Yo,
how do you make water with the HL2 engine???
Posted 19 years ago2005-05-16 04:48:20 UTC Post #109699
Simple

make a brush
texture it all with nodraw
texture top with a water texture
and presto!

That's not quite all: you'll need a water_lod_control and a cubemap to get the fancy reflective stuff. Clicky. Remember to always take a look at the SDK Documentation.

ive got a major problem with that.. i do everything to a T, I make the brush, cover it in nodraw, stick a water texture on top, stick a Lod in, stick a cubemap in, pick the water for the cubemap, compile the map, build the cubemap in the console and STILL nothing shows up.. the water is there when you jump in but you can't see the water from the outside, you can just see through the no draw on the sides, wats goin on?!

Yo need a full succesful compile for water to work properly.
By the way, cubemaps have nothing to do with water reflection to my knowledge.
Reflectivity is given by the water texture you apply. For example, dev_water3_exp will show up as expensive water and as such will have full reflections.

I noticed that leaks, fast compile etc will not show water up!

Yeah. I imagine not running VIS will stop water being drawn too (expensive water, at least).

As for the cubemaps thing, I suggest you look at the example in the SDK and follow their lead. I can't remember it off-hand.

i didn't have a problem with water reflectivity but can u make it so that u can walk through it?
Posted 19 years ago2005-05-19 02:24:48 UTC Post #110068
What you mean, "Walk on it". What like jesus?

Erm, it should be passable by default?

You can turn it to a func_water_analog, which I find helps sometimes.

im just about ready to cry. I've tried everything! compiling, checking for leaks and the above stuff that i've already mentioned. It just doesn't want to work!! either there is something completely F***ed up with my hammer or there is still something i'm forgetting. I have even saved the SDK example map under a different name and compiled it and it doesn't show up :zonked: christ the nitty noobie things that i can't suss out sometimes! grrr

Kasperg, I'm following the SDK documentation.
Cubemaps are important to use with water surfaces. On lower than DX9 level video cards, it is not possible to render the real-time reflective water shader. For these cards, an env_cubemap entity provides the pre-calculated environment map use to render water on sub-DX9 cards.

Did the water work in HL2?
