Enjoy your week-long holiday away from TWHL.

Alright, I've got the textures off Hunter. I'll be adding a few more to it, such as doors, lights and so on. General industrial is the theme, and I think there'll be plenty of textures to get something really unique from everyone. Should be up by the weekend.

You're lucky I haven't quit by myself.
Nobody is stopping you. I don't get your attitude at all. You've attacked everyone who has dared to say anything against your perfect vision, and then treated us like the children for feeling insulted. You're on thin ice with the admins here, to say the least.

Don't cry you pussies. Learn to empty your god damn clouded mind and accept the truth.
You're now disqualified from this compo and lucky you're not banned altogether. There's a big difference between making a suggestion, and outright insulting anyone who doesn't agree with what you want. You are the most arrogant, ignorant and self-entitled member we've had here in a while. The texture pack idea has been tossed around for a while now, and is the most popular, but ultimately this competition is up to us.
Anyways, guess it won't be very thematic but who cares.
I think I'm going to try and narrow the theme down a bit with a couple more industrial textures. Doors, metal floors, rusty panels etc. I think Archie's textures will work well with that idea, if we put aside some of the ones that don't fit.

If you really feel the need to scale the textures down, go ahead. Just don't alter them in any way.
We should make sure to have lights and water and all that jazz too.
I also agree that lights and water are necessary. And a glass texture? And doors even for source.
Good point, we'll knock some together.

Most excellent!

I've dug up about 5-10 suitable textures I can add to the pack (plaster walls, metal floors, tiles), so I'll get those up to scratch. PM me a link whenever you're ready, and we'll get the rules up.

Nice work, Archie.
We'll definitely use them, but I might take the variations out of it to keep it's a bit more broad, like so:
User posted image
Send them all anyway, I'd like a good look at them. I also have a few similiar textures of my own I can throw in there to make up the numbers, so this will work out well, I think. A general industrial theme is pretty vague, and would require some effort to make it unique, and I like that.

Are there normal maps to suit? If not, don't worry, I can give them a cheat run through CrazyBump and get something close enough.

Is everyone okay with Penguinboys time frame? 2 months seems pretty fair.

EDIT: Just so I know when I'm making the WAD, is 256x256 pretty much the GldSrc standard these days?

Alrighty then, it's clearly about time for a new competition. The last time we voted on what to do we were left with some ideas for the next competition, so I think to make it easy we'll start with one of those.

The two ideas people seemed to like the most were the 1024 Cube Space, and the Map From Texture Pack ideas. 1024 would be the easiest to get going straight away, but the texture competition was the most popular. So, I'm after your votes, but remember this:
  • The 1024 competition means you are limited to a 1024x1024x1024 mapping space. You cannot go anywhere outside that, or have anything other than a skybox that goes outside that, whether you can reach it or not. The theme is otherwise completely up to you, so there's a lot you can do with this one. It would have to be designed as a functioning map, deathmatch most likely.
  • The texture competition would mean we need to find a suitable texture pack to use, one that was designed for Source first (with any bump maps etc.), that we can then make into a WAD for Goldsource users. If you vote for this, and can recommend a good texture pack (or contribute to one), let me know. Size and theme are up to you, but you'll be more limited with what you can do because of the available textures. This could probably be a deathmatch or a singleplayer map.
  • Feel free to suggest a new idea, it could be popular.
Like the last competition, Source and Goldsource will be judged together, and we'll be judging on how well you use each engine, and how well you stick to the guidelines.

From what I've been reading they only pulled in a group of big-name CS:S players to test it, no 1.6'ers, and they aren't adding any of features that keep 1.6 players on that game. One of the playtesters even mentioned that they were playing on reworked versions of the original CS:S maps, only moved over to a newer engine and slightly spruced up.

I know I should wait and see, but it's sounding pretty mild so far. More like Counter-Strike: Source: Deluxe Edition than a massive, new Counter-Strike 2, which I'd really prefer.
Also, Gabe has said repeatedly that ep3 will never exist. Valve abandoned episodic content. Half-Life 3 is going to be a full-length game, and of course they're working on it.
They said they've given up on the episodic game model, because they're terrible at it, but it's hardly an indication that Episode Three is dead. It would feel strange jumping right into Half-Life 3 before the Half-Life 2 story has reached it's climax. But then again, it is Valve, so who knows.

