Steinen said in his journal that he doesn't map for Half Life and doesn't play Half Life anymore because its overplayed. That included all the mods. When's the last time you actually played Half Life?

I've neither mapped nor played any HL games for quite a long time. I play CS:S every week or so for a few hours with a friend, usually. I might enter the next competition if it's an HL1 one :).

I mean Half Life as in the Half Life engine, sorry should have clarified.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-19 03:21:13 UTC Post #121954
Well, it depends on what you mean by "playing half-life". I think I havent played any of the games or mods since december. Of course, I have revisited a lot of the SP maps (mainly to show the game to my friends) and checked the new multiplayer maps (both in hl2dm and CS:S).
And it's not just playing: in july 2004 I made 7 HLDM maps, and now I'm occasionaly working on my Source Compo entry

Half Life:
Half Life
Opposing Force
Blue Shift
DMC
TFC
NOT COUNTER STRIKE, CS DOES NOT COUNT
all official HL1 engine based games is what I mean.

ok... I played HLDM last August and played Opposing Force once again (cant really remember when...), but all of this was before HL2 came out.

Nahhh I only map for Hl1 and as I'll finish this compo and my house I'll move to opposing-force! :) :sarcastic: Anyway I can't anjoy Hl1 any more for I allways find something bad(like bad artecture) to annoy me! I can still enjoy opfor cause they it's better!(in many ways) :glad:

I've basically been using Zombieloffe's evil server to play all the Star Wars games, plus other sites ;)

I'm afraid I've been warped to the Source side .... ever since I got my new PC I haven't even had HL1 installed......at least 6 months since I played, probably more.

any reasons why you people hate source?

Source,Hl2 same thing! Both based on the same engine! :P And both are boring! :aggrieved:
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-21 14:40:17 UTC Post #122530
Source is an engine, HL2 is a game based on an engine.

Okay, HL2 might have been boring, but how is the engine boring? Have you looked into the entity sets? The code? The materials system? It's extremely interesting.

I agree with Kasperg - What's wrong with the engine? If I had an old Pentium computer that couldn't run HL1 very well, that automatically makes HL1 crap?

Source and all those props and models feel so soulless. Oh well, I guess that's the deal with every other modern engine as well (D3, U2.) :
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-21 14:46:46 UTC Post #122532
The base prop set is quite unoriginal over and over and over in HL2 maps, but that's where custom mods come in. Most of teh D3 maps I've seen are using the same tex set and they all look like original Doom3.

I think my point still stands. Source is a very powerful and interesting engine. Don't knock it for powering HL2.

all those props and models feel so soulless
But you dont have to use them if you dont want to :) You could still make a source map like you did with the HL engine. I actually think that props are a nice addition, and much better than prefabs cough
-Cubemaps are ok
-Displacement surfaces are great
-Physics system is nice
-Entity trigger system is way superior

Troika raped the source engine when they made Bloodlines. It's such a laggy game, but still fun
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-21 16:42:34 UTC Post #122576
I've never played HL, but I did make a few maps for it. Maybe eventually I'll get around to play it, when I am not so busy working anymore (and before the honeymoon).

August looks promising...

Source is a good engine, but all of the games/mods based on it suck right now. The only one that looks promising to me is Black Mesa: Source.
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-21 17:05:01 UTC Post #122583
Source is barely out... how can you expect any good mods so fast?

I found that Eclipse to be quite well executed for it's time. The really good mods are yet to come.

All in all, I like the Source engine, and I like the entity set of Half-Life 2 over that of Half-Life. Luckily I've been modelling for Half-Life, so the transition to do more modelling shouldn't be too hard for me. I think the reliance on models is one of the most radical chances for the design process, maybe.

and DoD:S
Arrggh! Don't remind me of that one again..
"HL2 GOLD PACK, buy it through STEAM"
Valve is going nuts...
Well,,, I was a bit dissepointed at HL2! Sure, I bet everyone was, after seing those trailers that was released far before the game was released.
( Maby some didn't watch the trailers, but I did )
But that doesn't make source bad.. Source is a good engine, I just don't like that ragdolls passes through (does not collide) with physical objects, like barrels, or, wheels.
Was planing to play around with HL1 for a while, make a "god mod" and change the size of the models and blah blah blah,, does that count as played HL1?

As far as I know, there's a console command for that. It surely is possible but is it worth the extra CPU usage. Personally, I think not.

I am impressed that someone came up with the idea of the ragdoll in the first place. It's a great idea, and it's fairly well implemented.

I could hit a dead corpse with my crowbar all day!

That's cl_ragdoll_collide, making ragdolls collide with each other. It's well worth it.

Because, I imagine, that setting would slow down some machines quite a bit. Just imagine the amount of calculation it requires to figure out collision with more than one phys objects.

Hitting NPC's with the crowbar results in hitting the ground as well. I wish the models had gibs, or visible forms of damage.

They have blood decals based on hit locations, at least the enemies do. And you can't kill your NPC allies, aye D:

Guess the gory SOF2 style damage was a bit too graphic?
