@madcow: you can see the dimensions of a selected brush in the lower right of the Hammer interface. Alternately, while clipping, you can press o to see the dimensions of the clipping sides and such. Maybe that's enough for you?

Either way, those brushes shouldn't give r_speed trouble. As long as the textures on them have the exact same properties, they're combined into one face (though 240 texel splitting still applies, it won't give any different result than one brush would).
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-09 10:43:02 UTC Post #140502
Precisely. Brush splitting has much more impact in the VIS leafthread process than in the actual BSP. Polygons are much more affected by texture scaling. Remember that a surface sacaled with X=2.00 Y=2.00 has 4 times less polygons than a 1.00, 1.00 surface!!

Kasperg: Speak english. :S

Captain P: I never noticed a unit counter, I'll have a look. Thanks! :)

I hate when people stretch there textures!

almost all the textures I use, I usually scale them down to 80 or lower, I never scale the textures above 1.00 unless absolutly nessesary! :D

In big rooms, I sometimes scale floor and ceiling textures to 1.50 , increasing performance without sacrificing looks that much.
But when it comes to terrain editing, using a scale of 2.00 is usually the right thing to do, I'll explain why:
-Like I said, we reduce the number of polygons, which is useful in big outside areas.
-The pattern of the texture becomes less obvious with bigger scaling. If we are working with terrain textures, we DONT want to see the pattern of the textures, it usually looks unnatural.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-09 15:51:58 UTC Post #140551
hmm interesting, i will try that on my hldm map (it has cliffs, texture is 1.00). I'll scale it to 2.00 and see how much r_speeds will drop.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-09 16:29:21 UTC Post #140556
You try to think of a nice elevator with those doors and the struts are 0.80x0.40 or something like that! :nervous: Nothing else is streched!

Also I used the blue textures(unlike kasperg who used common lab texture that Hl1 is full of them) that has mostly only concrate textures and all the metal blue textures are used in that elevator!
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-09 17:17:59 UTC Post #140564
Half-life is also full of your blue lab textures. I doubt a map will be considered better if it has green or blue textures. The important thing is how you use them. And a brush should always have more or less the same X and Y values. Stretched textures look bad, most of the time.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-09 17:23:33 UTC Post #140565
I know that! But I had a few problems with the elevator for I didn't find good textures! Thet aren't streched but scaled very high and the struts are fixed! :) Blue metalic textures aren't so common and the proff is that I haven't found enough textures and I searched alot! :tired:

I made a minimod the time I won! And it's written you must if you have costum stuff in your map! ;)

welcome SEThorian, from what ive heard your a 'oldie on VERC', so im guessing your good, at least compared to some of the people here.

its good to have some compitition for the compititians besides Kasberg, Seventh-Monkey, RabidMonkey, MuzzleFlash, CaptainP, and any of the other estemed mappers here, who sadly don't enter compos alot do to time constraints, like me.

Hey Seth, Muzz here... i mean, Atom... no, TMA! :D
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-10 16:42:00 UTC Post #140776
Heh, I haven't been on the Verc for a long time! (The forums, at least.) After having answered the same question for one or two years, I got tired of it and found other intarweb residences.. ;)

I specially joined the TWHL for this compo as it seemed fun and, like said, a good excuse to get some work done.. :) I've also seen some of the other compo's here (and especially TMA and CP their entrances) but never had the time to join. And now I finally have a good excuse, yay!

In the meanwhile, I hope I'll spend a bit of time around here each week, helping out here and there. (On the forums.) But with school being as it currently is, I cannot make any promises.

Anywhoo; everybody, happy hunting! (Do note that hunting may be replaced with mapping, at your leisure..)

I'll probebly lose this one! :tired: I'm not so exprienced, got a losy elevator and school! :
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-10 18:27:45 UTC Post #140793
But remember, there's always a chance that only three people actually finish their maps, and you could always get a bronze trophy, even if yours is unfinished :)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-10 19:42:23 UTC Post #140799
Very much so true! Even if some of the contestants totally r0x0r b0x0r, there's still the issue of time.

Currently, I don't have an awful lot and still have a few audio problems to tackle. So I'd say people who don't have my similar problems, have a wee bit of an advantage over me.. ;)

Oh bugger that voice acting. It's good quality, but without a sound artist I'm not getting anywhere. Would there happen to be any experienced people on TWHL with experience in sound editing? It all goes well for me until I perform hiss reduction. Gets rid of the hiss, but also creates artifacts and transforms the sound. (Depending on the FFT size.)

