Niiice. I love the shadow play being cast into the center of the intersection. I always use the default values to start with then adjust from there, rather than just start with values I'd pretty much guess. It should be pretty obvious why :D Oh, and did you set the spread angle?

The leafs where mine. I didn't know source bugged about 4. Those physics props in the log I noticed, but didnt fix. I thought about turning them into cyclers, but i thought id just leave it for someone with more knowledge.

This is turning out sick, now I can't wait for my second pass!

Guys. Guys. Guys listen. Hey guys, when I set- guys listen. When I set the sun up, I forgot to set the sun spread angle.

Someone should set it. I think 4.5 looks quite nice, personally.

Okay! I'll add something when I get home from work and re-up it!

[edit] back from work! time to crack this sucker open and check out all your works!

[edot] also, im gonna make a graffiti for myself, and I'd be happy to make one for anyone here who doesn't feel like it/can't. I've got a tablet and so I can bang simple tags out pretty quickly. Lemme know! Doesn't even have to be now, last person to edit before we're done can spray them around.

[edpt] guys, has any talking about the layout been going on? and have we picked cs_map or de_map?

[ed[t] so is this sky and lighting temporary? im dying to change it. someoen else can change it again.

I extended the existing freeway, and curved it, to close off that side. I added a building (half is dev still, will get on 2nd pass) and an ally-type yard thing. Also, feel free to say no and tell me that it's overused, but IMHO this sky looks baddass with everything.

now i just gotta figure out how to zip this all up right.

It feels good to flex muscles that haven't been flexed in a while. Here's one of the little fight yards I've been making to practice Hammer. Who knows how to fix those ugly lines that appear on brush edges? I only used to get them on displacements, but now they're everywhere :(

OK man! I definitely want to participate. I've made several little maps since the compo and I've been practicing. I really want to show you guys my progress! Also I'm eager to look at what you've all done in hammer and analyze it.

I'm not 100% sure on how to finish/submit/pass on whatever I do but I'll ask you in PM.

Sorry, this thread went on quite a bit. I got a new job and so I've been a bit busy. I'm still down to do this. Even tho I'm not quite sure what it is anymore. I'll go read the thread.

What do you mean by extend? You can copy+paste and then sew pieces together add to them, stretch them by raising/lowering on Y and X, and just plain old transform them.

I also just realized that my map's going to be half-finished and the gameplay sucks, but fuck it, gotta submit! thank god i found out about Packrat so I don't have to worry about collecting all the custom shit and properly zipping it.

Damn that's hot! Maybe just slightly yellower lighting? A few feint glowing red lights (switches of some kind, or emergency lights) here and there would really flush it out and compliment the splashes of blue IMHO.

You should enter anyways. I found out today I'm going snowmobiling until Sunday, so I'll have 3 days to finish instead 8. Ah well, it will be fun and maybe being in a very snowy environment will give me a couple last-minute ideas.

Ah, friggen Battlefield 3. I'm going to finish- but it won't quite be on the scale I originally intended. I found out I reached top 10 of over 20,000 players on one of the reddit BF3 servers, and so I've been hitting it pretty hard. I feel some obligation to show up at least daily and play well.

I also decided, at the worst possible time, to take up Diablo 2 again until 3 comes out- also on a private reddit server. I'd be happy to give the info to anyone and play with them/help them out. You don't need a genuine install. I own 2 copies of LoD and have 3 copies of D2 registered to my bnet account- but I can't find the damn discs. You don't need them here. It's the bee's knees compared to BNET. Zero spam bots, everyone there loves the game, maphack is allowed (but no botting/pickit- anything that affects other players is cheating) and there's a 24/7 freebie room for getting people started!

I vow to submit though. I've been here for six years now- I owe genuine effort to each and every one of the admins and dedicated regulars here. I've submitted only one map, finished just one compo now, but I really consider you guys friends. This shit is fun and you're all fun people.

I can't wait to play these maps!

Knowing that it would take me too long to get it looking good enough, mostly. I could spend hours on building a mountain range out of displacements only to delete it all because it looks like garbage. I've deleted the entirety of my displacements and started fresh four times now I think. So, I'm going to keep things pretty minimalist and go with distant card scenery.

Under a time constraint and considering how slowly I'm relearning this stuff, I don't even feel a tiny bit bad about it. Valve does it, I'm doing it.

Capt nail'd it, the sun is low and behind the camera. There are large shadows being cast. I do still want to blend the outdoor areas. I was going to use that color correction tut and also I can just recolor those trees and mountain textures. Haven't done fog yet. I need do rim's skybox fog tut as well I think.

Also, is there a material that blocks light but is invisible?

in How did you start mapping? Post #302989
~What made you start mapping in the first place?
Playing Marathon on one of my dads Mac's. I found the editor and started making stuff. From there I dabbled in the new things I found.

~What was your first map?
First map ever, no clue, first completed Gold map was some CS:CZ goodness. A demolition map with it's own cool theme.

~Where did you get inspiration for your first map?
I don't know, playing games I imagine.

~To who did you show it & how did they react?
My first complete map was for my clan at the time, they liked it. I made a bunch of smaller GoW inspired symetrical maps for them to dick around in also. I do have an incredibly awkward story about when I was just starting out and the creator of de_dust, de_dust2, de_cobble, de_tides and some others David Johnston. I basically sent him the first eagerly half-finished room connected to a hall I ever made and he actually wrote about it in his blog. I don't think it was even compiled, I think it was a shot from in-editor. It probably took me an afternoon. Funny stuff. He was nice about it, it was pretty obviously nooby and so he went over basics.

~Your advace to future mappers/current mappers?
If you hold your shit up on a plate in front of a professional shitter, he's going to call it shit. Keep shitting anyway.

lol, that pond is 3d skybox. most of it anyways, you can sort of see where it changes. CT spawn and the rescue zone are on the shore of that pond, so i made it blend into skybox so it could be big. I think it needs mountains in the distance, I might have to make a texture of those myself.

After 70 or so hours in Skyrim I had begun to play less and less. Then I installed every graphical mod I could get my hands on, and I have completely fallen in love with this game all over again. I play with my monitor's saturation and contrast cranked up, because real life is saturated and vibrant, so these screens don't really give the full impact- but it's close.

Well, the theme is from de_survivor. Alpine. Snow, ice, pine trees, you get the idea. Maybe if I can find a crashed plane model I'll throw one in there to really seal the deal. I don't know if I want to give away everything yet, but the layout is a remix of another map which never got extremely popular either.

Yeah, func_illusionary is confusing. The wiki says that it is obsolete, and only in the SDK for compatability with goldsrc. However if you open up an official valve map like cs_militia in the sdk, you see that they use func_illusionarys to make some of the tree lines! Meanwhile other tree lines in the same map use func_detail! Very confusing. I just won't touch it.
