in Mapping - How can I use materials direct Post #246582
Afaik, you can't load other GCFs that aren't part of the game you're mapping for. The only way to do it is to extract the textures from the GCF itself and add them to the correct directories. However, you do run into problems with Valve's TOC which, I think, state that you cannot package any of Valve's content into your own map and upload it. That would include taking textures from, say, Counter-Strike: Source and using them in Half-Life: Source.

Your basetexture line is completely wrong. It should look like this:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "custom/AK-47"
}

Ok, yeah, that's the problem. Textures that are meant for models do not work properly if you place them on a normal brush. You have to find an alternate texture.

What texture are you using for it? Does it have a 'model/' prefix? If so, use a texture without that.

Ok everyone, we know there's going to be bugs, so post them in here. Please use this formatting:
  • Bug number 1
  • Bug number 2
  • etc
We shall try and handle them as best we can. As far as we know, there are no overly crippling bugs at the moment, but tell us if there are. Thanks!

Known bugs and fixes:

HTML code (&#8226; and the like) appearing in journals/forums/other places
[m]Edit the text (if possible), and the new system should take care of it.[/m]

Avatars in the forums and other places overlap the side
[m]Clear your browser cache, or press f5 whenever you see it[/m]

Formatting in competition pages/other places contains HTML entries (<strong>, etc)
[m]These will be edited out by the admins in time.[/m]

"More Screenshots" link in the vault doesn't work
[m]The code for this is not operational at the moment, it will be soon[/m]

Only one page on the search page is visible
[m]Will be fixed in time[/m]

Where does it say I'm logged in?
[m]We're looking into adding something next to the search form. wait for it.[/m]

Some people may have random logout issues.
[m]I have never encountered this. if you have not enabled cookies, enable them. cookies are used when the php session times out (if a page is not loaded for a while). otherwise, make a note of what you were doing at the time and send Penguinboy a PM about it.[/m]

Uploading images in the tutorial form deletes my content!
[m]Save your content before uploading images.[/m]

Some tables look weird (missing borders on empty cells)
[m]This is a design issue, and a fix is not known. We will look into it in the future, but not any time soon.[/m]

Where's "Recent Maps"
[m]It is not gone forever, it will return soon.[/m]

I can't read the thread list!
[m]We're planning on subtle background colour changes. Until then, wear glasses or something.[/m]

AIM, Steam, Xfire, last login, etc. details are not appearing in profiles
[m]Will plan to fix soon.[/m]

Shoutbox Live looks messy
[m]Planning on an update in the near future.[/m]

Magic BBCode Buttons don't insert text at the cursor like the smilies, it puts it at the end.
[m]Will also be fixed in the near future.[/m]

Icons in places (entity guide, etc) are wrong
[m]Waiting on Strider to make new ones.[/m]

Strider sucks!
[m]This is a known problem. A fix is currently not known.[/m]

in Welcome to TWHL3! Post #246220
Welcome to TWHL3! After so many months, it's finally here, but what is it all about?

TWHL3 is the combined efforts of Penguinboy, Strider and myself. We have completely redone the site, including the design and the underpinning code, all to make TWHL a more friendly and enjoyable experience for the great community we have here.

TWHL3 brings with it a fresh outlook for the site, as well as a revised set of rules and regulations. Over the coming month, we shall be enforcing new rules for the site, with fairness and equality in mind. TWHL will no longer be just some old mapping site: we're here to stay and the mods here are in for the long haul.

So what do you guys get? A brand new interface, new content, more tutorials, more resources and brand new features.

We, however, are not done yet. You will probably notice some aspects of the site need tweaking, but we are indeed working on them. We will be unveiling brand new features for the site soon, so stick around! A new competition is on its way, and it'll be the biggest one yet.

I'd personally like to thank both Penguinboy and Strideh for the unbelievable amount of effort they've put into the creation of your new TWHL. We weren't paid for this: we did it for the love of Half-Life, level design and all things Gordon Freeman! That's what this community is all about, so let's kick it off!

Welcome, and enjoy!

Well, it depends what game you're mapping for. For all games, there is a 'materials' folder in the game directory (so it'd be something like usernamegamegamematerials). You can put them in there and Hammer should pick them up (make sure you restart Hammer though).
