How do i make a box-shaped room without using one simple block? i
have found it absolutely impossible to make a room like that using heaps of blocks because the i always have dimension problems (the brushes just don't fit together properly no matter what i try) so i have to put up with an uneven room.

So your question is how to make a room withoout carving a brush ?
You want to make a room with walls made of several brushes/"blocks" ?

Maybe you could start off by using the carve tool, ungroup the room, and use the clip-tool to make the walls up in the fractions you want.

Rooms, or maps in general are made up of brushes (blocks). you can't really make a map without one unfortunately. If you're having trouble, to start off mapping try making a block (256 cube) and using the "make hollow" command under the Tools menu. Set wall thickness to 16 or something and there you go, you have a perfectly sealed room.

I'd only recommend this technique to get started in mapping, as there's enough to dishearten anyone without adding this in. Practice zooming in and increasing the grid resolution to get full control over brush placement.

Hope this helps.

I see i made a mistake in my previous post, carving should ofcourse be "hollow".

The best en most direct way to make a room is to create a block with the dimensions of the room you want, selecting it, and right-click -> hollow.
Then you'll be asked to define wall-thickness. As Snake-Eyes said 16 is the most desired thickness. (32 is more like a bunker etc)
there you go you have a room.

Sorry i misunderstood your question completly the first time, i thought you wanted to make a room with rock-like un-even walls.

yere but i can understand how much better it is to use many blocks for a block-like room because you can easily manipulate the brushes to make something real complex and interesting (maybe).

Well, just make the walls, floor and ceiling out of seperate brushes.

just make a box basically, then run the ends together, and use the clip tool to clip each corner of each wall diagonally, so they run together. and then you dont have the walls overlapping each other.

i make each brush seperately. its useful wen u start makin more complex maps where theres no room 4 carvin. speakin of carvin, dont do it

brush by brush is a good way to start, but once you start spotting invalid solids from the 2d views you can move on to arches and carving out domes ;)

Well If we proof-read the first post he says he has problems fitting the brushes together.
the brushes just don't fit together properly no matter what i try
It could be grid problems.
Under the map tab there's a couple of options for the grid. If that's the case that is.

i dont understand why hollowing is a sin its alot quicker than making 6 separate brushes and u can ungroup it when its hollow and do whatever u could do with the 6 brushes u just made

Going a little off-topic..
@ministeve, why won't i use the carve tool ? I respect your opinion, but i'd like to hear a technical reason why carving is worse then mapping brush by brush.

I reckon carving is fine with simple brushes. Don't try it with two crazy VMed things or cylinders though :)

Do what you feel comfortable with....
Carving is not recomended for people new to Hammer because of all the errors it can cause. If you don't have any problems, then happy carving.
Same goes for using the Hollow tool.

Make a block wich looks the same on all views x/y, z/y etc then click the red arrow the "selection tool" click the block so it is red then Options -> make hollow and select how thick the walls should be minimum is 2 there you go add the entities "info_player_start" and "light" and feel free to run arround !!!1
