Well it's out, and i gotta say i'm severely dissapointed. It really feels like Infinity Ward have taken a step backwards - like the gameplay has become more linear and controlled.. It just doesn't feel like a war. The nice graphics just hide the rather dull game. The first missions feel just like a rehash of the COD1 russian campaign. Who's played it? Opinions?

Well i havent played COD2 but i have a mate that plays the COD games alot and he says that COD2 is worse than COD1, before it came out he said to me that it would be 10x better than hl1 and 2 combined but now hes re thinking that

I've seen some movies and it looks kinda sweet.
I noticed a few stupid things though.
For example:
A ship was on fire, so all dudes pon board ran of to land, exept one dude, who walked!
He walked normaly (exept that it looked like he had been shot in the leg)
While the other guys jumped of the ship and then died.
The AI also seems a bit dodgy too (I bet that fire scene was scripted)
As in the old CoD, or in pasific assault, the AI stands up somethimes while experiencing hevy fire.

I'm going to try the demo now. :)

Scripting and linearity aren't bad for these games people. Scripting ensures everyone will experience the impressive elements of the game, though it removes some replayability value, the first time you see them they're often really good (if done right of course). Linearity gives the player a direction to follow, a goal more or less. Too much freedom can get pretty confusing in such games.

After playing most of the levels now I really think CoD II is a good improvement on CoD. It doesn't rely on new weapons or puzzles or such, essentially it's the same gameplay: gunning down enemies, blowing up vehicles.
But it's worked out better than the original. The graphic overhaul means there's larger terrains available and those allow for some much less linear levels (the first few levels are somewhat linear but later levels are often more free, letting you pick your objectives in the order you prefer). The Russian levels looked much less repetetive now and also later levels had a much better feeling to them.

All in all, I expected just 'more-of-the-same' but it's actually improved 'more-of-the-same' and just as intense as playing CoD for the first time, if not more. I like it so far. I haven't checked out the MP and I'm not planning to do so either unless there's a lan some day, but the SP campaign is worked out nicely. Nothing groundbreaking but well executed nevertheless.

The AI is so bad, it ruens almost everything!
And the game itself is just,, crap!

Why is everyone so uptight about AI. I actually never really notice smart or cumb enimies. It seems like everygame boasts it (COD, Halo, Halflife, Pariah, the list goes one...) in any game i played, never seen a smart one.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-12 06:04:17 UTC Post #146758
Well that's true, you can't possibly have perfect enemies, although the creators of COD2 bragged alot on "How great and advanced the enemy AI is.", so that's why people criticize them now..
Although I think that I'll download the demo.
Just in case.. ;)

it really is nothing impressive in terms of gameplay the graphics are technically brilliant but that's not what's important is it!? In terms of freedom - the most choice i had is choosing whether to go through a door, or the whole blown in the wall next to it. Your right Captain P about the latter levels being better (the american campaigns opening stage is good) but its not consistent, i had to fight through the boring russian and brittish campaigns to find 1 good level!

Want good AI?
Play F.E.A.R.
I just played the demo and I admit, it's better than HL and HL2 together.
Still like them though. :)

still think OFP got the best AIs out there.
theyre really living up to theyre role, officers deciding flank attacks based on opposition and terain. falling back to set up a deffencive paremitar and stuff (sorry, my grammar stink)
gotta love it :D

yeah OFP is good :>

i dont think the AIs in CoD2 were too... um... supersmart. better than #1 but i dunno. probably cause i played on easy >.>

edit:
kinda nice that they cant see threw smoke, i liked that part =D

It really depends on what you think is smart for AI. I've got some AI courses at school and the idea I've gotten now is that creating an AI like seen in CoD2 already takes a lot of time and really isn't as simple as it seems to some of you. I don't know if their smoke grenade useage was scripted or not, but they seem to take good cover and flanked me several times too in the more non-linear levels. While not as smart as real enemies, I think it's getting there.

But, and that's where I agree with you guys, it's not advancing quickly enough to keep up the pace with the graphics department. And that's where I think it gets to feel odd: realistic looking soldiers are expected to behave realistic, but their AI isn't as good as their looks which is somewhat disappointing.

@Strider: some levels allowed you to take on the objectives in a different order, which for me resulted in some frantic running around the area with attacks on multiple sides, where I could choose which way to go more than just two paths. Some levels also slowly unlock routes to previous area's which are then reused like in the Russian levels with the tank hunting. Only after playing it through the second time I noticed the area was strangely familiar... that's good level design I think.

The A.I. in fear isnt all that impressive, ive run up to guards numerous times to fly-kick them in the head (that bit i love) but they dont seem to notice me until im 2 inches from their face. It's all a trick, they tip of certain items for cover (scripted) and crawl under things to appear lifelike, theyre really not that smart - just tough bastards to kill. Cap'n P i gotta admit the American campaign is good and those levels where you have to control numerous buildings to win, but theyre like 4 or 5 levels out of a total what? 27 missions i think, it's got its bits but i still remain fairly dissapointed in it.

Oh yeah whats OFP?

COD was the best WW2 game ever....until COD2 came out :D
it seriously is good - the AI IS better - they cant see through smoke, they throw your grenades back, the look for ways to flank you, they set up mg-42's at the best place to shoot ememies, the tanks 'see' you and drive away when your trying to plant explosives on it
the levels are ok, there are a few really well-done design points - like when your crawling through a pipe you see certain areas of the battlefield through holes, and when your on the ground you look at the pipes and you think, 'i was up there lol'
and there are a few missions where you have to clean out villages of enemies and you can choose what order you want to do it in - for e.g. you can eliminate enemies in the post office before the german field HQ, or the other way round. also theres like choices - like you can blow up a building or just go in and clear it out, etc.
the russians rock - they keep going on about the 'motherland', their 'comrades' and the 'facist bastards' - hilarious

best........WW2.........game........ever!

BUY IT! the multiplayer is awsome!
oh and btw the guns and vehicles and stuff are like really close to real

the mg-42 a pre-pkaced by the game designers, the moving tanks are scripted to move back and forth - they dont really see you. The A.I. constantly stand up when theyre being shot at, im sick of my men dying for stupid reasons!

by the way, have anyone tried mapping for COD2?
ive tried for the first one, gave up after 2 minutes. lol. prolly aint that hard once you get into it though.
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-16 05:53:52 UTC Post #147345
the tanks or the mg-42's arent scripted, stal for ages and you see
also, i forgot the battle chatter system: if a friendly sees an enemies behind some crates, he yells out: 'enemy behind that crate' (example) and they do that for everything, but its not constant.
also they improved it so when a npc goes over a wall, his hand actually touches the wall, not the air above or the solid wall OF it.
and the only reason the npc's always get owned by nades is because otherwise it wouldnt be as fun - watch the commentary if you got the collectors edition and they talk about it
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 18 years ago2005-11-18 02:24:39 UTC Post #147738
that battle chatter system has been used (or something similiar) on many games, its not intelligent - its an illusion to intelligence - they CONSTANTLY yell out shit like 'enemy behind the low wall' when your surrounded by low walls and theyre right infront of you. I got the special edition and ive watched it - still not impressed. the mg42 ARE pre-placed by the level editors just as you would those ar2 type guns for hl2 its not the ai, theyre scripted to use them at particular points in the game. The worst part about it all is that i SOLD call of duty to buy the sequel!
