I am trying to create a rock or a mountain type brush like the ones in dust2 but when i clip it it says it is an 'invalid object' just wondering how i can stop this?

Manipulate the vertices manually instead. See the VM tutorials for details.

Use triangle VM (I've got an example on it) instead of clipping brushes.