I really miss Valve's monolithic games. There's less and less of a 'jump' between titles, and arguably a lot less innovation (Portal 2 being one exception). Their "games as a service" philosophy is nice and all, and they're easily a lot more generous than most developers, but it feels like it's diluting their work at the same time.

Ah, I found out about that patch a good 6 hours into the game. Luckily I'm not running into any game-breaking bugs, and all the positives about the game are eclipsing any bugs that do pop up. I hate Activision even more so now for forcing this game out the door way too early.
I mainly liked MGS2 because it was the most like MGS1. I prefer my radar and basic sneaking to the jungle shenanigans or the magic octocamo in MGS4.
I really liked all of the Big Shell moments in MGS2, but the moment you get to Arsenal and the story turns all batshit... it lost me.

Heh, I thought MGS2 was the weakest, though it's mostly just the last few hours I don't like. MGS3 is actually my favourite, while 1 and 4 are about even for me.
I'm eagerly awaiting the MGS2&3 HD pack (which also has Peace Walker on the console)
Same, even if I already own all the PS games. I just want to play Peace Walker.

Started playing through Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines a week or two ago, and despite being a bit incomplete and glitchy, it's a fantastic Immersive Sim/FPS-RPG, along the lines of Deus Ex or System Shock 2. The writing, plot and voice acting are (generally) awesome, it definitely has some of the most unique and deep characters I've seen from the genre.

The red/blue/green tones are the lighting data, so that would explain why yours isn't showing up properly.

What method are you using to make them? Valve's command line tool is a pain in the ass. Make sure your TGA has an alpha channel and run it through again. Or, do what I do and use SSbump Generator. It gives fairly similiar results to Valve's tool.

Derp, just read the bottom of the original post. Are you running heightmaps or normal maps through the generator? If it's a heightmap you'll have to tick "Heightmap" and "Create Normal Map". Alternatively, get CrazyBump and make your normal map with that, and then run it through the generator, it gives you incredible control over the minute details in your normal map.

Care to post a picture of the actual ssbump texture? And is there any particular reason why you're using the mathfix paramater? There's an annoying lack of information on it, and I've never had to use it. I think it was introduced in the L4D2 engine branch, might not have any effect in the Orange Box version.

That might apply for well-prepared studio photography, but any decent digital should be able to give good results in any lighting condition (you know, save for absolutely ridiculous weather nobody would shoot in anyway).

I have no comment on whatever camera you're looking at, it may well be a decent camera, and suit you fine. That's great, but you seem to be making a point that ideal lighting first-and-foremost controls a shot (and thus, any old camera will do). That is pretty short-sighted. You can find gold in uninviting places, if you have it in you and your tools are at least up to the task.

For example, some of the best macro photography I've seen was shot in dreary, overcast conditions because the camera was then able to get more detail and texture out of the shot in such unspectacular, blanketed lighting conditions people otherwise wouldn't even consider.

Nobody has any idea where you're going with this, Crollo.
Perhaps you shouldn't have done it in the first place. Always distrust the system! After all, someone like you knows how it works. Why do you think I run away from online banking?
I'm a very private guy myself, but staying away from online banking? Seems a bit paranoid.

Seeing some of the reactions from this around the web makes me wonder what people actually know about the services they subscribe to. People have their details stored online for so many these days, it's a massive part of how we live. Bank accounts, home loans/personal loans, automatic bill payments, eBay, Amazon, iTunes, Steam, or any other online stores... and any one of those could be compromised by hackers, if they were determined enough, or from one employee mistake.

Sony messed up, sure. They were slow and their security wasn't exactly up to snuff, but the same thing could definitely happen to others. Encryption can be cracked. Living in fear of identity theft or fraud isn't something I want to do, it's a threat you face just from using these services.

Just keep a close eye on your shit, and report anything suspicious. Shit just happens sometimes.

I'm one of the people hit by this, but I'm not particularly worried. Already changed my passwords, and if I have to, I'll order a new card (though this data was encrypted, and they never got the security codes).

The rest of the info they got is pretty easily obtainable over the internet these days, especially with social network sites. I'll just have to keep an eye out for phishing, not too hard. Banks are pretty good when it comes to reversing fraudulent activity.

Sony will cop it hard for this, it was a nasty blunder, but I can't wait for the hacker(s) to cop it worse. Whatever faith I had in Sony or the Playstation isn't really shaken, just inconvenienced at this point.
Gotta say I was planning to get one after I get rid of my crappy 360, but I think I'll give it a miss now.
