At least you got your laptop working again! (you might order a factory reinstall dvd for your laptop model if one's available...the one for my laptop only cost like 12 bucks, and it sets your system back to when it was new with os and original drivers)

Also can't stress enough the importance of backing up your hard work to another source (as you said you did). I lost 7 months of work once when my laptop was stolen... = <

I just bought a new computer and installed the latest batch compiler and latest tools. I used the BC on my old machine and never had a trouble... until now.

If I try to compile the .rmf file, It gives me errors saying it can't find the wads.

If, however, I either compile the .map file or if there is a preexisting .map file in the directory, it compiles flawlessly.

It's a small annoyance, but it took me damn hours to figure that out. I was just about to give up and go to the Hammer compiler, but i really would rather die. afaik on my old machine, the Batch Compiler compiled .rmf files just fine, but I can't test it because it doesn't work anymore, lawl. = >

Does anyone know what's the matter?

I found myself installing from scratch on a new computer, and the links
section looks pretty good, save possibly these two additions:

Nem's tools
and
HLFix

I'm sure there are indirect links to these in the links somewhere (though I couldn't find them easily), but I think they're important enough to have their own. (Nem's surely)

edit: You might also include seventh-monkey's Mapping with steam tutorial at the top of the page (as long as you have the WON setup instructions there), as I'd guess many goldsource mappers use steam.

Sorry if any of this is redundant.

I think there are too many stickies in general, and I think permanent stuff like forum guidelines should be a different font or otherwise seperated so it stands out and people read it.

It might be cool if all the stickies were segregated from the regular posts with a line or shading or something. Imo it's sort of cluttered/confusing the way it is now.

i mean you can use a small amount of custom content that you haven't made yourself. theres no limit on self-made content.
I planned on retooling the original textures from the game I'm doing directly from screen captures (basically ripping them directly).

Is there a limit for this or is it frowned upon?

Ansith: I don't know why your taking so much offense about your map
being characterized as nonplayable. Take a look at the work and time
that went into de_kalt or either of the mario maps... Your map simply isn't in the same league as them in general.

Theirs are full-size carefully designed levels from scratch. Your's is a remake of the lobby from BM:S, right? so your map is a remake of a remake and it's one room. (not that it isn't very nicely made)

It's just my opinion, but I think you should be honored by the votes you got and relax a little. I'm not trying to start a flame war but seriously...

i don't think so. i put in the PM preview because you can't see it after you send it. everything else you can.
I dunno, i love this feature for PMs, it saves me 20 edits and waiting for TWHL to load, which leads me to my next suggestion which really isn't a bug, but a trouble just the same:

I think this has been mentioned and quashed, but I think it would be great to create a paypal account with a goal to meet for more bandwith... this site loads so slow, the interpolice will pull you over = ) (it's better than ads too imo)

I'll donate, and i'm sure others would too. you could choose to do so anonymously or creditied, even give a little commendation for sponsors, but I'm not sure. you could use extra funds for compo gifts lawl.

ok i'll shut it now = )

If it only works when you're in the air, maybe you could supplement the trigger_push with a little, invisible func door underneath that pushes you up, or even a trapdoor at the top of the trampoline: when it drops you (leaving you in the air), maybe the func_push would push you up as desired?

haha that's awseome rimrook! you can bind every frickin' key just like in steam... (there's even a reverse lookup for shortcuts... i think i have to sit down and have a moment!)
Now, i can reset the selection lock bind which i never use and always hit inadvertantly because of using hammer! Now I can set the spacebar just like in hammer to click-drag viewport. :badass:

And as far as taking an hour and a half to finish a simple pipe, I'm not sure if i'm guna have the patience to be a good max skinner. I mean, I want to know how to do it for important projects, but that just seems like a really long time to achieve a relatively simple result.

Is there a "quick way" or "quicker way" to map the textures so they look okey but not perfect? At least for goldsource maps, I would just make the pipe out of world brushes than spend so much time making a model. In some cases this wouldn't be an option, but many it would. I guess 2 in source, models are a lot more valuable as well.

I'll just build a new pipe and start over. = )

Also a couple questions:

How long would it take you to unwrap/paint the pipe?

Like you said, there is a hundred ways to do something in Max: Is there a substantially easier/faster way to get a almost-as-good or "close" result? (like if you were using the pipe off in the distance or a dark area or sumthin)

Misc. Questions:
Question 1: how did you change the viewport and gridline color? I googled and rooted around Max, but can't find it.

Question 2: I have seen the terms "world space" and "object space" thrown around in tutorials, and in certain parts of the max like the grid and snap settings. What does it mean, or what's the difference between them?

Question 3: is there a way to toggle tooltips, like when you hover over a button or tool, it gives you the shortcut key combination like it does in Adobe Photoshop? I have the complete shortcut list for max 7 but it would make things so much easier! = )

edit: ps I like the Maprookie site changes! (the icons and header graphics look nice)

I'd like a tutorial that describes an easy way to make 2d skys for goldsource. It would be cool if there was a program or a plugin for Photoshop, that allowed you to see all the sides of the sky at once, and then properly blend everything in real time, but I've never found anything like that.

I've heard of using terragen, but I don't really mean using a 3d terrain generator, more like making something like the better stock skys from cs 1.6, or even the couple of decent ones from original half-life. I've heard of using modelling programs to do this too, but again, not really what I'm looking for.

So yeah, anyway, if someone knows a simple, easy way to make 2d sky for goldsource, please make a tutorial! = )

If you open the map by typing "map mapname" in the console it should work.