Edit: Here's the precise step-plan of what I'm doing:

Step 1: Increasing / decreasing the volume (depending on the situation).
Step 2: Resample to 22050Hz.
Step 2,5: Only applies in certain cases; I mess around with the bandpass to get an effect as if the voice acting is spoken through an intercom.
Step 3: Save as 8 bit mono , unsigned.
Step 4: Hiss reduction (I copy a part where no text is spoken and there's just hiss, and base the hiss reduction on that).

Also I made a long mumbling noise!

There are 10 wav files, each requiring the 4 steps. (The majority of them also require step 2,5.)

Hey seth, nice to see you around here!

Why dont you finish starlabs first ;)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-15 10:49:18 UTC Post #141640
Pepper, you especially should know I'm entering with the Starlabs Test Chamber! :o (Well, that is if school won't get in between.. ;)) I mentioned it on CPCP's forums!

And I'll mail you the sound files as soon as possible! Thanks in advance! :)

Aw, should have none, hereby i stand corrected.

Unfortunately i wont enter, havent even finishd my other entry, i just lack all time to combine it with modeling.

Don't know if i enter too. School is taking most of my time. Last year.. But there will be holidays after few weeks. Hope compo won't finish till then :>

I don't know if I'll enter this one,the idea is boring. :

this is a shot to my heart here. I might not finish both Hostage Situation and this compo by the end of October. sucks for me. If I could have finished my idea it would have had a huge chance at winning
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-23 19:39:04 UTC Post #143263
12 days left... I think the map is going to end up being more than 1 MB, so my everlasting problem of finding a place to host the file will surface once again :(
Taking a look at how this year at university is going on so far, this might be my last compo entry (or any type of map) for a long while. I still need to decide the theme for the next source compo. Please use that thread for suggestions.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 04:14:54 UTC Post #143277
I can host it. I can host anything which people are struggling to find places for.

I can host it for you too.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 07:33:47 UTC Post #143305
I also could host it, so no-body should have a problem!

Is there like an upper file size limit? Because to get the right feel for mine, I've got a rather long introduction...
Think I'm at about 25mb (11mb when zipped) and I haven't even finished with custom sounds and stuff :aghast:
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 08:03:49 UTC Post #143308
25mbs? Did you include rewolf.wad(gunman's wad) for 25 mb is a size of a mod. :

I don't know if I'll join for school is taking alot of my time. I think I'll have tommorow for my self! My idea is so cool. I have a problem with my speaker entity, it says something about that c0a0_start sentence group is bad.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 08:45:53 UTC Post #143318
Nah, didn't include the wad's, well... erm I use -wadinclude because I think that just picks out only the textures you've actually used.

I might not finish it for the compo :nervous: too much custom stuff me thinks!
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 08:48:50 UTC Post #143319
Try not to use to much custom content. 25/11 MB for just a single test chamber map is little over the top.
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 09:23:49 UTC Post #143329
If I don't have the content, I don't have a story and if I don't have a story then all I do have is a useless chamber with stuff happening for no apparent reason... :

In todays world of fast computers and fast internet, surely 11-25mb isn't going to be a problem. ?!
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 09:48:37 UTC Post #143333
11MB seems alright to me, if a little above-average. Don't let it get much bigger, though.

Posted 19 years ago2005-10-24 13:38:13 UTC Post #143376
And people, please stop saying that your idea is the best, so cool or whatever but you won't have time to finish it. EVERYONE has something else to do in life other than mapping, and you're not the only one with problems.
As a matter of fact, part of being a good mapper or contestant is having the ability to find time to work on your idea, even if it seems impossible.
This isn't about "who's the super l337 mapper with the most OMG best idea!!". It's about reading the theme, thinking up a map, and getting it done.

(sorry if I sound angry, I just came home from class after 5 hours. The bad thing is that only 40 mins of those 5 hours have been class. The rest has been wasted in transportation, waiting for the teacher to arrive, etc)
Posted 19 years ago2005-10-28 09:18:23 UTC Post #144142
Sad news, for me anyway, is that I won't be able to enter this compo afterall. I've had a few technical setbacks as well as time on my back. With midterms coming up, I won't be having the time to implement all the entities (assuming for a second I manage to solve those technical problems) so there shall be no entry from my side. (Which I find to be a great pity.)

Regardless; good luck to those who are still in the race; may the best man win!
