By now everyone has noticed the new steam setup...

so, what do you think of it?

I like it, cause I don't have to have too many windows open. Plus its all spiffy...

The layout wastes way too much space.

Yeah, that's true Rabid.

Still, its a fresh look that doesn't use more resources than the old version, so I'm satisfied. Now, where's the silver version...

I wish there is a way to make it smaller to conserve precious desktop real estate.

In addition, there are occasional bugs. I had the phrase "refreshing games" superimposed on the list of games. It's only a cosmetic issue, but it should never have happened in the first place.

I like it a lot. You can make it smaller by hitting the, well, make-it-smaller button on the top right. I like the new look and new organization.

It feels a bit buggy now and then though, giving a few messages that games need to be updated while I can just play them...
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-13 10:25:21 UTC Post #141257
Well, since its new it will probably take a while to get rid of all the bugs... you can never get a program right the first time.. even after release...

I like the lay out much more than the last one.
I want it to be big, you like, have more control over it.

Whats so good about steam? I only heard it can cause alot of problems if it's not carefully installed and configured and that it updates automaticly!
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-13 12:07:07 UTC Post #141283
great, now I have to wait 5 extra seconds to launch it, clic on "games" to stop the damn bandwidth waste with the new awesome "shop" screen I don't give a f#ck, and "start a new game" to have the servers list (otherwise it's isn't displayed, no matter the times I click on and restart steam), and at last all servers look like to have -5 ping displayed (if they were say 70 in the last version, they now are "65", reading the list), and +10 ingame (I join, I see "65", am like "woohoo, let's enjoy some rounds !", then the ping goes to 85, and stay aroud, "aah crap !") ...

and in addition I heard some guys working on mods cannot anymore ...

I didn't asked about it,
+no real improvements

just pure shit sorry ...

It looks very nice.

But it's very fucked up to use to be honest.

Not everything works also..

But it's new and different so. Time.. Time..

But even after it's shrunken, it still takes up 1/3 of my screen, and I run at 1024x768.

I like things small and functional. Pretty graphics just don't do it for me.

Why are you playing the games available through Steam anyway, then? ;)

Use the command line, foo.

When I start HL1 via a shortcut or the command line, it refuses to load up the game on the first try. I can bypass this problem only by starting HL1 through Steam.

I don't have the same problem for HL2.

sure, once ok,

but 20+20+20+20+20+20+etc= a lot !!

Steam is already totally useless for me (I just use it to play and map CS 1.6), but wtf each update look like to make that shit a bit slower to load : what the hell do I care about the "store" and the new shit "about to be released" (already announced three monthes ago) that won't run on my comp ? what the hell do I care about a new skin ? why the hell do I have to "connect to steam" to play solo campaigns and online games released ages before it ? :| ...

To all Steam bashers, please STFU. Steam is buggy/slow for YOU. I use Steam, and it's fine. Game/platform updates are flawless and utilize my connection very well. If you complain about slow updates, it's either because your computer, and/or you connection is terrible. The interface hasn't got any bugs, in my experience, and bugs in the games themselves are usually driver related (for example, the latest ATi Catalyst drivers), OS related or sometimes hardware related. The only user created errors in HL2 I have experienced are due to exceeding entity limits in Gmod, or errors in homemade maps.

The new interface is much more polished than the old one, has no bugs so far. And while it's rather bloated, surely even the stupidest user could work out how to use the narrow version of the games list.

Wow! If m0p doesn't bitch about it (a Windows app.) then there's really nothing to complain about. I think this warrants the use of this emoticon:

Well, it works flawlessly under Unix with Cedega and WINE, so it's obviously worthy of my approval.

Hmm, I still don't really like it that much, I preferred the old Steam.

The new layout sucks balls. I've already said the same on the Steam forums, however I didn't exactly say it in those words. They could have at least included a compatable skin that looked like the old Steam you know?

Its huge, it takes up too much space even when I switch it to the mini menu and it takes longer to load the games now.
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-14 23:34:08 UTC Post #141561
i don't care how much space it takes up, its not like its going to always be the top window. and if your useing a game through it, its not like steams size is going to get in the way of a full screen app.

and as long as i can use HL2 and (hopefully) the source SDK with it. im fine with whatever they do
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-14 23:35:55 UTC Post #141562
I just don't like how the games are catigorized, installed and uninstalled are not very useful groups, especially when It's grayed out if it's not installed. Kinda repetitive. I would like to make my own groups instead.

Its gets extremely annoying having to resize the menu to where I like it every time I bring it up.
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-14 23:59:27 UTC Post #141566
why do you care? you open up steam to play a game or use Hammer 4, both of them can be moved to be on top of steam. and steam can be minimized when its not in use. its like any other program in the world
Posted 18 years ago2005-10-15 00:52:47 UTC Post #141567
And when I close or minimize the menu the next time I bring it up it full sized again.
I rest my case.

You can sort the games by name, type, producer, and what have you... the custom group idea is nice, but there's already some ways to organize them so it's not that bad. ;)

they only bug that really bothered me was friends, that could use some improvement, but other than that, i think it looks like a nice, hl2 look.

I liked the old version better. It was smaller and more simple. The only window I ever have open is the Games window. I liked it square cause it fit nicely into the corner of my screen. I wonder if theyll let us have a classic skin :
