For some reason, this error happens when i am compiling. It never happened before, this is the error:
  • Could not execute the command:
Copy File "C:Program FilesSteamSteamAppsmark187killacounter-strikecstrikemapssurf_frank"
  • Windows gave the error message:
"Access is denied."

Any tips on how to fix this? And btw I have no Valve file, it's just a Steam file, then everything else in it. Does it matter if the Steam file is inside the Valve folder or if it is just a Steam folder?
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:28:36 UTC Post #145130
Odd you don't have a valve folder but that shouldn't affect the copy file line.

First possibility: The path as shown is incorrect or the surf_frank file doesn't exist or the surf_frank file is write-protected.

Second possibility: a copy command needs a "from" file and a "to" file. The command as given above only has 1 parameter (the "from" file).

Check your configuration against the tutorial.
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:46:25 UTC Post #145134
I compared the tutorial and what I had and they are the same, and it still doesn't work...I don't understand why, I always use those configurations, but then i reinstalled Steam, and now it doesn't work.
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:52:08 UTC Post #145136
Is it really called "surf_frank.bsp" or "surf_frank.bsp[m].[/m]" or something? That copy command appears to have only one parameter.

My map is called "surf_frank".
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:55:07 UTC Post #145138
Strange. Have you updated all the path references in Hammer if necessary?

Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:55:48 UTC Post #145139
I think so. After I reinstalled Steam I redid all the configurations. And made sure they were all right.
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 16:59:26 UTC Post #145140
I got this problem a while back. It seemed like Hammer couldn't find my compile tools even when I specified the right paths. I think I might have mixed the tools (versions) together. I downloaded and reinstalled the most recent set of tools and that fixed the problem.
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 17:00:55 UTC Post #145141
Oh, I just installed all of my tools yesterday, and some today. And the path that it is missing is my maps file. Could I just put the maps in a different folder and move them to my maps file manually?
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 17:10:00 UTC Post #145142
I think you mean 'directory'. Yes, that would work fine.

ok, i tried that twice and it still didnt work, then i tried a new map to see if something was wrong with surf_frank, and that one didnt work either. and i have compiled that one before. something must be wrong with my compiler.
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-03 17:45:15 UTC Post #145150
I doubt seriously there's anything wrong with your compiler.

If you reinstalled steam, perhaps you now have a valve folder. The default path should be something like:

"c:program filesvalvesteamsteamapps<your steam logon>(etc.)"

Double- and triple-check your setup, no matter how sure you are that it's correct. The copy command you posted above is incorrect (obviously) in some way.

The error with the copy command has nothing to do with steam, BTW. It only launches a DOS command to copy a file. Nothing to do with the compiler and nothing to do with steam (except for the directory setup).

Does the rest of your compilation log indicate everything else is working?

Post the entire log file. That could very well reveal a wider problem.

What on earth have you done? That's completely screwed. Have you switched the compile front-end to Expert and clicked things at random? Read the setup tutorials.

Your setup is pretty well screwed up, it appears.

You have at least 5 "Copy file" commands before any are needed and no compiling commands at all.

The tutorials are a bit unorganized but note the order of the commands in picture of the command sequence in http://twhl.co.za/tutorial.php?id=35

Read through any and all of the tutorials describing Hammer and/or CS setup.

When you press F9 to compile, click on the Expert button and see that what you have looks like the setup in the referenced tutorial.

You now have 5 "change directory" commands in a row. You apparently still have not configured your commands as shown above.

Does your panel look exactly like the picture above (except for the Half-Life:CStrike config)?
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-04 18:59:20 UTC Post #145345
Yes it does, it looks the same except for the name of the checked parts underneath the Half-Life:CStrike config.

Brush #: 0
but it said that they dont exist

Just look for a brush entity with the SKY texture applied to it.

Delete all brushes with the sky texture on them, rebuilt them. I've heard somewhere you need to do it and it's not enough to turn the brush back to world again. :tired:

Well I believe that means, you have brush entities outside the skybox...Perhaps parts of your map are accidently tied to entities...

In Hammer, there's a Go To Brush Number option in the menu. Fill in the brush numbers you see in that long error report and it'll take you to those brushes (one number at a time ;)). You've likely messed them up with vertex manipulation or carving. Recreating those brushes and doing it good this time is probably the best solution.

That error occures when you have to many dynamic lights close to eachother. I believe the maximum number of dynamic lights you can have close to eachother, is 3 (!). I know, its just an engine limitation.

Dynamic lights are lights with custom light styles, like flikkering and strobing lights, but also lights that can be toggles on and off. Also, nameing light entities can cause this error. Here are a couple of fixes:
  • Remove some dynamic lights
  • Do not name lights that are just static.
  • Make sure that dynamic light 1 is not allowed to "see" other dynamic lights in its "eye range" When the actual light of 3 or more dynamic lights "touch" eachother, you'll get that error.
I know, techy. Read more about this error at Tommy14's.

Why are people still pointing to Tommy's? He worked on the far nicer Leak-Free, jab people to that instead :|.

True.
It would have been much better if you could search error, if they used a database or something..

Post it to problem maps and I'll try compiling it to rule out config problems on your end.

K. First thing is read the compile log--The thing that pops up after you compile, natrually.

It says:

Check the file c:program filesvalve hammer editormapssurf_frank.log for the cause.

So then you go to that file an it says:

hlcsg: Error: Entity 61, Brush 0: SKY brushes not allowed in entity

hlcsg: Error: Brush type not allowed in entity

So Then, I go into Hammer and go to: Map/Go to Brush #/ and put entity # 61 in there and hit enter. That got me nothing, but it's important to mention because sometimes It's one brush messing you up.

So Next step, I hit the ever-famous Alt-p to bring up "Check for problems menu....and got a host of errors--mostly invalid textures because you didn't include your .wad file(s) you were using.

So my advice would be to work on those errors and let us know how you did. At least try fixing them yourself using the entity guide, tutorials, and forum search before posting another question, please.

Good Luck!

Btw, include any custom sounds, models, textures, sprites, etc. when you upload your map for troubleshooting, unless they're all standard.

Edit: I just deleted your 2 ambient_generics and your map compiled/ran. There is a good place to start!
