, especially for such an important/otherwise clean area.

I'd also extend the wall supports so that they would connect with the ceiling ones, would make it look a bit more realistic and would break up the upper wall part nicely imo.

I disagree with the claim that compile times decrease.
My Secret Santa VIS compile was ~5x shorter (2.5hrs > 30mins). RAD did end up taking slightly longer, but all-in-all it was a huge gain in my case.

That shouldn't matter, but you can always use any random bright color for the BG before indexing the image. Then you can change the 255 index to blue and fill in the BG with it.

You'll also want to clean up the anti-aliasing of the transparent object before indexing. That usually forces a bunch of unused blues into your palette.

.. and if your palette is already messed up (i.e. the background blue is 0, 0, 255, but its index isn't 255), use the translate colors tool in Wally (Colors > Translate Colors), which lets you swap color indexes quickly.

It's a total lifesaver in some situations.

Sorry guys, but I won't be renewing my subscription for the server.
Not enough time to play Minecraft nowadays, plus the server's mostly been empty over the last few weeks judging from the stats.

I'll put up the world for download if anyone's interested.
It goes down on the 28th.

Had a jolly good time on it - thanks to those who've joined in over the last 6 months. :)

I knew about them for a while now, but only just got around to trying them out yesterday. Not going back to SHLT/ZHLT, that's for sure. Didn't know about the map size thing though, that's awesome.
But it's the spirit of giving that counts.
Agreed, had a blast making mine.

I've started using Zenburn recently (comes with the defaults afaik), it's really easy on the eyes w/o sacrificing readability too much. Really liking it so far.

It really feels like all your (and the enemies) weapons are just barely held together, making for a brutal, tooth and nail sort of affair.
So true! By the end of it, I was completely out of ammo, only had like 2 throwing knives remaining, as well as 2 filters. They've gotten the supply balance so right in that game - it's unbelievable.

Can't wait for Last Light either. Oh, and throwing knives are your friend when it comes to the library mutants. Same applies to demons, actually. I think it took three throws to finish off the TV Tower demon in the end, thank fuck for that. Was completely out of ammo. D:

Can't wait for Last Light.

Also, can't believe they're shutting CSG down. The STALKER franchise had a cult following in eastern Europe, spawning a TV series, conventions, etc. And the games were brilliant, too. Such a shame it all came down to a console publishing deal going nowhere. :<

What have I done. :zomg:

For those interested in making an es_ map, the official ones (all cut before the release versions, so you can't use any of them for your theme) were: es_jail, es_trinity (a really interesting map), and es_frantic. Look them up for a rough idea on how the game mode works, and possibly a reason or two as to why the maps failed. ;)

Making an es_ map work would probably be the biggest gameplay challenge of them all - it's a really weird mode with no well-balanced maps to draw ideas from. as_ maps are also similar in that way, although more common.

Congratulations to Joebama! - with 650 kills and 745 deaths (0.87 K:D)
He added this and this to his stocking.

Due to a blunder on our end, we've somehow managed to miss lost_technology, which in result was never played. To at least somehow make up for this, it has been made the default map on the HLDM server. Meaning that whenever the server restarts, lost_technology will be the first map it runs. Apart from that, it is also on the regular map rotation. Really sorry about that, Zeeba.

dm_shipment was also never played due to it causing a crash in the server. Sorry, 2much!

how on earth did you guys get Valve to give out three beta keys?
Got in touch, told them about the site, they said yes. :)
I know it says to target maps that didn't have great gameplay but does that rule out one's like dust and inferno? I had a dust map in mind for a long time.
Like Pb said, dust has been remade and re-imagined in pretty much every possible way, a billion times each. I know you're highly skilled, so if you really, really feel like you can bring something new to the table in that theme, go right ahead. It's not a favourite though, and it really will need something exceptional to make it look interesting/fresh.

Aztec & inferno are popular as well, and have reasonable gameplay (with inferno being very common in pro league map rotations), but you're free to give them a crack if you want. The original aztec was highly imbalanced, so there's room for improvement there.

But yeah, in the end, we really want this to give the less-played themes another chance. It will certainly be more impressive to see a 747 map that plays well, than a dust one.
Don't you guys think that the standard themes of classic CS are too boring and frequently used? Look, I mean there are thousand of maps using the mentioned themes.
If you mean the most popular ones (dust, etc.), then yes, but certainly not all of them. You can find plenty of good stuff in the unplayed (storm, oilrig, ..), or even cut maps (arabstreets, rotterdam, etc.).
Also, is it allowed/legal/possible to use L4D models in CSS? Because they have all the great airport models.
i want to use the models from hl-lab.ru :o
Go ahead. We're not making commercial projects here.

No problems at all, in fact that is exactly what we're looking for. You have full freedom in what you do with the gameplay, including the map type, layout, etc.

The real goal in your case would be that the players could immediately tell they're playing something based on the havana style. Both in terms of visuals and atmosphere. Take the style in any direction you like, as long as that link is absolutely clear. :)

So essentially what you're meant to do is to make a brand new map based on your chosen theme. In other words, we're not looking for dust_2x2-esque remakes.

Re-invent a Counter-Strike Classic is live, judged by me and Archie.

Since part of the emphasis has been put on gameplay in this competition, we will try to get testing servers up and running in the later stages of the competition. potatis_invalid has kindly agreed to help out with hosting 1.6/CZ, so props for him!

Finally, if you have never mapped for CS, now is the perfect time to give it a shot. The official maps have a big variety of wonderful themes, re-creating which would make for a great challenge for any mapper. :)

Looking forward to seeing which maps you choose!

What sells you to employers as a developer are released projects in your portfolio, where you show that you have the dedication to finish something you've started and to improve on it based on player feedback.

That's why it's absolutely key to start off with something small and realistic that you can pull off on your own.
Once you have a realistic idea you like, think about the development along the lines of Minecraft. It was released as soon as it had the core mechanics implemented with further features driven by what the players wanted/liked.

Always monitor & publish your progress, be it in journal/forum posts here, or even better - a blog. It'll be fun to look back on how far you've gone in the future, as well as make for great portfolio material.

I could drone on for ages.
In a nutshell, channel that enthusiasm into realistic projects (resist the urge to build something monumental as your first project; we've all had to do it), keep at it and you'll be miles ahead of your peers if you ever choose to study/pursue a career in game development.

Rim: Can't wait. Loved the demo.
