To all entrants of Compo 13:

I have just found my notes on all your maps (they were right by my left leg). Let me know here if you'd like to see them.

SlayerA:

Originality

Remarkable in construction, but fairly apparently-ordinary to the common-or-garden player.

Architecture

Some nice curving corridors and some big open stuff.

Texturing

Suitable and varied-ish.

Lighting

Decently bright, if not hugely artistic.

Entity work

Quite fiendish.

Impression

Really quite mad. Allowed the lift number effect, though.

Overall

A pretty unique map, to my knowledge.

doodle:

Originality

Original stuff. Nothing mindblowingly so, but certainly new.

Architecture

Wow! A huge cow! Very nice.

Texturing

A little plain in parts.

Lighting

Rather flat.

Entity work

Kept getting stuck under a platform with a trigger_push. Steam things're all one entity?

Impression

Very nice brushwork. Nice spinnin' Steam logos, too. Very good.

Overall

Very nice brushwork, and some nice bright colours, if a little weak in places.

Unbreakable:

Originality

Ingenious use of the HOM for a motion blur effect. Lots of other good stuff, but I can't remember it offhand and couldn't make a note of it at the time due to getting stuck in places and levelchange failures!

Architecture

Rather plain (at least in the bits I could get to).

Texturing

Some excessively-agressive NULL texturing causing HOMing in the plain world. Rather <something: illegible :)> black thing.

Lighting

Bit plain.

Entity work

Level changes didn't seem to work. Spent about ten minutes running around a room trying to get out when there wasn't anything else in the map.

Impression

The fact that none of the levelchanges worked made it rather less coherent than it might otherwise could have been. A bit disjointed.

Overall

Some good stuff, and some dodgy stuff, tied together completely incomprehensibly.

Rubbish, the map was brilliant when you first designed it over a year ago. I have not seen anything since that covered the same stuff.
I especially liked the entrance corridor ;)

Me! Me too.

Public is ok, and was wondering, would it be possible to post all the entrant's maps, for those--SlayerA--who did not put them in the vault?

Andy, is it alright to post links to the maps in situ on this server?

trapt:

Originality

Pretty original ? for the engine, at least.

Architecture

Some excellent VMing for terrain (again ;)).

Texturing

A little plain, and, for the volcano 'lava', dowright strange.

Lighting

Well, it's lit.

Entity work

I didn't notice any particularly amazing entity trickery.

Impression

Starts excellently, but gets a little strange toward the end.

Overall

Doesn't appear to be completable. Very pretty, though.

Kasperg:

Originality

Wow. Sickeningly, stunningly surreal. Love it.

Architecture

A little on the square side in parts, with some slightly odd scaling.

Texturing

Lack of NULL textures on some glass sides looked a little strange. Double door textures on single doors.

Lighting

A little unsubtle. Could have been more atmospheric in parts.

Entity work

The boat below was impressive, but the parallax showed its true distance. So was the blurring of Breen, and the race ? plus, of course, the slightly strangely-made ShoutBOX with the moving brushes :).

Impression

The progress bar, wow. Why did nobody think of that before? Great stuff.

Overall

Really nice. The ShoutBOX actually made me laugh out loud. The final path was really surreal, too. By far my favourite.

rowleybob:

Originality

Yay! Transformers! Very nice.

Architecture

Largely on the blocky side, but I must say, the window part things look axcellent, as do the 'bots.

Texturing

A little lazy. Could have used some custom textures.

Lighting

None?

Entity work

Well-arranged. You could jump on bits that I don't think you were meant to be able to, though.

Impression

Nice splash things. Bit like Kasperg's, actually.

Overall

Pretty nice, but again, unconnected and short.

Thanks very much for teh notes/feedback!

Did you not get the erroneous errors I had mentioned in the readme?

It may be because my .dlls were not updated, because after I updated mine -thanks to Trapt's entry that included them-, I've found all the sequences run fine , and now the chapter message is actually showing up--'Ho Ho HOOOO'--, which was only intended for testing purposes. :P

Is this a lesson to all the naughty people, who still use the WON version, that it's time to repent and use steam?

howcome?? i think that the competition should be split into hl1, and hl2 mods, thats soo not fare.. i atleast wanted to see what u guys thought of my map! they should be the same compo. just divided into 2 categories.. hl1/hl2+mods.. >:(

I think you are right rat808. If I will post a opposing-force/gunman/blue-shift map will It be disqualifaid? :
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-24 02:58:47 UTC Post #110672
Yes....

standard HL1 only.

The rules specifically stated "HL1 only". All Source maps were disqualified.

Read the competition rules. They tell you.

The Source maps were discarded immediately.

VOX, yours had some nice detail on the windows, etc., but it was a bit... plain overall. The G-men were nice, but it was too dark to see 'em properly. You shoulda made it lighter and smaller, and put more stuff in it (some stained glass with volumetric light, etc.).

your compos really suck! if you ever had an hl2 compo you would see groundbeaking things and mind blowing environments! hl1 compared to hl2 is like comparing a 1920's lawnmower to a 2005 saleen. its just not the same. i guess when you guys are ready for change you will make a new compo, and come into the 21st century.
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-24 17:59:29 UTC Post #110751
Keeping compos at a single HL version evens the playing field. Competitions are meant to push your imagination, creativity, and attention to detail. There are so any ways to push the HL1 code, which leaves a lot of room for original and wild effects and player circumstances.

Remember that there is a lot of time spent on this site. The competitions are an extra that is thrown in when someone sees a glimpse of available time. Running and judging two comps at once would leave no time for real world responcibilities.

This site provides a place for you to place your completed maps and ask for opinions. TWHL is a great resource for help, new ideas, and opinions. Just do not get the attitude.

Comp requirements are always posted with enough detail to know what is expected. Face it, there has to be guidelines to maintain a level playing field.
Posted 18 years ago2005-05-24 18:05:31 UTC Post #110753
Not everyone has HL2 either

And you, Sir, are an idiot.

Maybe if you could read, you wouldn't have bothered posting a map which the rules clearly state would be disqualified.

The idea of a Source compo is being discussed, I've been told, now stop acting like a jerk just because you can't read.

(also note that your avatar is stupid, and really not funny)

Holy shit, Skeeve! Welcome back...

rat808...you fool. Keep in mind that HL2 wouldn't exist without HL1. Besides, and correct me if I'm blatantly wrong, isn't TWHL focused predominately on HL1?
