I never heard a reason why someone prefers openGL or software!

In my opinion software looks better(not blurry) but it has tons of bugs like that I managed to see through an entity brush another brush. :nervous:
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 07:38:25 UTC Post #137716
Software looks like crap. It's all blurry.
OpenGL is better, and it runs better.

Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 07:40:13 UTC Post #137719
Software isn't blurry! It's just looks like everything is build out of meny little cubes! :
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 07:42:03 UTC Post #137720
That's what I ment. It looks pixelated, and that makes it bad.

But it's not smughed! :glad:
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 08:18:36 UTC Post #137723
Mine doesnt looked smudged at 1600*1200
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:26:16 UTC Post #137731
OpenGL @ 1600x1200 @ 32-bit is the only proper way to play HL.
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:32:06 UTC Post #137735
I have

-32bit
-OpenGL
-1600x1200

Looks fine for me! OpenGL is smudged! Its just not pixelated! Its called "smooth" and is nice to the eye. The only good thing about Software is the water looks more realistic (But doesnt have fog :( )
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:32:51 UTC Post #137736
w00t! I just got a monitor big enough to do that, and hl really doesn't look much better at that resolution, but hl2 sure does.

19 inches of pure and violent half-life.

Now on the topic, like elon said, software is buggy, and therefore doesn't deserve to be used.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:37:04 UTC Post #137738
Nah, I lie. Mines 17inch and has a max refresh rate of 100 (On low resolution)
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:41:12 UTC Post #137741
Mines 20inch, did have a 2nd monitor at 19inch, but my brother made his explode and I had to give up my 2nd one to him!

Question, can Half-Life be forced past 1600*1200 in OpenGL mode?
I know my hardware can cope, but can Half-life?!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:41:17 UTC Post #137742
Also, software runs shit slow!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 09:42:20 UTC Post #137744
I think mine might have a higher refresh rate than 60, even at 1600x1200, but I haven't been able to get information about it yet (damn dialup!)

And software isn't half bad when that is all that is available to you.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 10:30:47 UTC Post #137755
My dual 24" widescreen Sony Triniton's will do 1600x1200 @ 160hz no problem.
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:04:02 UTC Post #137759
Woah!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:06:10 UTC Post #137761
@m0p: are they crt's? probably, otherwise you wouldn't bother to mention the refresh rate. That's nice!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:12:27 UTC Post #137764
Also, software runs shit slow!
No it doesn't!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:14:49 UTC Post #137765
if software runs slow, then you have a crappy computer. With software mode, allof the graphics processing is done by the cpu. (duh) as well as game logic, so if you have a fast comp, then it should actually be pretty fast!

This thread is dumb, OpenGL pwns Software and you know it, final!

..

Case closed!

I have a good graffix card and adequete RAM, but a very junk proccesor :(
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:18:32 UTC Post #137770
that's why software is slow. Use opengl. or software mode will pwn you.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:18:35 UTC Post #137771
only good thing about Software is the water looks more realistic
:O!!!

software water is HORRIBLE! no waves, barely transparent even on texturemode with ammount 20...

And its pixelated.

OpenGL pwns. End of story.

Trust me, i used software for AGES before igot a better graphics card

I meant the animating water texure looks nice! Instead of just swirling, it looks like it ripples.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:25:53 UTC Post #137776
in opengl, it does ripple!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 11:27:16 UTC Post #137777
Swirls!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 12:23:48 UTC Post #137807
Frag, of course they are CRT's. There was two clues in my post, first, CRT response rate is measured in hertz, not ms, and finally Triniton is a brand of CRT tube.
m0p m0pIllogical.

OpenGL pwns. End of story.
Amen

technically, lcds have a refresh rate too, they never bothered to redesign the hardware, but I can't remember the details. Suffice it to say that I read it somewhere. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Sony, so i'm not "up" on their products. I've got a vaio pcg-k45, good computer, bad laptop. So I don't care about sony.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-27 12:29:32 UTC Post #137813
Software is horrible. Only supports a max of 800 wpolys. That bluriness is called texture filtering and its supposed to do that. Just like in real life how stuff blurs if you get right up to it.

especially when you're drunk :)

OpenGL for teh win I tell ye why!
I played Blue Shift thinking the graphics were shit but it turned out it was set in Software mode HA HA :D

@saribous, if your drunk it wont only become blurry ;) .

OpenGL, of course.

I have been playing OpFor (For my first time lol!) and it totaly owns! I also like the high definition pack!

Opfor totally pwns Hl1! :)

Software doesn't blends the pixels of the textures, and therfore looks hirrible. Also it doesn't render sprites or things such as fence textures correctly, also it messes with your frame rate, making the game look choppy.

OpenGL FTW...

And m0p, dual 24" widescreens? Wtf is wrong with you?

Actually, software does render sprites, but theyre all blocky too.

39 replies and we've all said the same thing...

This thread is pointless. You'd have to be blind to think software is better. I think we have proven this, and this thread is now completely useless.

Closage, thx.

Everyone hasnt spoken yet :P
Software sucks. Badly. D3D is buggy and wont show decals right. OpenGL is the only way to go! No one said that before ;)
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-28 04:10:31 UTC Post #137954
Software lags even on my 1gig RAM 3.2ghz Proccesor 128mg screencard laptop! Well, actualy, its my brother's ^^

OpenGL ftw. Rise up against the D3D Microsoft tyrrany.

My OpenGL stopped working a while ago :

Mine too!
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-28 07:35:13 UTC Post #137975
Use D3D then, even if its Microsoft its still better than software for sure.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-28 16:04:23 UTC Post #138130
OpenGL > D3D > Software

in all cases. either look and see the light, or get glasses so you can at least see.
Posted 19 years ago2005-09-28 16:58:51 UTC Post #138139
Use D3D if your openGL drawer is broken I mean.