If you're starting the map by "create server" button, then i think the gl_wireframe won't work.

Plus you probably already know, but you need to be in developer mode. Go into steam game list, and right click over the modname (or half-life if it's not it's own mod), go to properties, set launch options and add:

-dev

(this will put you into developer mode automatically)

You can also open the console and type "developer 1<enter>" but once again, not in a multiplayer game. = )

Yeah yer right! = )

I know most of the people involved in these challenges are busy doing a million things at once, Like Daubster is coding 15 mods, facilitating various things at TWHL, and lord only knows what else. Everyone else seems pretty busy too.

Rimrook's modeling thread and work are taking up most of my time, plus now that compo 25 is here, most of my time (and most others) will go into that.

I'm sure these challenges will start up again when compo 25 is over and we're all bored for something to do again! = )

I guess we could do the voting for rube goldberg challenge since nobody else is entering. If anybody has an unfinished WIP for this challenge (tetsu0, Daub, Others?), please submit it so we can reach maximum lulz potential! :P

My vote goes to TJB.

He finished off his entry in mere "minutes" with original/interesting mechanisms, with the aim of the machine to kill the player, which was a great idea too.

I'm not guna lie, I'm having some serious trouble with the unwrap tutorial... I've tried it like 4 times but can't make further progress.

When I try to ctrl+b to move the joint, it sticks, like this:

Wow your were right! Those wheels were rediculously upping my triangle count. Check out the original counts:

polycount (triangles)

body..............300
treads............120
wheels...........2816!!!
turret............593
main gun..........472

total............4301

the new total is 2391 and I still have tons of room to reduce polys if needed.

Sometimes the gizmo gets "uncentered" and it's kinda a pain in the ass seeing where it is... is there a way to reorient it to the center of the object?

Finally, got a generic texture on there and did some basic smoothing tho I still don't really know what I'm doing with that. My textures came out really weird from the edtior ==> compile. Check it:

edit: fsr the decent (not perfect) uvw map doesn't come through the compile and it just looks really weird... I found i had that "flip normals" glitch you were talking about too, tho it took me a while to figure out that's what it was! I tried applying seperate uvw maps to different parts of the model, and while it looked great in the editor, nothing came through the compile as well.

I'm starting the uvw unwrap tutorial now... = )

You're were right! A long time back I adjusted my contrast/brightness/gamma gfx card settings to and that was the whole problem! (setting back to defaults make those pm highlights clear as my stupidity!)

NOTE: These model replacements make my epoly levels skyrocket to over 150,000 (quite unplayable, on my machine at least) on wide-open maps with lots of weapons (like the recent Mario maps), so take that into consideration before using them!

Pretty cool, but I wish the rocket was fatter to look more real... Again, anything is better than the origianl, and the "floor" models are excellent. (also has the hud sprites)

Hope, I'm not too late:

The contenders(I have no source rig atm so only goldsource maps):

De_Kalt:
An amazingly map in all respects, professional grade, and as a personal bonus for me: there are many nicely-detailed world props in the map which are rare/great to see.

Mario maps(world and sky):
Both amazing maps in their own right. custom everything. 2 more professional-grade maps: superb stuff. (ready-made contenders for the new competition?) = )

Aim_labirint:
A very nice, carefully-built aim map.

Black Mesa Lobby Remake:
An excellent remake of the original, sure to make the original Valve designers jealous. Really good work!

It's a pretty hard choice, so I'll start rampantly disqualifying stuff in a 2-minute time span:

"Labirint" is gone because as nice a aim map as it is, it can't hold up to the excellent, full-size MP maps from January.

Unfortunately imo, the same goes for Black Mesa Remake, tho a wicked map in it's own right.

No the really hard part. I could really go for any of the remaining three but like the highlander, there can be only one:

In that case, I disqualify the mario maps in favor of De_kalt, merely because it represents an original, realistic environment, and the mario maps are recreations of an existing theme. (are they modeled after real mario levels, or original creations?)

In any case, my vote goes to de_Kalt

I had to use the "sharpen" filter in PS twice to be able to easily notice the lines... wow either my screen is fucked, my eyes are fucked, or you have bionic color perception! :P

Tycell: If you haven't noticed we're all pretty bored around hear... chomping at the bit to help in anyway we can, for pretty much anyone who needs it. (not that that's a bad thing)

Now I can see how you got such good performance on such a huge map! (I couldn't figure out how you kept the wpolys so low, even when the whole thing is skyboxed)

The way you blended the sky with the water was very believable too, even it the water itself didn't look that good (you can't have it all).

I don't know if this is the right place for these as I'm not sure if they're bugs or by-design. They're also quite pidly/nitpicky, so let me know if you want me to tone down my stream of suggestions of this nature! = )

1. Recent/new posts functionality
-make a link or hidey button where you can expand the recent posts list to a bigger size... say like 10-15.

-Maybe only show the last post and not each recent post to a thread (this way your not looking a 5 posts from the same thread in "new posts" (not sure about this but putting it out there)

2. Put a pm link to map vault moderators in map vault table of contents, and maybe moderator PM links for the PM table of contents (redundant, but might be ok)

3. PM inbox
  • change the design to differentiate old/new messages like colors or what not.
4. Make the hyperlink text in threads bolder or bigger than normal text. I also miss the brown color, but that's me...

And yeah, I agree I'd have been better off starting with a more-manageable first project. It's not that anything is particularly difficult, but there are so many details to consider... The good thing though is I'm learning a lot and getting quite comfortable with the interface, which is the point I guess!
