I'm looking for a good freeware DVD ripper/recompressor for Windows. I've got a score of EELS music videos to rip for so-far patient fans and I've so far failed to find any tools which will spew out anything watchable without my spending an hour ripping each one and fiddling a lot, which I don't have time for. I've had rippers which put the audio a couple of seconds out-of-sync, which bizzarely override the aspect ratio, etc. Any suggestions very welcome.

I need to spit them out as AVIs, preferably in XviD, I'm afraid, and that doesn't seem to be able to do that. These're gunna be downloaded a lot too.

I think that what you are trying to do is illegal! But if you still want to, download the vlc media player, use it as a stream server, and output the stream to a file, I think it can do avi, and you'll need dvd decrypter too.
videolan.org - vlc
dvddecrypter.com - dvd decrypter
And I almost forgot, you'll need daemon tools to mount the .iso from dvd decrypter: daemon-tools.cc

It does take a bit of work, but it should work. I've ripped parts of dvds to mpegs with it!

Hehe I thought this was a test for some banning thing when you talk of illegal things ;)

Hm Daemon or DVD shrink are good choices!

Nah, I'm pretty sure Rabid was just talking about people coming on and asking/talking all the time about warez. Everybody's bound to do something illegal sometime. C'mon, it's the Internet. They're not copyright DVDs or anything, though.

I thought Daemon was just for mounting images?

yes, it is. Here's what you do:
-use dvd decrypter to record the dvd as an .iso file
-use daemon tools to mount it as a drive
-open the .vob files (I think, they're the biggest ones, in the video_ts dir?) with vlc, set it up as a stream server with the output as your desktop and an avi or mpg file, and play it back.
The conversion from .vob to .avi can only happen in real time with vlc, but ripping the dvd to an iso on my old laptop only took about 30 mins.

Any Updates on this anyone?

I've tried these, but with no success:

DVDshrink-great for copying dvds, but not to avi
DVDDecrypter-fine for decryping--you can watch without the disk--but that's all
1clickDVDcopy-Only for 1:1 copies, limited license
DVDrip-and-burn-didn't work, and gave me 30 new critical objects on AdAware :o
x-DVD-Platinum-will convert DVD to any format--mp3, avi, whatever, but not free :(

I'm currently combing a couple dvd ripping forums, but no success yet.

The next program I'm planning to try is called AutoGordianKnight. If I get desperate enough, I might try Frag's method!

I'm trying to convert a couple dvds I already own to mp3, and to avi.

Don't use AutoGK, it's adware. Use the true Gordian Knot, as that is proper nice freeware.

I know your pain, comrade, as do the several people waiting for DVDs full of EELS goodness.

How ironic! :badass: Rabid says no talking on illegally stuff(I think this includes ripping) and seventh opens a thread on it. BAN SEVENTH!!! :sarcastic:

Hey, this isn't America. We'll do what we want with our own property.

That rule is just to stop idiots coming on and warez-spamming.

The rule is so that we can suspend people who come on asking for "omg where can I download hl2 omg!?" or "omg I have hax version of hl2 how do work it lol?!"

Seventh: Thanks for the heads-up on Gordian Knot :)

Elon: Check that diarrhea flowing from your keyboard again...

Besides, it's perfectly legal to backup media you already own afaik...

Yeah, but it's not funny, and actually a tad bit annoying. So what was the point again?

If you want to be super helpful, how about focus some of that energy on finding a nice, freeware dvd ripper for the rest of us :)

Then we will all kiss you! :P

@Seventh: There probably isn't one single tool out there that does it for you, even less that do it well.

I just tried DVDx 2.3 from SourceForge, but the quality and sync is horrible. I'll try changing settings and doing it again later...

While we're on the subject of video, does anyone know how to prevent or at least reduce lip-out-of-sync? (oposed to lip-sync :D)

It's my biggest problem when watching videos that I have borrowed off my Bittorrent buddies around the world :)
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-08 19:29:25 UTC Post #156949
Well, you could slow down light in a very dense (but pure, otherwise the image wouldn't be discernable) material. Either that or re-encode it. There're probably better ways, but I don't know of 'em, really... I'd imagine some players could compensate, or you could remove the audio and re-dub it, fiddle with the timing, trial and error.

After you decompress the vob files with any of the decrypters mentioned in this thread, one program you could use is DVD2AVI with a VFAPI plugin.
By using the plugin, you can create a dummy .avi file in a very short amount of time and open that in VirtualDub. With Virtualdub you can trim the video, change aspect ratio, choose the codec for the AVI etc.
I think that's the fastest way.

VFAPI plugin? I use DVD2AVI more than anything else myself, but I haven't been able to do much useful because of it breaking the AR and audio synchronisation.

You should save the audio as a separate procedure and add it with VirtualDub.
1)Decrypt vob files
2)open vob files with dvd2avi
3)save wav with dvd2avi
4)save avi with dvd2avi with the VFAPI plugin codec
5)open virtualdub, select the avi and the wav file for sound
6)apply any changes, chooses codecs and save.

It is important that you dont delete de vob files until everything is done, since VFAPI directs VirtualDub to these files, instead of a real avi.

DVDx 2.3 from SourceForge Update:

Great for extracting audio only--I like to listen to movies, rather than watch them.

After decryption, the whole process didn't take longer than 10 minutes total--to wav, and then used GoldWave to change it to mp3.

Oh movie was Total Recall btw, and let me tell you it's a great movie to listen to :)
Ha ha ha you think this is the real Quaid...It is--KE KE KE KE KE
